souvenir from Russia

Discussion in 'World Cup 2018 - Russia' started by Nu_nusik, May 10, 2018.

  1. What do you want to bring from Russia? What souvenir? I want to make presents for my guests. What will you be happy? maybe a commemorative coin, a banknote? maybe a t-shirt, a cap? candy? vodka? matryoshka, ushanka, magnet? What do you want to bring home?

Actually, I would like a papakha more than a ushanka, but just fashion tastes. I'm sure that ushankas will be popular. Of course Matryoshkas, vodka and candy. The top 3 right there. I have an affinity for communist era mementos so a little bookend of Marx/Lenin or a small bust would be an interesting piece for my collection (although I'm not sure I would be allowed to leave Federation territory with an old bust). Back in the day I would have done maybe some propaganda posters but I just don't have the space for them. It saddens me. I have some from Cuba for films/documentaries for instance.

What Vodka is a "legitimate" one that Russians drink that is not low end but not exported? That would be really cool for me to give. Real Russian Vodka that Russian drink and not found in the US for instance.

Definitely will be bringing back a winter hat. I already have something similar to a ushanka, so maybe I'll look out for a papakha.

A football related Matryoshka, a Russian football shirt (eg. Russia/Zenit/Rubin Kazan/someone else), something to remember each city by, cups from each match/fanzone, some sort of art or print.

Cool!! I've never really liked them or had anything to do with them. I've seen Zenit play twice and will be in the city for a week. Will check the vibe over there!

matryoshkas, ushanka, papaha-a great idea, Navy telnyashka-this is less known, but could be a very cool item, may try to look for rarer genuine CCCP swag.

Defo some Russian football kits tbh.

One of the players and my club Sydney FC was at Dynamo Moscow for some years as well so might get a kit from them.

    Good thread.

I suspect that I will return home with a nice bottle of Vodka for myself, matryoshkas as gifts, and some Soviet-era type printed materials, e.g. posters or postcards.

And all going well some new friends and fantastic memories.

I will look to buy a Sturmanskie Gagarin mechanical watch. Commemorates Yuri Gagarin's spaceflight and looks simply astonishing - a design classic!

Not to worry about broken bottles ,you could buy the vodka in duty free shops, and carry on plane, same goes for caviar.

Very good vodka to buy is Beluga vodka, they do nice packaging with glasses.its well worth spending a few rubles more on decent vodka.

Thanks for an idea, they are not too overpriced at Duty Free in comparison to the supermarkets in Russia? But at least I won't have problems traveling it.

Okay, a more serious answer here you probably want. That's great that you want to get a gift for your guests. I'd say you can't go wrong with a fridge magnet - inexpensive, but doesn't take up a lot of packing space and will last with you forever. I still have the fridge mangets a couple of my previous Airbnb hosts gave me.

Vodka might be difficult for a person to carry around. If my host bought that for me, I'd be very greatful, but to be honest - would be difficult to carry around with lots of flights and stuff within Russia, I'd prefer to travel and pack light. T-shirt is nice but you never know about the size. Matryoshkas and ushankas are also a great choices - very Russian and I think every traveller to Russia will want to come home with one of those.

Scarf swap with other group stage opponents is most valuable in my opinion. Hope to meet some genuine fans
