    Note to all:

Football-related smack talk is in-bounds. If you get tired of hearing a poster yap about "Portugal didn't deserve to win Euro '16" or "Iran's never done anything in the WC" for the umpteenth time, add 'em to your ignore list and leave 'em there. If you feel that said poster is harassing you in particular, report it and we'll handle it.

HOWEVER, derogatory posts about another poster (ad hominem attacks), people group, race, ethnicity, gender, faith, sexual orientation, etc. have no place here. You do it once, you will receive a non-card warning. You ignore the warning and keep it up? You will be temporarily banned from this and the game thread. You see someone insult you, your people, your country? REPORT IT. Responding in kind will get you the same punishment.

Very quite in here...considering this is a big match with big implications!
Regardless of the score, I hope we see a fair and square game.

An acquaintance had attended the Japan Colombia game at Saransk and said that there were a lot of mosquitoes and moths in the stadium and even on the pitch. Basically buzzed around the players heads when they were static. I don't know how much of a factor this would be, but playing in such conditions, purely from a weather point of view, is something that the Asian sides would have more experience of than the Europeans.

Portugal are yet to play to their potential. I am hoping for an Iranian win here, though it seems difficult.

The Goat is probably not too happy seeing Harry Kane top the goal scorer charts.

I'm expecting Bernardo Silva to finally wake up and do something special.

You are right, no one is stepping it up for Portugal besides the goat. I heard rumours that some Iranian fans where keeping the goat awake all night. I doubt it's true, Iranians are stand up people. I work with a few and my neighbors are also Iranian.

May the best team win. Queiroz will probably have his passport revoked if he pulls off the win

I have no grudge against Portugal. However, this has been the most unpredictable two first rounds I have watched since way back when - 1966.

Iran has given me a good impression of stance, stamina and shrewdnes. They have a very competitive and cohesive team - and a proud nation of football fans. And don’t disregard the fact that Iran is a demographically interesting nation with many of the 77 million Iranians being younger people.

It will come as no surpise to me, If Iran does “The Portugal Job” tonight and goes to the knock out stages. In the knock out stages almost anything can happen.

I am biased since I support Iran as my second favourite team after The Seleção.

I think the referee Caceres suits Portugal, he pulls up most fouls and isn't shy to show some cards

Portugal are going home. Legit props to cr7 for carrying his friends thus far into the tournament but there's only so much he can do.

Maybe he should invite messi over at his so they can both watch the rest of the WC together.

I'm thinking 0-0 as long as CR7 is contained, which is possible considering Iran's defensive positioning.

Unless Cristiano gets Malaria and taken off the field I don't think it will be much of a factor.

i just want to say something to the portuguese: dont forget that you go into this match with a significant advantage: you need to tie, while we need to win. if this was not the case, we would have i would say a 50% chance of beating you.

if portugal scores early or first then it will be very very difficult for Iran to win. so in the unfortunate case that happens, and cronaldo scores another late goal or two off the counter off a depleted Iranian defense to give you guys something like a 3-1 win, please be classy and know that your pre-game advantage caused that. do not be like the mexican fans on bigsoccer who, despite playing an even game with us in 2006 and being gifted a goal acted like their 3-1 win reflected the game play. whatever happens, step up and show your personality.

That depends on which Portugal team shows up today. If they play like they did against Morocco then yeah fine, MAYBE 50%, but if its the team that should show up I would say more like 25% without the "pre-game advantage".

but for me its enough that a team like portugal is so nervous going into a match against Iran.

Not a fan of Portugal but a park-the-bus team like Iran doesn't belong in the 2nd round of the WC..

What? did you talk to the players or something and didnt inform anyone of how that conversation went?

how do you know they are nervous.. why would they be nervous? they are sitting in 2nd place, needing a tie..

Iran is a team who hasnt scored a goal in their 2 games.. but yet Portugal are the nervous ones?

    Interesting..

    lol..

you should watch the 2nd half of the Iran vs spain match and get you some entertainment. i also think that teams that lose 7-1 in the knockout rounds dont belong in the knock out rounds. they belong in the group stages with the likes of panama and saudi.

Based on what? what has our media shown you to believe they are nervous? how about Fernando Santos? what players? who? what have they said..

You guys honestly come up with shit out of no where..

show me what your referring to..

i havent come across a single thing via Portuguese media that would suggest they are nervous about the NT. They are to busy dealing with domestic league shit.. (which is a joke that they are even focused on it at this moment.. but, not the point)
