A thread for the WNT, Canadians in the NWSL and other countries, and even Canadians in Canada. 2018 has the CONCACAF championship, the qualifying tournament for the 2019 Women's World Cup in France. WNT's most recent game was in Hamilton: In the 2018 Algarve Cup, Canada lost to Sweden but beat Japan for 5th place. Previous Canada WNT threads with @lil_one, @mpr2477 and @bythesea 2017 - 2014 - 2013 - 2012 - 2011 - 2010 - 2009 - 2002-05 (Sorry there's no maple leaf html character, this was the closest they had ✸)
Does anyone have any info on what college Jordyn Huitema is considering? (I’m hoping Duke since her brother starred there)
another possibility is that she might turn pro; she guessed played over this summer for PSG, starting 2 of 3 games. IF she got payed for those game, then she would be in violation of the NCAA rules, thus pretty much ensuring she's probably going to sing up with them
I saw discussion on Twitter (informed sources, that is) saying that the high schoolers playing with PSG were not, in any way, putting their NCAA eligibility in jeopardy. I personally don't know NCAA rules, but either they didn't get paid, or what high schoolers do before getting to college simply doesn't affect eligibility.
in the one expo game in Portland, PSG invited local kids from a youth select club(I think 4 of them actually got some playing time/unlimited subbing was allowed ). but Huitema was a bonafide starter who also traveled & played in the two games in Miami. NCAA rules allow this & plus expense money, but NOT a salary. she still got an year of high school left & doubt full if she got paid anything by PSG. I still remember the legendary Sabonis son playing 2 years basketball for Real Madrid before bring allowed to come & play at Gonzaga, all in the confines of NCAA rules(as I guess he didn;t get paid anything by RM)
On Sunday in Ottawa: Also a full game vid, if it's available (Portuguese commentary) https://www.olimpiadatododia.com.br/futebol/89755-ao-vivo-brasil-x-canada-amistoso/ Match report - https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/canada-brazil-women-soccer-recap-1.4808360
here's the full Canada/Brazil game. Though they're missing Marta, Brazil comes with an actual stronger lineup than they had at ToN, especially on defense with the likes of Fabiana, Rafealle, Benitez & 1st tier GK, Barabara, along with the mid, Alves all returning. Canada on the other hand plays it seems the same consistent lineup. It hasn't been that good of an year for them in the NWSL/Europe as Sinclair lost her leading scorer role with the Thorns. Beckie & Prince aren't even starters at the lower tier clubs, Sky Blue & Dash. Even Buchanen lost her starting spot over at Lyon. They've definitely need some fresh meat if they want to compete next year at the WC(Sinc, Matherson & Scott are way past 30)
In the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Championship, Canada's group opponents are Jamaica (Friday), Cuba (Mon 8th) and Costa Rica (Thurs 11th). Oh Canada!!! 12-0 beatdown of Cuba tonight. Adriana Leon and 17 yr old Jordyn Huitema each with 4 goals apiece! Wow

After this brace vs Jamaica, Nichelle Prince scored again yesterday vs Costa Rica, so I have to ask: why she was basically never a starter in NWSL this season with Houston Dash?
I think Nichelle is the type of player that plays better for her national team, and has good chemistry with her national teammates, as opposed to the Houston Dash. Beckie is the same way. She sometimes starts for her NWSL club, but then gets burried deep on the bench for weeks and weeks. Not sure why, as I think Beckie is a stud player with tricks/moves for days, but that happens sometimes.

After being nominated for France Football's Ballon d'or, Christine Sinclair scored her 175th international goal, 9 away from Abby Wambach's record of 184. She's also quite good at social media-ing: - https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/canada-women-soccer-christine-sinclair-1.4848040 (Archived) Hey @CanadaSoccerEN when do the women start their World Cup qualification tournament? https://t.co/FzNaWyiCu3— Christine Sinclair (@sincy12) October 2, 2018 Yup, she social media'd them into promoting the women's tournament. Or at least, mentioning it more. The CONCACAF Championship so far hasn't been on any Canadian TV network, only streaming on the tournament website, although Sportsnet ran several stories about it. It would only really be big news if Canada lost to a lower-ranked team, but the fact that TV hasn't even tried yet.. (It isn't very clear who has the contract to show it - TSN or Sportsnet.)
Oh gee, another ********in shitty result by the Canadian Women vs the US! So typical. Try attacking for once instead of pullling it back just to keep possession for no reason. Dumb
all thing considering(what do you expect?); the US for the 2nd time in a row gets the home side(the US flopped last time the tourney was played outside their country, which was 2010 Mexico) the stacked US team had 7 players that made the NWSL 1st all star team vs none for the Canadian side(Sinclair only made 2nd all stars) and/in fact; several of the ten CA NWSL players have had a hard time getting starting spots on their respective clubs looking at Beckie(who seems to be doing well as an NT attacker) didn't score a single goal for her Sky Blue team this season & has only played a whole 16 minutes so far for her new, Man City club one must wonder if the much faster, Rose, would be a better fit to play at the wing, but her playing time has been suffering since the advent of the more Euro/technocrat coach. Moeller. & the biggest question of all; when will Huitema replace Sinclair as main striker? Problem is Huitema is still an high schooler, playing for the Whitecap's academy youth squad., which btw........contains about half of CA's youth NT but got severely criticized by the press since there's no real competition for them vs the rest of the North America's mom & pop select clubs. plus, while the defense is among the best, the midfield does need a makeover Matherson, Scott & Schmidt are either ailing or just getting old! This is why I think they brought up the capable Lawrence from her previous FB spot, but Quinn & Grosso are still a piece of work. I see Canada primed more for success for the Olympics, two years from now rather than next year's WC
There problem wasn't being slow or old, the Canadians problem was not attacking like they have in the previous meetings with the US. I don't know if that was a tactical decision by the coaching staff to try and slow the game down, and not get beaten on counter attacks. But it was dumb. There were several chances that Fleming, Beckie, etc, could have driven through the middle and the defense, or passed it quickly out wide to the flank players (Lawrence, Leon) and made an attack on goal. Instead, they pulled it back, passing back to the DM (Flemming or Schmidt) and then all the way back to the CBs. HELLO?? You're down 1-0. WTF are you trying to do....it didn't make any sense, and I am still pissed this morning thinking about it.
But on the other hand, lots of people were saying this was a meaningless game. They're implementing a different playing style than they've had in the past. Why not use the game to practice it against the #1 ranked team in the world? Of course, at some point, they've got to attack more as you suggest. But maybe they're not to that stage of their development yet.
