Disagree, I'd call at least three of his saves really strong, as well as a key challenge that cut space on Martinez and aided in him putting it wide. Yeah, a little shaky on that one cross, but I don't think DC gets three points without Hamid. Much improved over his last few appearances with the NT.

I'm sure he's good enough for a Scottish reserve side like Emo. So, yeah, he's Euro-ready.

It was odd that the saves weren't on the highlights. Do you remember when they were in the game... i think i still have it in my DVR.

Even with the saves, a goalkeeper can't make mistakes like that at a higher level. They will get punished with goals and be criticized heavily. Weren't these the kind of mistakes Hamid made when getting his chance in Denmark?

    Second half, I believe.

I didn't follow his Denmark time closely, so I don't know. Did he play enough to establish a trend of mistakes? Possibly. Although if he keeps playing like last night, I probably wouldn't rule him out of current NT consideration even with his weaknesses.

I'll take a look later. The MLS stats/boxscore page is about as good as it could be. His saves were at....

    12:52
    32:05
    38:17
    54:23
    81:34
    82:04

    https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2018-09-02-dc-united-vs-atlanta-united-fc/boxscore

I think he only played three matches in April, (the 12th, 22nd, and 26th), conceding 7 goals in 300 mins. I did a quick search in the thread and could only find one set of highlights. @Ceres mentioned that he was being criticized for the third goal but the highlights for that game had been taken down. I thought one of the goals he conceded was on a cross he came for and got nothing, but dont trust my memory.

Look at you answering questions. That has to have boosted your "Q's answered" to "Q's asked" ratio significantly! :)

what I don't get is the 1.5 year loan with the club? It's pretty sweet that he got to return to United, but 1.5 might be too much. 1 year sure. I hope though he intends to return to Denmark and show him what he's got.

1.5 years screams "we don't have any use for you" IMO.

Yeah. I'm quite surprised they didn't opt for a club in Denmark or another Scandinavian league.

They might have wanted to but Bill has a say too. 1.5 probably has more to do with the mls calendar. Don’t see DC agreeing to a loan where they have to send back midway through the season.

And to cover some more ground, the Eintracht keeper (who he would have been no.2 after/or replaced) moved to Bayer Leverkusen. Whereas Kevin Trapp (of PSG) moved to Eintracht.

why not 1 year then? I guess the lucky thing is Hamid signed for 4 years so until january 2022. So, still some way back for him. I had hoped 2-3 years in Denmark and then a move to a France or Germany. But, now the waiting game.

They have had other players out on loan longer than that .... and if you go look at their transfer pattern, they have send 12 other players out on loan besides Hamid in this summer transfer window ... one of them (Sammy Skytte) they payed around $580k for but send him on loan straight away ... they also send 13 players out on loan last season, so this is not really that unusual for them to do ..

Sure. The point is, will Siddharta Gautama Buddha Skytte ever play for them?

They are the moneyball team of Europe, so they are in the business of picking up good players cheaply and then selling them or sending them on loan for later use ... their most interesting summer signing is the 20-yo Brazilian Evander, who they got on loan from Vasco da Gama with an option to buy at a fixed price ... I got the feeling that they are going to make a lot of $$ buying and selling him...

Finally got around to watching Hamid's saves.

12:52 - holds onto ball hit low and right at him from a poor angle from his left
32:05 - tipped ball over cross bar from ball hit from about 20 yards
38:17 - gives up bad rebound on shot hit from roughly 12 yards out*
54:23 - nice reaction save but rebound goes straight back out*
81:34 - very nice save to his right from free kick about 25 yards out
82:04 - takes two steps forward on corner and is still moving backward when ball is headed into ground slightly to his left. Makes reaction save pushing ball wide.

    * Canouse was able to deflect follow up shot for a corner and Birnbaum for a throw in

He is poorly positioned to far to the near post and isnt set until the ball is at least halfway to the goal from where Larentowiz heads it. I think it is savable if positioned appropriately and set in time.

    So by my count...

    1 very good save
    2 good reaction saves
    3 relatively basic plays

    2 bad rebounds
    2 crosses misread
1 goal from a corner kick where he was poorly positioned.

That isnt a good game to me. He has a lot of holes in his game and none of these "mistakes" are new. These have always been issues with his game. He got away with it that night but will cost a team games, especially at a higher level.

Not a good look for the league on many fronts. I doubt FC Midtjylland are thinking if only we hadnt loaned Hamid back to MLS.

They probably content with his wages. I gotta figure he was earning a lot since he was figured to be the #1 and years of experience.

team of the week decisions - especially mlssoccer.com's - are often overly "box-score-based (too dependent on stats)...

but, at the same time, perhaps you are underestimating the importance of "big saves" and exceptional shot stopping.

as a USMNT fan, I'd much prefer a GK who can stop shots and make the highlight reel saves but struggles with the finer points of GK play - distribution, misreading crosses etc - over one who plays the position well in all the little things but never makes the big saves or stops the big shots.

now, obviously, if there was a keeper who excelled in all areas of GK play...that would be ideal.....and i hope Hamid can iron out the areas of his game where he struggles.

all that said, my number one skill i'm looking for in a GK is Hamid's best trait....making saves. i think he is exceptional at that part of being a GK and I'd prefer him over someone like Guzan who is not.

run of the mill, imo....especially poor on PKs from what i've seen and mediocre distribution.

damn. I'd have hoped he'd regain some form since he's facing lesser productive attacking play.

The issues with his game aren't "finer points", they are basic fundamentals. I appreciate big saves and think you are underestimating how demoralizing it can be for a team to lose games/points due to goalkeeping errors.

I dont think I'm an outlier in wanting a goalkeeper to be as mistake free as possible. Howard lost his spot at Man United to a very average goalkeeper for giving up a rebound. Hamid's issues with his game and soft goals he conceded are most likely why he is back at DC United.

It is unfortunate as he hasnt fixed the issues before in MLS and probably isnt going to now... especially when people rave about a performance like that. I think he would have been better off staying in Denmark and working on these issues rather than rushing back to get games.

The US has a much better goalkeeper in Steffen and others that are decent shot stoppers, but fundamentally sound. Horvath is much better bet as he is in an environment that is giving him instant feedback that his play isnt good enough and is likely working very hard on cleaning up those parts of his game.

If you want to see home at the international level, you are going to have to get used to this...
