65% pass completion vs Columbia, my standards may be too high but that's not good enough for me. He offers so little with the ball that Maguire and Stones are forced to take risks to move the ball forward.

Regardig Southgate and the discussions some of us are having... reminds me of a cartoon I saw in a magazine a few years back.

A woman's playing golf with her husband nearby and is stuck in a VERY deep bunker, right next to the green from which it looks impossible to get the ball into the hole.

But there's a dotted line, (which is obviously meant to represent the ball's line of travel), and it's going from her club, loops right up into the air before bouncing and has obviously just gone into the hole.

She's looking at her husband, saying something like, "So... I didn't keep my head down, I didn't keep my left arm straight, I didn't follow through my swing and... what else was I doing wrong?'.

    :D

    I'm just saying fellas ;)

I think we ALL know there are problems... with Southgate's picks, with individual player's form, with the players he couldn't pick because they were crocked or likely would be once they got there... with all SORTS of things.

But the thing is if ANYBODY had told us we'd beat 2 rather poor sides, (the ones we've really struggled with in the past), to guarantee qualification out of the group we'd have probably taken even that, rather thin, gruel.

If they'd also told us we could rest our 1st eleven and still only been narrowly beaten by one of the sides talked about as a 'dark horse' to win the competition, Belgium, we'd have probably been reasonably happy.

But if they'd told us we would outplay a south American side that had won their group containing Poland, (rated 8th in the FIFA rankings, IIRC), a decent Japan side, (that almost BEAT Belgium don't forget), and a very physically strong and athletic Senegal side, we'd have been ecstatic... PARTICULARLY if they'd told us it was in the circumstance we were denied at LEAST another one clear penalty... and THEN we'd won it on penalties.

I mean, we just don't DO that sort of thing nowadays.

So, for me, although there will continue to be problems with performances and selections, everything ELSE is gravy from here on in.

    YMMV of course :)

U.S. Spurs fan so ejoying seeing a few of those fellas playing for country - but where is Deli...he needs to be more assertive, no?

There are always injuries in football. If the absence of one player turns you from an attacking side to a defensive bunch of hacks, then you don't have a team - you have a good player.
Also worth noting that Colombia isn't a small nation, like Uruguay or Croatia, so you can't argue that they over achieve.

Jesus, that thread in the Knockout round is hilarious! Some deluded idiot thinks we were as dirty as the Colombians, lol.
It’s just a troll fest of nonsense with people who just have a dislike for the English, love it!!

Nothing seems to 'rile' 'Johnny Foreigner' more than England winning a football match lol. Its weird but its not like we have been particularly good in the past? I don't really 'get it', the old 'English fans are arrogant' and 'long ball' stereotypes make me laugh the most. At the end of the day the world can see just how despicable the Columbians were, the shoulder barge on Sterling, the headbutt, the kicking up of the penalty spot for gods sake! Awful, awful, awful and yet...............still its the English that get all the hate! :-D. I reckon everybody on here are actually Scots! I hope we win the World Cup again one day for a couple of reasons 1) It will be nice to win the World Cup again and 2) Just to watch the world go into meltdown! :-D. I feel for the mods of the English forum, I imagine they are fighting off the hate all the time. Reminds me a bit of Millwall, you know the 'no one likes us - we don't care' thing. Anyway lets hope that a match up with Sweden actually ends up being a football match, they are always close games with the Swedish.

I agree that the standard isn't high. However, you cannot judge teams on one off individual performances. Especially now that the minimum standard across Europe and South America is more uniform with greater defensive discipline. Writing off France because they lost to Portugal two years ago isn't fair on them. This is cup football. There always have been and always will be shocks. The France squad is stronger now. Belgium have the players to unlock a packed defence and they should have the spirit after that late winner. Not certain about their defence however. Brazil could be great but are capable of losing any given match. They're the three best teams with Uruguay a notch below, although they're the best organised.

Russia are having a host's tournament. Like South Korea did. They should come unstuck against Croatia but you never know.

I like Ireland but even with a genius manager they wouldn't beat any of the teams on the strong side of the draw.

IN bigsoccer , the few swedes who post are complete tools.
If they pull off a result I expect one guy who has trolled his forum for years will crawl out from under his rock.

That joker who writes about Zlatan in every post.

There's a reason some of us 'old hands' don't visit some of those threads.. which is a shame :(

It's OK going there as LONG as you don't waste time with people not interested in a real discussion... just a slanging match.

I'd advise using the 'ignore' feature for the worst offenders. If people just disagree, that's fine but people who go our of their way to annoy you... life's too short IMO.

SectionX, if memory serves. I think he's banned, but will probably create several socks if they do win.

I've got a bit too excited and booked flights out for the semi final.

Anyone else heading out there, or able to source me a ticket!

An England-Croatia game will be best for my bank balance* and safety....!

*Actually England not being their will be best for bank balance as can just spend what I already have on flights and write it off - but where is the fun in that!

Any news source for this? Tickets available with FIFA for Sweden for those who want them. Get a FanID now and it will make it much easier should we make it through.
