77' 1-1 2H hydration break. 84' 2-1 NC long cross from 10m wide right to 7m 1/3 right, Jenkins swings right roundhouse across her body as her defender overpursues, pulls a volley across mouth into back left. 1022633414556573696 is not a valid tweet id I love this far camera angle. [NC-Lyon] 10' 1-0 Renard backpass(?) or Speck through-ball down box left. Buchanan is the only Lyon player in own box, inexplicably doesn't go with ball, stands and watches. L.Williams sprints past her, O'Reilly starts her own cut from 25m center right up centerline. Williams catches up at 4m box left, ground cross back to 7m center. O'Reilly shoots one-touch left foot into Weiß's kick-save try, ball trickles in through 1/3 right. That's O'Reilly's 1st goal with North Carolina GOAL! @TheNCCourage take the lead! 27' 1-0 Kawamura steps up to disrupt a pass, plants awkwardly to change direction sharply rightward, left knee buckles She goes down on left side and stays down. 28' 1-0 Stoppage, trainers, Kawamura has still not even rolled over onto back. Kumagai rubs her back. L.Williams comes over and rubs her arm. 29' 1-0 Kawamura finally rolls ... onto the stretcher. What bad luck, she just came back from that. 31' 1-0 Kawamura is stretchered off, holding the towel over her face. Kumagai comes over for another pat. 31' 1-0 North Carolina subs in (1 of 3?) #16 Cari Roccaro for #20 Yuri Kawamura.
36' 1-0 van de Sanden blows past Hinkle(?) down wide right, veers inward to 4m mid-right. Backpass to 11m 2/5 right for Christiansen trailing totally unmarked, her one-touch right instep shot shanks/muffs wide left low. 38' 1-0 Brief cutaway to NC's bench, showing Kawamura sitting sideways, trainer wrapping her left leg. To a brace?
42' 1-0 van de Sanden drives down wide right again, Hamilton goes with her and chest bumps her to a stop. 44' 1-0 Hegerberg jukes down box left to 2m, ground cross to 6-top left, tightly-marked volley thereat shanks wide left. Ref gives gk, Lyon complain. 45' 1-0 Lyon ground cross from the right to 6-top left, RB R.Williams(?) sticks foot out and blocks ball down toward own right post D'Angelo alertly foot-dribbles it due rightward. +4'.
45+1' (of +4') 1-0 van de Sanden receives over her shoulder to box top wide right, drives an early ground cross through 15m that misses everybody. 45+5' (of +4') 1-0 van de Sanden holds at 18m box right, dinks a pass to box top mid-right for _ splitting the line. _ gets ball stuck under her feet, she digs it out and goes to 6m right post. D'Angelo +1 defender (or more) sprawl and make a wall, ball gets stuck again, she can't even get a shot off. Ball trickles out to box 5m right, she follows, turn-and-shoot blocked solidly by shins. Wow, a chance there, foiled by ... pre-season-ity of the feet. HT 1-0.
56' 1-0 Endless OL pressure in North Carolina's box. The ball rarely crosses midfield, and promptly comes back. OTOH, North Carolina absolutely rule the air on any corners or free kicks.
46' 1-0 OL subs in (1 of 6?) #7 Amel Majri for #8 Izzy Christiansen. 60' 1-0 Le Sommer shoots from 24m center, off crossbar 1/4 left, bounces up and away. 1023757383921627137 is not a valid tweet id 61' 1-0 North Carolina subs in: - (2 of 6) # Darian Jenkins for #11 Heather O'Reilly - (3 of 6) #14 Jessica McDonald for #23 Kristen Hamilton. 61' 1-0 OL subs in (2 of 6) #20 Delphine Cascarino for #19 Shanice van de Sanden.
If the Courage hang on and win, I'll be thrilled. If they don't, then I'll be disappointed, but still pleased with the performance. Either way, it's a win for the Courage and the NWSL. These teams might not be fully in form, but they're still loaded with talent, and NC has more than held their own in both games.
