Mebbe the so-called progressive Moon government will review the military service rules and update them given the previous ones were introduced when the only truly international star was Cha Bum Kun.
Problem is, cant just revamp the law to accommodate soccer players. Academics and other productive members of society at the top of their fields would also want to be exempted. It's a difficult problem without a straightforward solution.
I feel like it would be okay to snub academics. Nobody is at the top of their field when they are 20. If not have some sort of program to allow them to study and do training kind of like US's ROTC program. New laws would make it unfair for other athletes who do not play team sports too. (swimming or track/field events)
academics have a lifetime to achieve their goals most athletes have less than a decade. i dont know how the accurate the number is but supposedly 0.2 percent of pro athletes in korea receive exemption for exemplary reasons. i dont think too many will raise problems with last nights football team collecting a get out of army ticket. kfa compiled a team whose a sole intention was to acquire an exemption but they still earned their victories. its dominant sports like baseball thats been noted to take advantage use of the regulation. they knew they were going to win because everyone else is sending amateurs so what do they do they make room in the squad for army dodgers. there were fans, genuine devoted ones not fake casual ones, hoping the team would lose. in fact id say they were even the majority
Physics and Math are different. most geniuses peak in the 30s much like professional athletes. the 20s are basically the formative years of a genius. They should stay in school. This is where the argument for academic exemption arises. This is why I think they should have some reserve program for these individuals.
I had not been aware of that about the baseball team altho I did see one really well established pro player on the roster and was rather puzzled.
Unfortunately I don't think the government will change anything. For the sake of Korean football for the next 10 years, the best scenario is to win a medal at the Olympic games. However, it needs a miracle to do that, even if we got a good team...
https://namu.wiki/w/전문연구요원 stem students in this country can complete conscription without attending the army. all they have to do is complete masters studies or above then be a working employee in the industry for 3 years. doesnt get any easier. if the government wants to establish exemplary conditions for complete exemptions im all for it
For whatever reason, many Korean netizens are asking for exemption to be removed from the AGs. I think it has something to do with the baseball team.
Turns out LSW was a NK spy who successfully accomplished his objective of reducing ROK Armed Forces of 20 men. /s
It's true that most academics do their best work early in their careers, although I wonder about the incentive of tenure.
Yeah, the comments on stories about baseball gold were very informative. Also found out baseball supporters definitely are not 국뽕s.
Can someone explain this? Why do people view baseball players earning exemption different from football? EDIT: What about other sports like men's basketball, men's volleyball, etc?
Very weak competition hence guaranteed gold, as only 2-3 countries give a hoot about baseball. They didn't have to put in any bit of effort to win Gold versus the showing we had in football.
I just read up on it so I may not be the best source but it seems pro baseball players have been using the AG as a military exemption machine because the other strong teams in Asia like Japan and Taiwan don't take the Asiad that seriously and mostly send amateurs. On the other hand, quite a few pro athletes from Korea had been added to the roster knowing that it would be a fairly easy gold and hence, get exemption. Comments derided the team for their underwhelming wins against mostly scrub players.
So I guess people (baseball fans?) view the competitiveness of AG Baseball as lesser than that of men's football?
They see it as an military exemption mill for a bunch of untalented youngsters. That's opposite of Son and the goseng we all saw him and team go through.
I can actually imagine HHC and LSW with those faces putting on a uniform. Sorry, but this makes me chuckle way too much.
Could you guys imagine what a fcking catastrophe it would have been if we lost? I don't think we would ever have lived it down. The practical damage it would have caused is obvious: it would have changed the careers of everyone on that team for the worse. JHW, our best keeper since LWJ and probably the 2nd/3rd best player on the NT, loses his only chance at exemption. SHM is fcked. The vast majority of the team never makes another AG or Olympic team. LSW has his career severely hampered, for instance losing the chance to go to a certain team because of questions surrounding military service, etc. The psychological damage would have been pretty bad too. The Japanese would have absolutely loved it if they could have beaten a team with SHM (and maybe LSW as well) to win the gold and fck with their chances at military exemption. Their fans would have been insufferable had they managed it. They would have grilled us for it for decades, gloating about who their "U-21, no wild card" team beat a team with SHM and sent them to the military. Korean fans (including us) would have been crushed. This was an extremely high stakes game for this team. With all of this on the line, they stepped up and scored two goals in extra time. That was impressive stuff. Also, we deserved to scored early on but got fcked over by some comically bad officiating. Refs missed an easy penalty and a took away a breakaway opportunity with a retarded offside call. Fck that chump with the bad offside call in particular. Thank God we won.
This guy reminds me of KSY in the way LJS reminds me of LCY. I didn't understand why KHB subbed him out instead of LJH.
Lol I don't get the analogy. In regards to Kim Jungmin, he's the youngest player in the squad (2 years difference with second youngest) and he had a huge responsibility. For a player that had zero U-23 experience and just started playing professionally, he did pretty well. I know he'll get better as he'll get older.
Yeah, this kid is supremely talented, young, and already in Europe. Now he has exemption as well. Bright future, hope he doesn’t mess it up.
