I didn't catch this article when it came out back in March, but they released a new one praising his work ethic since the comment. Links to both articles:

    http://www.espn.com/soccer/hertha-b...onathan-klinsmannsays-hertha-berlin-assistant

This basically talks about him being too lazy, and not bringing work to the field every day. The full quote is
""He's got the basic skills, and taken a good athletic development," Petry said. "But he does not bring his skills to the pitch every day. All of the coaching staff misses that.""

""The past two, three months did not go as we hoped. The serious, focused German working is not fully in him, there's too much American left in him.""

Then this is the newer article: http://www.espn.com/soccer/hertha-b...acted-well-to-being-called-too-american-coach

Basically just praising him to reacting well to the comments and working hard, and how he is fighting for third choice with a recent signing.

My question though applies to the American player in general, do you think was just a one-off statement, or d you feel this is a really prevalent attitude that persists in a lot of Europe where American's are getting fewer chances. In addition do you feel there is any validity to the quotes?

I honestly thought when that article came out that the coach wasn't calling out American soccer players in Europe as much as the American stereotype which to some means entitled, lazy, etc.

I imagine if American players were, as a rule, seen as entitled/lazy by Europeans, they wouldn't be gobbling up our prospects like me at a buffet...

As an Expanding-American*, not all of the stereotypes are wrong... ;)

*Not my invention, don't give me credit for that one.

Actually, most comments you hear from Euro coaching staffs is the exact opposite. The star Euro 18 year old already has an Aston Martin, and hasn't had to work for anything in years. [There was actually a club in England that didn't arrange transportation to away games for their young players. They wanted them to figure it out on their own. To actually encounter some challenges in life.]

American youth soccer players, with very few exceptions (the Adu types), haven't been coddled since they were pre-teens. They haven't had Arsenal on their shirt since the age of 12, and thought they'd "made it" by the age of 16. They work hard and they're hungry. American kids usually fail due to a lack of technical ability, not a lack of heart or work ethic.

I was thinking more of an overall attitude towards players that aren't youth prospects, for example if it were today and Dempsey was in his prime would that type of attitude count against him when looking at certain leagues. But I can see the point of youth prospects.

Are we thinking of the same player? Clint has an entirely unearned reputation among some American fans as being "lazy", when in fact he consistently covers more distance than most of his teammates. His lack of speed simply creates an incorrect assumption that he does not run hard or run for very long.

His background as a poor kid from Nacodoches, TX, who fought his way from college to MLS to Fulham (a working class club where he was beloved), does not to me indicate someone who is particularly "entitled" or "soft" in the way that the German coach seems to suggest.

I don't think many European kids are being driven 4 hours each way to play for their youth team, and the ones that are clearly care about soccer as much as I assume Dempsey does...

Maybe the problems is that young Klinsmann is a prick. Can't remember what made me think that in the first place....

The dumb tweet was from a 14 year old. Cut him a break. Luckily the rest of us aren't typically judged as adults by the decisions we made as kids.

I thought that the original statement might've been just a motivational technique to put some fire under a young player.

I should clarify that I don't think Dempsey is lazy, I was just using his background as someone who didn't bolt overseas at 16. It was only an example, I could have went with McBride as well.

Like is there a sentiment that they have to work out the "american" in young players but they have time to do that so they can buy a 16 year old. But someone 24 or 25 is too set in, so the 25 year old American player has less opportunity than a 25 year old Spanish player while both are equally talented (just as an example).

I think you're waaaaay overthinking it.

Americans take up international roster spots. MLS doesn't do a very good job developing Americans past their teens. And for the most part, they're paying equal or better than the smaller European leagues. Add in the family aspect as players start to settle down and have children and families of their own, moving to Europe becomes less-and-less attractive. You might get a Geoff Cameron going the EPL at 27, but it's unlikely that Americans that are in MLS in their early-mid 20's ever make it over the pond to Europe.

Nothing to do with the attitudes of Americans in general. It's simply a confluence of factors that result in Americans being more attractive to European clubs early in their careers, and less-so later.

No, it doesn't. Shitty raps don't mean anything. But living in a trailer park in the middle of nowhere does.
