26 and 6 on free agency? Ok, that is a step for sure.

I wish they’d drop the age requirement. With kids entering the league at a younger and younger age , they could be entering, or getting close to a decade in the league before they hit 26...

Lowering the free agency age is overdue. Honestly college players shouldn't have to go through the superdraft, they should be allowed to go to their homegrown club or free agency.

I've been hoping the league would negotiate one more DP spot in exchange for solidarity payments. Or give a nice salary cap bump.

"I want to be very clear, MLS is a winner in the solidarity payment world, and I have no objections to it. But we need to be sure we're in a situation where we're not running afoul of getting sued. Our players union isn't supportive of it. I've got great faith in them and I think if we can all come together and find a way to accept the fact that this is a positive for the sport, we should be able to manage our way through it." - Garber

I really hope they don't get rid of the 3rd DP or negotiate getting rid of it. Leave it as is. Whoever wants to take advantage of it will, whoever doesn't...well their loss.

How about add years of service plus age to get there? Say, if your years plus your age total 30? A kid who started playing at 16 would be a free agent at 23, but a mid who started playing at 22 would be at 26.

If they're old enough to buy a beer they're old enough for free agency.

LAFC grabbed a 21 year old from Portugal, no need for him to go through the draft. Soccer being an international game makes the draft hurt parity.
    >NYC and Atlanta don't need to get players through the draft, they are willing to spend.
    >San Jose, Houston, etc. all have tighter budgets.
    >When the draft comes around NYC will grab the most quality player on the board and they don't need that player.
    >Other teams need that player to stay competitive, but now they have to trade TAM or another player to acquire a player to benefit their team.
    >Big clubs collect more TAM increasing their budget even further, smaller clubs had to concede TAM and now they have a smaller budget.

    >>If college players could immediately seek free agency lower spending clubs could get players they need without having to give away TAM, etc.

Anyone else think 10 Donovans posting style and topic seem very familiar for a "new" poster?

What does this even mean? What are you talking about?

How are college players who played for MLS development academies not being "allowed to go to their homegrown club" now?

He's not a new poster.........he's been posting in the USA threads for a while. He's just lost and accidentally wandered into MLS N&A.........
Well................there was that one time...............Peter Vermes claimed "interest" in Keegan Rosenberry...........and MLS sided with Vermes, and punished Rosenberry for going to summer school so he could graduate in December...........and he had to enter the MLS draft instead of signing a Home Grown deal with Philly...........

(I should have clarified). In the situation that they were with a development academy team that is not an MLS team.

If they were not able to get a homegrown contract, I believe college players should be allowed to enter the league through free agency.

He just has a very similar writing style and the exact same points as our old friend adam tash, and his join date was in August so I was wondering if we had a duplicate account...

Unless he has a teleportation device, it is probably safe to assume they aren’t the same poster..

My writing style comes from writing constantly in Outlook for work. I'm open to feedback, if my writing style is that important to you feel free to PM me about it.

(So the thread can stay on-topic).

Outside of 10-11 players, the MLS draft might as well be re-named the USL draft.

I'd be perfectly fine with some tweaks, especially now that there's more teams in each round. Maybe make it one round to allocate the "best talent", then anyone after that has some kind of limited free agency to choose which team they want to sign with (with a limit perhaps as to how many a team can sign in the first x amount of days/months).

And 26/6 years of experience seems like a pretty good compromise in terms of free agency, especially if they extend the agreement a few years and then look to do away with it or keep it 2 years experience with one team or something by 2025.

League as a whole is probably better with the TAM, though. It's not like half the league has a third player sitting on 5-6 million a year. There's basically one team in that situation right now. You could set the new TAM max at $2 million (or just abolish the max, you can have a TAM guy on as much TAM as you have), add a little flexibility for transfer fees, and you've hit everyone but Toronto. Meanwhile you've meaningfully added resources for like 20 teams.

True, league as a whole is better with more TAM but it is even better with 3 DPs instead of 2. The 3rd DP is there for anyone to take advantage of. Toronto FC did and look what they were able to do on the league and on an International level, which being honest, you need to invest if you want to be competitive against Liga MX teams or any other league that doesn't deal with salary cap. Some don't want all those 3 DPs, which is fine, but why limit the ones that do have it? I am not against more TAM, I am against trying to hold back the owners who take full advantage of the few resources MLS lets you use. You can add more TAM it doesn't mean everyone is going to use it just as not everyone uses the DPs.

Poor players, caught in a monopoly professional league that has a (well-deserved) reputation for presenting a fair to average product on the field at best, and no national soccer triangle to locate the talent that surely exists in America to play the beautiful game.

What young athlete is going to want to give up a possible career in baseball for one in soccer when there's only one game in town and it's not the best of breed like Major League Baseball's on the field action in its sport?

What does any of this have to do with the CBA? The CBA doesn't determine whether there's a triangle  or the pay in baseball vs soccer worldwide. And the issues that actually are at stake have a complicated relationship to the development of talent. Remember, it's the union that's against training compensation.

This has the potential to be an interesting thread so if you're just on the board to be a troll, maybe do it somewhere else.

Uh... well, MLS currently has over 20 teams that have 20-30 players each that have all chosen to play in MLS over other leagues (both in country and globally).

Your basic premise here is false.

And there aren't a lot of people who can choose if they want to be a professional ath-uh-leet in more than one sport. You do what you love and what you're good at. If being an artist is your thing, you do it for the love of your art, for the creative process, to make something unique that expresses yourself. You don't become an artist because Rembrandt once sold a painting for a ton of money.

If an MLS player can make a lot of money by being really good at playing soccer, great for him! But the fact that some players make a ton of money isn't the reason he laces up his boots every day.
