You're talking about playing old players (well over 30), bringing along a player who couldn't play (John O'Brien), and having a stale manager (Bruce Arena) lead us in 2006.

I'll take a pass on all of that and stick with the ideas in my post, not your worthless examples.

Brazil basically has done it, but their original squad for the 2012 Olympics had some glaring mistakes in the lineup (HULK), but they weren't corrected for 2014. With unbiased refs, Brazil wouldn't have made it out of their group in 2014 (playing "Captain"? David Luiz as a CD rather than DM... he is classically clueless in the highlights from the Germany match), but instead, they were allowed to progress until they got their $#!+ packed by Germany (see the entire Brazil defense).

However, Brazil's "2026" is this World Cup and they will be very tough to beat, especially if Neymar makes it back and doesn't play like a little [female dog]. From keeper to offensive midfielders, they are very strong and they even have quality forwards.

The U.S. isn't Brazil, but they should follow Germany and Brazil's example. And keep Bruce Arena as far away from the USMNT as possible.

But all those players were together in 2002, why didn't you use that example? The farthest the USMNT has ever gotten in a WC. The idea is to play a cohort together and then have them compete in their prime. Not when they are 4 years past their prime. You were being specious with your cherry picking.

The USMNT never had the player pool for any of this. Germany and Brazil could choose to use U23 players at one point and ride them for 6 years because all those U23 players are about as good as their prime age players at the time. Spain did it too. I think with Germany, under Klinsman, it was a choice. I think with Spain and Brazil, it was more just happenstance. The best players were young and the players 4-8 years older than them weren't that great.

That is where the USMNT is now. I don't think you can even put the USMNT top 11 together without 5 U23 players. The other 6 spots are two 24 year olds, three 25 year olds, and whomever you think is the top striker (25 or 28 yrs old).

No choice has to be made, we are going to fall into it.

It's not a good idea. In fact it's a terrible idea.

The same people who think this is a good idea are the ones who whine about every roster announcement and always want MORE new blood and MORE experimentation.

So you stand by your point.....except you don't because you have a bunch of exceptions.

Why can't we just agree that dogmatism is bad and we should be more open-minded.

The idea that we should just forfeit every player in the pool that's over 25 is absurd.

But who has a problem playing the kids?

The issue is your irrational belief that we should only play the kids.

They had not been playing together for 8 years or more, as was the condition in the initial post, not by you, to which I was replying.

Again, we should not forfeit every player. Im sure I don’t have to say that we aren’t in a position to forfeit any striker or fullback right now. Positions of necessity warrant exceptions. But people arguing that any 27 year old center midfielder should be playing right now for “leadership” are absolutely crazy. Same thing with anyone arguing a 26 year old center back should be playing over the 6 or 7 younger ones who have been getting looks. We have NOTHING to play for.

Let the players play, develop chemistry, make some mistakes. Way too much emphasis is put a on winning friendlies. If we beat France, we still aren’t going to the World Cup. If we lose to France, we won’t care in 2022.

I’ve littered this site with pages of “play the kids” debates since we didn’t qualify. Plenty of people on here have a problem with it.

You know, I actually typed a longer response to this but I just don’t want to debate this again so I’ll just tip my cap and be on my way.

people have a problem with ur hard line of over 25 or whatever that a player can't be called up.

    that makes no sense.

you are just going over the top people want new players they just don't want some artificial age barrier.

I think an age restriction may be a bit too much. However, I can empathize with those who want it to be applied. The players who played in last summer's U20 and U17 World Cups seem to be so promising. Sprinkle in vets who are under the age of 23 who are eligible for the Olympics and we really don't have to rely on too many older players. No more than a handful in my honest opinion.

Good luck telling a bunch of young 26 year olds that their national team career (and their livelihood) is nothing.

Excluding a huge chunk of the pool is just silly. And you're not even doing it for a sure thing. It's all just a hope that the younger guys will benefit from it.

You'll be saying the same thing about the Gold Cup next year, which would qualify us for an important tournament in 2021.

There's no end to the exclusively youth movement argument.

To be fair 2021 may not have any important tournament. So that part of your argument is up in the air.

    Like who?

The Big Soccer USMNT boards are almost exclusively filled with people who don't want to play anybody over about 28 years old. Ever.

Michael Bradley was 29 years old, one of the best players in the pool and team captain and people here wanted him banished forever.

And for what? So Christian Roldan could disappear for 70 minutes at a time in his several appearances?

The Confederations Cup has been a fixture for 25+ years.

I don't think a rumor should qualify as it being "up in the air."

The Confederations Cup being played in 2021 is more of a sure thing than, say, Christian Roldan.

The rumor has billions of dollars attached to it (and FIFA loves money) so there is a bit of credibility than when compared to most internet rumors

And let's say there is by some miracle a 2021 Confederations Cup. It probably won't be taken seriously by the teams like Germany or whatever supposedly great team makes it there. Also it won't be played in Qatar so the argument that many people make about it helping us play in World Cup venues is down the toilet too.

So I don't see it as an important tournament at all. Just three guaranteed competitive games at a neutral site we may never play at again.

So you think it would be a miracle if a tournament that's been around for a generation and is on the FIFA calendar was actually played?

    OK.

    Your opinion is noted.

It's a FIFA tournament against some of the best countries in the world a year before the World Cup.

But, yeah, it wouldn't be important.

    Sure.

    Yes.

When there's Billions of dollars on the table for it to be scrapped I think it will take a miracle for it to happen.

    Call me crazy.

Or backups from a Euro team, New Zealand and/ or host Nation which will be crappy.

    Yawn.

The backups from a Euro team won the whole thing last time and would be a stiff test for our side no matter what.

Good thing you're not in charge of anything.

We can play backups of Euro teams in a Friendly though on a neutral site.
It does not make the competition great that those backups won.

Hey thanks for telling me how I’m going to think. If you wouldn’t mind, can you also let me know where I’m going to want to go to dinner in a few hours? See, I have to plan now so I eat fewer calories cuz I’m not as skinny as I used to was

Did you even read any old posts? Cuz it kind of seems like you just signed up and started arguing with anyone who would listen, like a guy who runs into a brawl and starts throwing punches when he has no idea why everyone is fighting in the first place.
