Current list of #USMNT manager candidates. Ramos, Tata, Marsch, Berhalter, Friedel, Osorio, Vermes.— Rob Stone (@RobStoneONFOX) May 5, 2018 Okay then.
Half of them shouldn't be on the list at all, frankly. The only two on the list that I'm genuinely interested in are Tata and Marsch, and really Tata by virtue of his resume and respectability more than what I think he'll bring to us tactically. I could see Osorio, too, sure, but I wouldn't consider his case particularly compelling.
Indeed. The problem isn't that there are a bunch of domestic candidates, it's that most of them are the wrong ones. At least Marsch is on the list.
Well, this generates some questions... 1) How is there already a short list, if the GM was supposed to be in charge of hiring a coach, and we don't have a GM? 2) Why was USSF going on about waiting until after the WC if they were only going to consider domestic candidates (other than Osorio)? We could have had any of these guys (other than Osorio) in place by January camp. Was all this just a money-saving strategy to keep Sarachan in place as a lame duck? 3) Maybe Ramos and Friedel are merely courtesy interviews, since they're legendary players for the USMNT and are coaching at reasonably high levels, but why would we be seriously considering guys who have no track record of success coaching at the pro level? I know Friedel has had a better than expected start with NE, but that doesn't really count.
How can there be a short-list of candidates if we haven't even hired the GM whose job it is to hire the coach?
I assume that other candidates will be added after the WC (and European seasons, which are concluding) are concluded. I certainly hope you're right about Ramos and Friedel. Neither has shown any managerial chops to date... And I want to know why the hell they're seriously considering Vermes, for that matter. He's practically the epitome of "good enough for MLS but not the 'next level.'" As for the GM thing, I think they've shown by their actions that the GM will more than anything be a symbolic position only to shelter the fed itself from the appearance of culpability, as opposed to this last cycle where it was evident to all that Sunil had to fall on his sword for the bad judgment of re-signing Klinsmann. What's more, no one seems to want that job--and who would?
His player pedigree. How else? I'd like to think that our fed is smart enough to realize that he's not a genuine candidate at this point, but I don't actually trust that our fed is smart enough to realize that he's not a genuine candidate at this point...
Aaaarrgghh!! ******** US Soccer!! ******** them hard and violently!! I am a rugby guy. I became a rugby guy because I wasn't good enough in college to make the soccer team and this consistent ********ery but both national organizations is driving me insane!!. This list is insane! Nothing should happen until a GM/TD is found! But then again after getting rid of Sunil we hired his second in command because we are idiots!! We should hire a guy like Viera (FTR I am a RBNY fan so I am not a homer) for TD not him specifically but someone who has had to spend time in the US soccer world and understands the talent out of our academy, our colleges, our pro clubs on all levels and internationals. Plus he is from Europe so he knows the demands from all levels over there. Let someone like that pick the coach and if the coach is domestic or foreign, he can help in the half the coach doesn't know.
lots of uninspiring picks, only one Klinsmann-esque disaster pick; Friedel. Id be okay with Beerholder actually. Hes who im pulling for.
The tweet immediately followed this one: The more I watch this #NYRB side, the more I see Jesse Marsch as the next #USMNT manager pic.twitter.com/ZvVojgfXvx— Rob Stone (@RobStoneONFOX) May 5, 2018 So, I think you're right.
1) Hiring is not necessarily searching. My guess, and this is only that no inside info, is the board will get a pool of say 10 coaches. Have interviews and get input from the TD to narrow it to 4. Then the GM comes in to add input into the final hire. 2) They actually had to extend Sarachan after January, through June if I remember right. But yeah they are probably going through domestic managers, mostly preseason, and then contact other coaches as their leagues wrap. And then international coaches after thr cup. Its kind of how I thought theyd do it, 3) They love Friedel and Ramos. So I believe their is legit interest. If its Brad they would get a much more experienced number 2. Ramos to keep him happy. 4) Marsch maybe, Osorio is meh, Vermes and Tata I think maybe better at club teams, very hands on who want well defined roles with repitition and familiarity and thats harder to get in small camps.
Vanney is the best candidate all around if we are talking about domestic. Foreign, idk. The Chivas guy Almeyda was really smart. He is Argentine and his pro playing career was in Serie A. You can read more about him here: https://www.fmfstateofmind.com/2018...ivas-guadalajara-shouldnt-fire-matias-almeyda As long as he picks guys who are motivated and rejects the marketing dolls, he will succeed and we have plenty of motivated players. The guy wins trophies. That's the way I would go. I backed the Klinsmann hire which I don't regret but I didn't back the extention which I thought was insane. Unfortunately, I backed the Arena 2017 hire which I do regret. I should have seen he was fading when he closed out his Galaxy years.
Look on the bright side: at least we're not USA Cricket, which was banned from international competition due to even worse corruption and incompetence than either the USSF or US Rugby would ever be capable of.
My point of view is quite different from most. If we are going to re-arrange the deck chairs, then stick to Sarachan. Not broken, don't fix. When Sunil went for Klinnsman he was trying to break the paradigm. He wanted the German system. It didn't work out for two reasons- JK himself caused too many enemies, and we went through a bad generation of players at the end of his tenure. I still think Sunil's idea has merit. We should bring in the German system. Another idea out there that makes sense is to use a former World Cup star and let him develop as a coach. But as the JK experience showed, he has to be of the right temperament, have the right communication skills, and have common sense. Look at the success of Zidane (he does have great players, but his results exceed expectations), and Viera (NYCFC has come into its own). So my off-the board suggestion is Bastian Schweinsteigger. No doubt he will be the coach of Germany some day and will lead them to another WC. He has it all. Just surround him with a quality assistant (Sarachan), and we will improve. My two cents!
