According to a Technical University Dortmund paper Germany will have a hard path, especially the Ro16 could prove tricky. There's a fair chance Brazil will be waiting. Could be a great game but let's see how Germany perform in the group first.

That's right, we'll find out soon enough if it was a questionable call to only bring Rudy. P.Max is another. He can be used as a wingback (that is if you actually want the option to play with wingbacks). Not only did Max end the season with the 2nd highest assists tally, he also broke Lahm's record I hear. Max is now the defender with the most assists ever in the Bundesliga. Hector OTOH was relegated and Plattenhardt, who even is this guy? Also, #GomezOut.

Id rather have us playing Brazil in the R16 than in the later stages

Meh, I like coming into the tourney with some people doubting us because they are over-reacting to these friendlies. I can deal with how angsty it makes some folks around here lol

I don't think we lost anyone as significant as Gerd since 2014. And the questions about their collective harmony are all speculative or from outside the squad. For all we know Mesut & Ilkay being so under-fire could be bringing the team even closer together than we were 4 years ago *shrug*

I'm not complaining about the help lol. If the french wanted to implode as well, the table would really be setting itself up for us to beat Brazil 5-2 in the final after denying Messi again in the semis.

I know Geiger's hurt...which is why I've said repeatedly that Weigl should've been brought as Kroos' back up, despite Stöger & Bosz' incompetence...but I was arguing with your general logic that simply doesn't hold up when one actually looks at the history of the World Cup and how many countless "inexperienced" players made names for themselves with great performances in tournaments past.

And fair enough, I understand that it's a lot easier to act smug than to defend as silly a suggestion as Lars Bender for the NT :whistling:

Bender & Max, good god. You don't watch much Bundesliga do you? Stats without an understanding of their context are a great way to be misled.

I dunno, I think the extra pressure they'd feel to avenge 7-1 in a final would make them even more like to fall apart if we can score early...versus if we met them in a QF and they hadn't had as deep of a run behind them in which to get cocky.

Either way, I think it's wishful thinking that they don't top their group, they should roll into the SFs before they face a significant challenge.

The 94 team didn't play too bad. It was a decent world cup, with one 'off' day versus the Bulgarians. There are still happy memories from the tournament. Klinsi wundertor against the Koreans. The game against Belgium was fun too. I don't find the similarity with the current side, which I find a lot more talented.

If anything 98 campaign was poor. Can't say Germany played well in any game there.Probably only against Croatia till the Woerns red card.

it's worth remembering that the 94 world cup was the last tourney featuring a very high standard of play compared to the laughably weak tourneys in 02. 06 for example. Lot's of quality teams and players

The standard of play is only going to decline with the expansion to 48 teams.

The quality, but I think that the games might oddly enough be more interesting. As having more weak teams in the tourney could mean that mid-tier nations won't just go to the WC to bunker for three games, and we could see a lot more positive football to compensate for the lessened quality of the lowest seeds. And the easier qualification should encourage more middle-powers to play more positively.

    ...I hope...

like I thoroughly enjoyed today's match. The Saudi's were obviously outclassed, but they didn't just bunker & limit the damage, they played with courage and tried to string some passes together to maybe even score a memorable goal. And that's what I want to see more of from the smaller nations...

There is no difference between sports and politics when it comes to the NT. It's one and the same thing contrary to club football. Dage is trying to make one artificial difference up in order to avoid talking about this inconvenient under-topic.

I mean why am I not calling for creating another thread for talking kicker lineups since they are also so far detached from reality and anything that is actually happening around the NT?

Yeah my thoughts exactly but how was it again? If a player comes to the press conference does he start for certain or 100% not? Damn there was this rule....

Multiple posters have asked that this thread be for football.

So as a question of posting etiquette, i'd be grateful if we keep this thread on topic.

ZDF doesn't play gems like these any more?

Watching Voeller nod his head in an attempt to dance makes me laugh even to this day. Marginally better than his goal celebrations still.
