The stone cold penalty saved a probable goal!

A classic piece of defending to put the attacker off just enough to not give away the pen.

Of course he probably went too far as it was a pen - but he got away with it.

Agree - there was some bad luck

It helped in this game that Germany were behind in the game state for only 15 mins

    Agreed

I just don't think playing the band of 3 attacking midfielders works. They don't press or bring any aggressive defence, and then germany is often outnumbered in central areas

Germany have had this ongoing scoring issue for years now - the Brazil and Portugal games being rather exceptional in 2014 - but at key times Loew made Germany hard to beat.

It's hard to understand why he has gone so attacking now of all times

Kroos became utterly dominant when he started playing in that low left slot - he could get on the ball and drive forward or snap a pass to the top of midfield, or move it left

He played at a much higher tempo

Rudiger has all the attributes for a top defender, occasionally his positional play lets him down, conte at Chelsea rated him very highly

I am surprised many pundits especially G.Neville, Keane and Evra were ranting about Boateng as bad, I think he had a good game mins the red card. He was the one showing initiative and taking the ball forward. I think in Lows tactic, he depended on his CB to carry the ball forward which should have been the job of Kroos and Gundogan. The tactical foul for the first yellow was what we needed for the first Mexican goal

Agreed - Boateng is the free guy on the right to bring the ball out - we also saw in the 2nd half Kroos retreated to the LCB position and could then also bring the ball out decisively

I think the issue is not Boateng's fault but rather than too much play was going through him in the first 45

Because nowdays everybody is an "expert" just because they were famous football players. The great "expert" G. Neville telling who should play who shouldnt who is good who is bad was a coach at Valencia and we know how that went, Evra is even worse. The same goes in the german media i see many ex players all acting like some kind of "experts"

Rudiger is good on the ball, but not to the level of Hummels, Boetang or Sule. Rudiger should be used against a pacey or physical attack, this is where he excels, like Saj pointed out his positioning lets him down, but the same can be said for Sule.

When in possession, all our players move to the Swedes edge of box and wait for the CB to bring the ball. Low needs to fix that

Exactly - the spacing is awful - but I wonder if this focus on direct flank attacks is supposed to be the whole point?

This lack of a cover behind kroos gondo and infront of hummels boetang is the missing link, both kroos and gundo seemed nervous in possession and its hindering the center backs, it seems the core is playing with shakles on, loew really needs to bring 3 in to midfield

The Ruediger criticism here is rather harsh. He may not help in build up, but he's a text book no nonsense defender like Augenthaler.

And at this point of time he is a defender who can actually defend, not get caught out in the deep.

looks like we swicthed it up this year.
1982 WC lost the 1st match to Algeria 2-1
1986 WC drew the 1st match 1-1 and even lost the last one 2-0 to Denmark
    1990 WC no issues
1994 WC drew Spain 1-1 in the 2nd match
1998 WC drew Yugoslavia 2-2 in the 2nd match
2002 WC drew Ireland 1-1 in the 2nd match
2006 WC needed a 90+1 goal just to beat Poland in the 2nd match. Otherwise we would have drawn 0-0
2010 WC we lost to Serbia 1-0 in the 2nd match
2014 WC barely drew Ghana 2-2 in the 2nd match
2018 WC lost our 1st match 1-0 then barely beat Sweden 2-1, we seem closer to 1982 WC this team and broke the 2nd game issue.

Besides saying that Khedira and Ozil will have roles to play going forward, has Loew said anything about benching them against Sweden? Have Ozil or Khedira said anything about being benched and not even used s subs?
