I'm hoping to be able to visit the city of Barcelona in late August and want to ensure that I'm there when I can catch a home game. When is the August fixture schedule typically released? I'd prefer to see a meaningful game (league or cup), if possible, rather than a friendly.

    Thanks in advance!

The Liga schedule is usually released midweek around the third week of July. It will likely be out around July 21-23.
The August schedule for specific dates and kickoff times should be out the beginning of the month.
The LFP proposed that the 2018-19 season begin the weekend of August 18-19 which is a week or two earlier than recent schedules. The Spanish Federation (RFEF) has the final say on when the season starts and ends.
Barcelona doesn't involved in Copa del Rey until the fourth round and the date for the second leg at home against a lower league club is normally in early December.
Matchday 1 of the Champions League group stage is mid-September.
And if it doesn't matter to you which team/stadium to visit, Barcelona and Espanyol alternate home Liga dates: If Barcelona is playing at home, Espanyol is playing away. And vice-versa.

Thank you for the detailed info. One follow up question: when you say that the August will be available the beginning of the month, are you referring to May or July?

The general Liga schedule of who Barca plays each round will be released mid-July.
Exact dates and times for each month of Liga fixtures is released near the start of said month. So August dates/times will be released around the start of August, September dates released near beginning of September, and so on.

And there’s also the Spanish super cup.. Those dates are usually confirmed well before La Liga fixtures come out. As league champs , Barca would host the second leg v Sevilla (probably 4 to 7 days before the league season begins).
