keep guys like kim minjae, cho hyunwoo, etc in the squad but replace the forwards with u23 scrubs like lee keunho, han seungkyu, etc team doesnt even make the semifinals
Well, our wingbacks started the game like wing forwards and Malaysia just countered through the wings. Then there were two absolutely shite goals given from a GK mistake and horrible defending. It's what led us to switch to a 4231 for the rest of the tournament. Blessing in disguise. Imagine we beat Malaysia, continued the 352 against Kyrgyzstan, and used it in the KO stage. Would've been destroyed on the counter.
Didn't the 2014 cohort play together longer pre-Asiad? Lee Gwang Jong lead KNT U-20s to U-23 with similar batch of players that comprised the AG 2014 squad maybe. I felt KHB's team was more haphazard. Also, we have to consider things like relative strength of opponents in 2014 and this year's tournament. I remember Lee Gwang Jong's KNT U-23 having to face Hong Kong, Thailand, etc. KHB's team faced Iran, Uzbekistan -- latter being favorites. Last but not least, we played at home in Incheon. And had LJS. and JHS
I went back to my match notes on Kim JM after seeing this post. 1. Malaysia match - deployed as a CAM in a 3-1-4-2 in the first half. Worst tactics ever. KJM clearly played out of position. Kim MJ constantly pumped the ball long bypassing the shambolic midfield. Second half tactics change brought Kim JM into his natural position. Just as his passes began to flow and bring color back to our game, Kim HB makes the mistake of substituting him. 2. Vietnam match -Good match from him. Midfield was under good control with his ball distribution until the second substitution when our shape and tactics changed. Then we looked clueless as Kim MJ was pushed into the midfield where Kim JM had been. We looked lost afterwards. 3. Japan match - one glaring defensive mistake almost led to a conceded goal. Otherwise controlled the midfield amd sprayed passes all over a potato patch ptich. Made an incredible through ball to HEJ that was called offisde. Should have played with LSW in the midfield together to completely control the vertical space but KHB was too timid to leave him in and take Lee JH who had a pass miss every other attempted pass unlike KJM. Overall, great performances when played in his natural position. Poor when not. Substituted too soon in all three matches. Three defensive lapses with one being critical. Still not bad defnsively when compare to the likes of Lee SM.
The way I saw it, KHB wanted to build his midfield around Hwang IB with two physical midfielders behind him in an ill-conceived version of the 3 back system. That is why he took someone as unprepared as Lee SM to this tournament instead of BSH or Han CH or Hwang KW. If he had instead built this side around LSW and KJM in the midfield, we would have seen both players shine and control the midfield where sides parked the bus against us imo. I simply don’t buy the narrative that Kim JM was too young for this tournament. I view it as KJM having to fit himself as a round peg in Kim HB’s square hole.
I think age also played a row because players need some time to adjust when they "step up". I remembered just before the u17 wc with LSW, people weren't really rating KJM in the first friendly but once he adjust, he got better and we all saw his talent. He was the youngest player in that WC as well. Trust me, when I saw KJM play with his age group, he was one head above everybody else. It's also true for LKI and his debut for Valencia. He performed better in his last friendly. I'm actually not surprised KJM played his best game at the end. That's why I'm keep saying we need to give younger guys more chances. The more exposure, the better they get.
I've also watched all games, but as I said, I think his nervousness coming from his young age was clearly visible, no matter if he played on his good position or not. Even when he was used as a CDM and had some amazing passes, he was often too hasty and played as if he had a lot of pressure. I personally think it was not a wrong decision to sub him off early as it would have been a catastrophy if he made a mistake that lead to a goal. The aftermath would've been too much for such a young boy (if they lost a game because of his mistake). Difficult to say afterwards, but that could've happened with his playing style. And I disagree about the Vietnam match. Good passing game for sure, but defensively he was way too passive and he's got less work rate than LJH which I think was the reason he was subbed out. When LSW came in, we needed balance and KJM was just not defensively mature yet to build a CM line next to HIB (if it wss JYH, woulda been a different story). What I don't understand is that LSM (who's just one year older and ism't better defensively) was always picked ahead of him. However, I think he will play an essential part in the Olympic games (maybe for the sake of HCH or PSH). He's fcking 18 and already played a U23 tournament and plays in Europe with good chances to get promoted soon. His future is bright.
Point is that KSY had pro league experience already. KJM will have that soon and with Bento it might not take long until we see KJM in the senior NT dress.
From today's point of view, no. He should focus on Liefering and getting promoted. I personally want HCH to play in the Asian Cup. He's at his best form atm. A good Asian Cup might give KHB pressure to call him up to the Olympics.
Kim Jung-min should get in some minutes during friendlies. then selected again after the Asian Cup. Baek Seung-ho and Lee Kang-in should get called up for the Asian Cup instead.
I'm anxiously keeping my fingers crossed he calls up those 2. I hope he's not another manager who will repeatedly call up the Jang hyung soos of the world instead.
Of my understanding is that Bento will start cleaning house once he gets a gist of the team and players during the upcoming friendlies.
Not with Ki gone after the AC, and we need to bring up and test new faces to get some sort of replacement for him. At least with Choi Young-joon, Lee Chang-min, Kim Jung-min, Hwang In-beom, Baek Seung-ho, Lee Kang-in etc. we can figure out a solution for our next backbone before that happens, plus we need to be flushing out Jung Woo-young and Jang Hyun-soo as well.
I've only watched SBS. It was the best commentary combination I've seen from Korean tv. Bae Sung Jae is the best Korean caster ever, Jang Ji Hyun is one if the most competent expert and Choi Yong Soo was just comedy (in a good way).
He was never intended on leaving, nor was he hired for the Asian Games only. Kim Hak-bum's contract is till the 2020 Tokyo Olympics since the day he was appointed.
To add on your post, Kim Pan Gon said that they would've certainly reconsidered him if he didn't get gold, but since he did, they want to trust him. They will however give him a detailed feedback about the performance, to make him rethink about his mistakes.
