We have a saying in Scotland that we always suffer from "glorious failure" i.e we often do better than expected and then blow it at the end despite a great performance.

Exactly. I don't agree about all this talk of having to change everything to succeed. The day Japan start rolling around like Neymar on a consistent basis is the day I give up

So if Japan are ever 2 0 down with 20 minutes they should just give up and go home......it happens all the time. It's football, anything can happen especially against top opposition

Im swedish and you are right. Its like watching a div 3 game compared to yesterdays game. Japan have so much more finesse , technique, speed. But then again. Can't keep a cleen sheet.. Thats where its decided.

Any post match analysis turn the knife into the wound especially if they are totally correct as the most here.

That story about glorious defeat etc seems a bit exaggerated. Japan is historically a winner in a lot of sports, watch the Olympics they won in swimmimg, wrestling, archery, table tennis etc. With these sports the loser mentality doesn't apply?

Anyway which side will you root for from now on?
Support Belgium to be able to say that we lost against the winner is typically italian mentality so I avoid it.

Between Belgium, Brazil, France and Uruguay I'm for the winner between the frenchmen and the south americans while on the other side between Croatia, Russia, Sweden and England I'm for the croatians and especially Modric.
For me he's an example to be inspired by for a lot of japanese footballers with a similar set skills and skinny physique as Kagawa.

My point is that Japanese culture seems to glorify failure more than other cultures in general. I'm not saying that Japanese athletes are not successful in their own right. Defeats seem to resonate within the minds of the Japanese people more than success, hence why the "Agony of Doha" is more known than any other Japanese footballing accomplishment.

I don't think it's a case of loser mentality. Not everything is that black and white and you can be proud of your team even in defeat after a valiant effort. In terms of who I'll support now?......ummmm Belgium perhaps, Sweden at the weekend though haha

Japan really need to organize their defence better and find a better GK by the next WC. While our defence definitely cannot be as good as Juventus, etc.
If Japan's attack and midfield is as good as this Wc and the defence is as organized as in 2010, QF can be possible.

Kinda pulling for Uruguay but worried about Cavani's status.
Individually, I'm rooting for Allison since he's the only Roma player left.

LOL we all know the cycle from here. Japan will enter the next World Cup with higher expectations and end up falling in the group stage.

The third time in the Round of 16 certainly wasn't the charm.

Don't think he is suitable. If Japan can find Carlos Quieroz or someone suitable, I don't mind but if not I rather Japan just use a local coach.

Much respect to Japan. Beautifully played attacking-soccer with great tactics and techniques. Would've loved to see Japan advance to play against and possibly beat Brazil. At the risk of being accused of seeking to share in Japan's glory, I truly think Japan is the pride of Asian soccer at this moment.

Is not an idea of mine, JFA is talking to him and maybe he will become our coach soon...

The only positive thing of this defeat is we avoid to being raped by Neymar & Co.
But probably we'll meet them in the next summer so it's only a delay.

This WC was a successful one but left a worse taste in my mouth than the disaster in 2014. I'm still shocked at Belgium's fluke first goal. That game has to be the most devastating blow in Japan's history, surpassing the final match of the 1994 WC qualification.

It's a shame Japan has to wait for another 4 years. Being in Asia is depressing. I think Japan should send a full strength squad to the Copa America. As for the Asian Cup, give 2022 hopefuls chances.

Do you think that CONMENBOL want a full strenght JNT? Especially after a WC were Colombia lost to us, Perù didn't pass the group stage, Argentina did shit and only Brazil, till now, performed pretty good? They invited Japan before as underdog who has 0% to reach the quarterfinals.

The JNT they watch against Belgium is too dangerous, they can't risk to invite a team that can kick out a local NT and maybe threat the semifinals or worst.

That's why I'm pretty sure JFA will send a bunch of youngsters with 0 expectations apart gain some experience and show some skills to be selected in future "official" match aka WCQ2022.

I think maybe the likes of Takefusa Kubo, Nakayama and Ritsu Doan, etc. can go there to gain some experience.

Once France got the 2:0, the end result was never in doubt. This is what Japan must be aiming for.

Mind you, Uruguay didn't have a star attacker of Fellaini's calibre, so maybe the comparison is a bit unfair.

Sorry but Fellaini is not a star attacker of any sort. He's a telephone afro pole supersub and he scored overjumping Hasebe/whoever was the guy on him that's all.
Plus: Uruguay has a star attacker far better than Fellaini and he is actually injured, a dude called Cavani.
