His Portugal side were defensively well-organized. Thought he made decent tactical switches in-game, such as against USA in WC14 and Germany in Euro 2012 (although they lost). An obvious reliance on Ronaldo for attacking play. Pretty much what you'd expect from Portugal (solid defenders and CMs and Ronaldo up front). Maybe that's not anything special, but he played to the strengths of their team, which is something our past coaches have failed to do. A highlight is that I think he got the better of Spain in Euro 2012, given their resources.
The fact is that Bento is mainly seen as a mediocre manager, but fans still prefer him over CQ considering many Portuguese fans hate CQ, not just about his management style but as well as the failures he's had with Portugal. The best they've ever had was Luiz Felipe Scolari, whilst domestic names like Coelho and Fernando Santos is rated higher than Bento in terms of overall management style. Bento's four year stint with Portugual was neither bad nor exceptionally well, it was rather ok minding a room for more improvements. Tactically, I prefer AVB over Bento, but if you look at their entire management style side by side, they're not that far off from each other. only except AVB is more pragmatic than Bento is. Would've liked AVB if not for Quique, but then again, the lack of interest in managing our national team, especially for four years, whilst the likelihood of demanding a higher salary are the two main factors of a rejection.
The point is that Bento never really failed at China like a lot of folks tend to see it as, especially when they're comparing how Stielike's Tianjin was placed higher than Bento's Chongqing on the table that it somehow means that Bento is shit or Stielike>Bento, which is not true. Again, Bento never got the chance to build and improve the team even when he kept them at a stable position from being relegated(Which was his objective). Beating Stielike in the CSL may not seem much of an accomplishment to you, but to every damn manager, a win and 3 points is very much obliged even in garbage leagues since it's all about remaining on the table and avoiding relegation.
Same thing happen to him in Brazil and Greece. Had a year with both clubs and then sacked. So what are your excuses now?
What's there to excuse about? his sacking in China wasn't justified, even with Olympiakos, he had them sitting at the top of table whilst securing the league title, but was eventually sacked with a game left due to the criticisms he made publicly regarding the team, not because of the three games losing streak. Olympiakos eventually won the title without him. His stint at Cuzeiro wasn't great, so he resigned due to multiple winless games, fair enough to say the least.
If he was successful for both Olympiakos and Cuzeiro, he wouldn't be here. Let's be real we won't get a successful manager like Nagelsmann.
No point other than his detest for the CSL, J-League, ME, let alone condemning our players from going there. Oh, and his obsession over Nagelsmann.
So what is wrong with that? These are blackholes any sane players want to avoid. What is wrong with looking after your players??
Bento's first call ups for September's friendlies against Costa Rica and Chile. GK : Kim Seunggyu, Kim Jinhyeon, Jo Hyeonwoo DF : Kim Youngwon, Kim Minjae, Jeong Seunghyeon, Yun Youngseon, Yun Sukyoung, Hong Cheol, Lee Yong, Kim Munhwan MF : Jang Hyeonsu, Ki Sungyueng, Jeong Wooyoung, Ju Sejong, Nam Taehee, Hwang Inbeom, Lee Jaeseong FW : Lee Seungwoo, Son Heungmin, Mun Seonmin, Hwang Heechan, Ji Dongwon, Hwang Uijo
I mean it's not much different from STY's but I can't blame him considering it's his first week and he won't know too much about this team.
i thought shin taeyong weeded out a lot of incompetent players from senileike days but here they are right back in the squad the moment hes gone. bento is going to take forever to realize he cant fix players like nam taehee who arent hungry enough. someone like cha duri needed to remain in the coaching staff for smoother transition
Someone should tell Bento that he should not pick players that are playing in ME if he wants to be successful.
I wonder if not calling up Suk was one of the terms of the job offer. I also had a feeling he would call up the Messi of the Middle East. He probably saw his highlights thinking he'll emulate that kind of play for the NT. He'll be very disappointed.
Dont get disappointed too quickly yet. Bento picked these players based on the WC squad + what KFA suggested + what he saw himself during K-league matches.
He watched Seoul vs Pohang and Jeonbuk vs Sangju, but he didn't pick anyone who played those games. 3 players who were picked from the teams he watched are Yun Seokyoung(Seoul), Hong Cheol(Sangju), and Lee Yong(Jeonbuk), but none of them played in the games he watched.
HC and LY played in WC.. YSY prob recommended by KFA or Bento could've watched previous matches on TV. Who knows?
