They have been talking about the Messina bridge forever. When my mom and her family came to the USA in 1954 , they were talking about it.

Watching the RAI and everyone in Genoa protesting about the Morandi Bridge collapse and wanting to rebuild it, I doubt they will ever build the bridge down south...

If I recall correctly at one time they actually had plans and formed some sort of department/agency to move forward with the bridge.

    When
When I lived in Italy around 2000-2005 , even though no one believed it would happen, the bridge was a done deal. When Berlusca left office, the plans were shelved....

If/when Italy’s economy collapses will they be more or less likely to go forward with the construction process seeing as it will put people to work and what not?

Construction in Italy is a joke. I did it on the administrative side for three years and I can assure you , no one cares about whether people are working or not.

The government said they do to a point but they never seem to do anything about it.

Not too long ago the unemployment rate for people under 30 was 52%. Italy never changes regardless of how terrible their economy is.

I think in Italy the family covers the inadequacies of the economy so people do not actually suffer the economic consequences of the economic mismanagement like they would elsewhere.

To a point I would agree. That is only if the parents and grandparents have or made enough money to help out to their kids until they are in their 40's and 50's. In that respect, kids go on and live at home and never marry without much of a worry. Thus , bringing on the "Mammoni Syndrome"...

What an absolute shame. The Romans built not one but two walls completely surrounding Alesia in like a week and 2000 years later almost 7 years and construction on a stadium hasn’t even begun.

It's easier when you have slaves and don't care how many people die

While the sentiment is true, the walls built during the Battle of Alesia were not built by slaves but rather Roman soldiers under Julius Caesar.

It was one of the most brilliant military tactics of all time. If you are a history buff it's worth reading about, it was unbelievable really

Yeah man. Not slaves but Roman Legions.

It’s cool that Spartans only profession was war but to me much cooler that Rome was able to conquer the Mediterranean world with legions that were also fantastic architects, masons, and scholars.

I don't think so because her successor would be bound by her actions. It is the office of mayor that acts, not the person.

Remember, the project has been approved, all we are awaiting is the modification to the urban plan which will enable the project to be officially accommodated so building permits etc. can be issued and mobilisation on site to begin.

Theoretically you are correct. In practice that's not the way it goes in Italy. More than likely the new mayor will find "issues" that will require further investigation.

In Italy its more about feeling important than it is actual payoffs (although that's a big part). The new mayor will want to flex his muscle and make JP come hat in hand for his approval. He'll want to feel important, that this project hinges on his blessing.

After that every bureaucrat that didn't have input the first time around will weigh in, having to give their blessing to proceed. This is why nothing gets done there.

Why? Because as @Il Ciuccio said, it's Italy.