73' 1-0 Simon(?) right ck, backpass to box top center. Majri spots up, kicks right foot into scrum -- ball deflects to right post 1/3 high, D'Angelo dives and catches. She's been sharp all night. 75' 1-0 Le Sommer fk at ~25m box left, sent high to 8m center. Hegerberg twist-heads straight up as D'Angelo comes out but doesn't reach it. Ball drops behind D'Angelo, Renard rises for a header -- it deflects off McDonald's right knee onto left post, bounces straight away and North Carolina clears. NC looks like a team of destiny tonight OFF THE POST! @OLfeminin hit the woodwork. @TheNCCourage have 15 minutes to protect their lead... Can they do it?#ICCWomen pic.twitter.com/rMCXQ1SNXy— Women's International Champions Cup (@iccwomen) July 30, 2018
78' 1-0 Lyon subs in (3 of _) #29 Griedge M'Bock Bathy for #3 Wendy Redard. 80' 1-0 Lyon cross, cleared left. Majri settles ball 1-v-2, spins away from them down wide left, drives another cross through 3m, cleared left. Le Sommer settles ball 1-v-2, spin-splits them and darts down to 6-top mid-left. Backpass to Majri wide-open at 12m 6-left, one-touch shot to center low, D'Angelo catches again. 82' 1-0 North Carolina subs in (4 of 6?) #27 Morgan Reid for #29 Ryan Williams.
89' 1-0 Bronze right throw-in, Cascarino spins down wide right to 7m and crosses to 10m 6-left. Header across mouth to 7m 6-right, Henry(?) header blocked by Erceg jumping behind her, deflects over endline wide right. 90' 1-0 Simon right ck, to 12m 6-left. Header across box to 10m 6-right, header(?) goes wide right low -- and D'Angelo dives and catches anyways, because. +3'. 90+2' (of +3') 1-0 Lyon chase to box left foot, Roccaro cedes a corner.
90+3' (of +3') 1-0 Cascarino spins down wide right, cross to 6-top 3-right, D'Angelo comes out and catches it over Hegerberg. 90+4' (of +3') 1-0 Cascarino(?) drives down box right, gets tied up at box right foot ... loses it over. FT 1-0. What a fun result for North Carolina's bench players, including the int'l call-up replacement players. Lyon's ball control and pressure is nuts, but they're grumbling the same thing about North Carolina's header defense ... ... and the crossbar, both posts, and various body parts
Maybe we should halt all the drama about who's going to make the World Cup team, and just send the whole North Carolina team to France next year. A bit of a dent in the formidable reputation of OL.
Stats flew past. I saw 29%-71% possession , 7-23 shots, missed the rest. Medal ceremony! Bigwigs hand out medals for this. Two NC players shoulder-carry Kawamura amongst the procession. PSG, Lyon, and Man City are in preseason, still doing drills and shaking off summer rust. North Carolina's remaining roster, even without the missing players, was surely more in game shape, with better on-field communication. Lyon still gashed NC's defense for boatloads of nasty crosses. Scoring zero is just one of those inexplicable outcomes, like Keller shutting out Brasil (and Preki scored), or Howard holding Argentina to a draw (when Agudelo scored). It's still a very good result for NC's non-int'ls. It might do Lyon some good, too. But best of all -- now Europe will demand ICC'2019, for revenge
Eh, I bet going out in the R16 two years in a row in the UWCL is more of a dent than this is, especially considering how much Lyon was running NC ragged most of the match. That said, this is now the second tournament in a row Lyon hasn't won after the 2018 French league cup... (Between the UWCL, French league, and French cup, they haven't lost a tournament since the 2015 UWCL; no friendly tournaments that I can see since that time.) That said, even if Lyon was in preseason, this was definitely not a full-strength NC Courage by any means, so... Maybe the dent is bigger that it would be otherwise? IDK. We'll have to look back on this in three years' time to judge.
No, no, no, no, no!!!!! She had just come back from ACL. I can't believe she was injured once again. I am worried not only because she's probably going to miss WWC next year, but especially for her career.
I want to give props to Ryan Williams. She had played all of ten minutes in NWSL and got in the last 30 mins vs. PSG prior to starting against Le Sommer, Hegerberg, Henry & Company. All the NC players gave it all, but I think Hinkle had the toughest assignment physically and she survived the 90 minutes. I'm very happy for Sabrina D'Angelo. It was great for Riley to give her the start. She did everything she needed to do.
