Just to note a different way to acknowledge the fabulous recruiting magnet that is Stanford in recent years.....

Within a week of this time: Andi Sullivan and Jane Campbell are on the US senior team as is Cardinal sophomore Tierna Davidson who acquitted herself magnificently in thee games of the She Believes Cup. Then there are four Stanford players called up to the U23s (twice as many as any other college) who will be playing against three NWSL teams for three games in the next 7 days....And then there are 5 players on the U20 team (that just finished two games in France) who will be on the pitch for the Cardinal this coming fall -and 4 of those started and went the full 90 on Wednesday. So there are 12 recent* Stanford players achieving at the highest level on national teams 9 of whom will be on the pitch in Palo Alto this fall! Fun time on the farm!

*not to leave out Kelly O'Hara, but 8 years ago is not recent....

Any word as to why Kyra Carusa transferred to G’town? (Too much competition for playing time at forward?!)

She graduated. I know Amack last year could not get into masters program at Stanford so she ended up transferring to Vanderbilt for her 5th year. I am not sure if it’s the exact same scenario, but I am certain she is not leaving for the reason you stated.

who cares. Stanford has very generous financial aid. If her family had the median West Virginia income (it probably doesn't though, cause it's US soccer) she would get a full ride without any athletic scholarship. She's much better off graduating from Stanford and never playing than going almost anywhere else and being a 4 year starter. This is relevant to the other threads of why restrictive GDA rules without full funding are stupid.

Well given that this is a soccer forum, fans do care who will be impact players or not. It's a legit questions.

from gostanford, com: FOUR TO WORLD CUP

Congratulations. Now go win it all.

    Some rambling thoughts:

It says the U20 tournament runs from Aug 5-24. It would not be unrealistic to expect the U20 players to not get a run-out until the 4th weekend of play.

We can cope w/o Naomi and Smith here. Coz we didn't have them in last year's championship run.

Sam was injured for most of the championship season and we were able to play and win w/o her in the lineup.

Kiki will be harder to replace in the interim. Best right back in the game. I'm sure Jojo, Malatskey, or next year's left back Sierra will have something to say about that.

So for the first 3 weekends, we'll be missing 1.5 players that participated in last year's championship run. I can live with that.

Civana must be bummed getting her foot in a boot after the last U20 camp. Their loss is our gain. If Civana, Alana, and Xiao are good to go opening day, we'll be in very good shape.

My concern is that we will lose Tierna during USWNT CONCACAF qualifications in October[?], in the middle of conference play and possibly NCAA. A left-footed player who can play 3 positions in the back and 3 in midfield, she's a lock to go represent her country. I hope that the team would have jelled by then to offset her absence.

29 on the roster - that's the largest roster I've ever seen Stanford carry, at least in the last 19 years. If every one of last season's participants pass fitness and medical, it would not surprise me to see 5 frosh redshirt. Even then, there would still be 24 healthy bodies, the vast majority who will believe they should be playing more. First-world problems.

Camp commences in 2 weeks? I'll post more ramblings by then.

A new season awaits. What can we expect of the 2018 edition of the Card?

Assuming that everyone will be declared fit and healthy to take the field, there will be a few scratches during the season.

4 players - Kiki, Naomi, Sam Hiatt, and Sophia Smith - will not be available at the start of the season as they are competing in the U20 tournament in France through late August. If they come back fit and healthy, they could get a run-out by the 4th weekend.

The women’s CONCACAF competition is from Oct 4-17. Tierna has been starting for the Nats this year, so she will most likely be on that roster. Don’t know how that will affect Tierna’s availability for the games against the LA schools; highly unlikely that she will be available for any Pac games during that stretch.

Who will start in goal? Last season saw a rotation between AJ and Rood. Rotating means you do not have a clear #1. Will Katie Meyer win the job outright? If Katie does not earn the nod, expect her to redshirt instead of keeping the seat warm as GK3.

Left back is McG’s to lose. Sierra should make it interesting.

Right back is Kiki’s to lose. Until she comes back, Jojo and Malatskey should be able to hold things down.

Tierna and Cook were paired the most at CB last season. Center back pair Sam and Naomi will be in France to start the season. Serafin should see some time as well.

Andi has exhausted her eligibility, but midfield incumbents Jaye and Jordan remain. Best player to play 6 or 8 really is Tierna. A much better midfielder than defender. Midfield is where Tierna can make the biggest impact in the game; not sure how she will be utilized this season. Macario’s best position is at 10; we might see more of her there and Jaye will play a deeper role shielding the back. Belle played well when called upon last season and will likely see more time this season.

Haley steadily improved throughout the season and will likely play as 9. Civana and Smith could play there as well. Xiao will start at left if healthy. Civana and/or Smith will play on the right. 4 bodies to contest 3 spots, if Macario plays as 10. A good problem to have.

The non-conference schedule will feature games against heavyweights such as North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Santa Clara. 1st game will be at Pacific.

Any idea why Macario did not play against Davis?
