Lynden Gooch, playing as a striker, scored in the 96th minute to give Sunderland a 2-1 home win over Charlton.
In England... Lynden Gooch went the distance and scored a stoppage time winner for Sunderland in their League 1 debut. Looks like he played centrally. I'm kind of torn on this sentiment. In terms of sheer number of guys in Europe, it certainly seems like it could be a banner year, but in terms of guys likely to get substantial minutes in big leagues (i.e., guys to get most excited about and whom I can easily watch), there might not be so many. By my reckoning, we'd have Pulisic, McKennie, Brooks, and Chandler as likely starters or rotational starters in the Bundesliga. Not sure about Morales, and maybe Johnson and Wood get decent minutes off the bench, but that looks to be about it for guys actually playing. Maybe Sargent, Richards, or some other younger guy (Taitague?) makes a push for more time later in the season. In the EPL, I'd say only Yedlin and Ream are likely to see substantial minutes as of now. Williams seems to still be having issues with the injury from the end of last season. And then you have a handful of young guys who might make break into their respective sides (CCV, De la Torre, Fossey, Hyndman), but I wouldn't bet heavily on any those guys getting big minutes.
Looks like there could be one less yank abroad............ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...he-return-this-summer/?utm_term=.ad531abb2a89

Here's the Lynden Gooch goal: 1025736820053684224 is not a valid tweet id Lynden's comments after the game. Also, he's been working on this Irish-English-Californian accent for a while 'I just felt the noise and how much it meant to everyone...'@lyndengooch46 talks us through his late, late winner against @CAFCofficial. For me, much of the excitement is with the 'fringe' pups like Weah (who won't get a ton of minutes but I'll focus on the ones he does get), Robinson (who will get major minutes in the championship league), Sargent (worse off than Weah possibly for minutes), CCV, etc. Those are the kids the US really needs in 2-3 years. Watching them grow and improve will be fun this coming season.
Three midfield names abroad that aren't MNT quality yet but can be focused on for U23/Olympic purposes: '97 Kyle Scott of Telstar (on loan from Chelsea), '98 Kevin Lankford of Heidenheim, and '99 Juan Pablo Torres of Lokeren. Scott made his cup debut for Chelsea last year, which isn't nothing. And he has been doing well in preseason for Telstar, having scored three goals so far. Lankford will hopefully be getting starts here and there in the 2. Bundesliga, and Torres hopefully will be getting minutes in Belgium. When you factor in the strong possibility of the likes of Pulisic, McKennie, Adams, etc. not being released for qualifying, then you have to think of names like Scott being in the mix. The domestic pool of midfielders from '97-'00 is rather weak until you get to the young '00s of the cycle like Durkin and Mendez. So there's a good chance that one or more of the likes of Scott and Lankford who are playing abroad will be involved with the Olympic team.
Boom! Patrick Herrmann taps in, but it was @FabianJohnson23 who did all the hard work down the left 👏 (22') #DieFohlen 1-0— Gladbach (@borussia_en) August 4, 2018 Gets the assist, and nearly scored two goals as well. He wouldn't necessarily be an automatic choice for a national team recall for me, but I'd certainly call him up over certain other veteran names. He's a versatile player who's back in Gladbach's XI and will likely be starting in the Bundesliga. Also, he was not part of the T&T match.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6rf7cz Josh Gatt gets the equalizing assist against Rapid Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga.
I think Weah gets more minutes than some of you think. Playing in UCL means PSG is playing a lot of matches. He should get some solid time this season.
Always a FabJo fan and he should be one of the veterans involved going forward if that's what he wants. No begging him and he plays where the coach wants him to and where he fits best with this squad if he does play.
Some people are calling for Ream to be back with the national team, which I'm not necessarily against, but Ream is older and plays at a deeper position, so just between them, Johnson is more deserving of a callup. If we're discussing left backs, I would certainly call up Johnson before Villafana. I'd personally recall Chandler, too. I get he's had some NT inconsistencies in the past, but he's shown himself to be a good Bundesliga player and is worth another shot, and like Johnson, he was not part of the T&T match.
