b.t.w., sports fans, Nagbe had a good game for Atlanta today. And I'm the last guy to hype Nagbe.

there should be a thread for "players I wish the best at club, may they make a million and enter the MLS hall of fame and live to be 100 but please, please, don't ever accept a call up to the USMNT".

High on my list: Nagbe, Chandler, Acosta, Arriola.

Then there's the "somebody explain to me why these guys perform so well for country while sucking at club" - i.e. Klose (tied for record for goals at World Cup!!), Shea, Morris, Zardes, eidt: I could probably add Wood in there.

That looks like what you have referred to as the blob forward?

His u20 performances don’t really matter at this point, but if you have to label it, Delgado was the weak link of the back 6 that forced other players to drop back and help him, reducing our ability to attack. The kid isn’t even a dmid.

Why are you trying so hard? Seriously, where does it hurt? Or are you getting paid, maybe? Just asking out of professional curiosity.

Serbia bedded into midfield making it hard to advance the ball thru midfield. That made it hard on Hyndman and Zelalem. Plus, they extended that conservative approach by attacking only over the wings with one forward right and one left.. That made it easy on Delgado who was defending mid centrally as the 6. . Are you happy now? You no longer have to make up lies. See? If you had really analyzed the game (you can go back and confirm what I am telling you) you wouldn't have to make up bshot which then undermines your credibility.

the weak link was the lack of a target forward. Jamieson got knocked out of the game early. I don't know where you get the 2 blob forward line. We had zero blob forward. We needed one..

The state of US soccer is what hurts. It is sad that someone would actually think Delgado is part of the solution and that Bruce Arena’s assistant coach for the last 30+ years is fit to run our national team.

    Teams managed
    1976–1977
    University of Rochester (assistant)
    1983 Cornell University (assistant)
    1984–1987 Virginia (assistant)
    1988–1997 Cornell University
    1997–1999 D.C. United (assistant)
    1999–2002 United States (assistant)
    2002–2007 Chicago Fire
    2008–2016 LA Galaxy (assistant)
    2017 United States (assistant)

Sarachan isn't Arena's assistant coach so let's talk about Delgado. I'm serious here. Where does it hurt? Roldan scored a goal today. Delgado would never do that. I'm not knocking Roldan. He does what he does. If I'm hyping Delgado it is because of what he does in the middle third. Yes, he is the answer. We didn't have mids who played the middle third the way it should be played. Sarachan played Delgado with a new 6 who was "not Bradley". He played Trapp at the 6. Trapp can pass the ball. Bradley cannot. He played Delgado in the middle third. Neither Nagbe nor Arriola nor Acosta nor Roldan can play the middle third like Delgado. De;gado is the answer. Sarachan is the anwer.

So far. Only so far. The next step is Bolivia, France and Ireland. For all I know, the marketing pressure gets to Sarachan and he plays Acosta and Nagbe in the middle third and Trapp/CCV/Miazga get mauled and we have more losses, more blame for the wrong guys, more confusion. However, so far I am a big Sarachan fan for re-uniting Steffen, CCV, Miazga and Delgado with Trapp as the 6 which means we have penetrating passers at the 6 and 8. No more of the stupid "that run, that turn, you cant teach speed". No, with Sarachan we have "nobody is faster than the ball".

    Sit back and enjoy.

I thought Delgado was the weak link back then and wondered if the team wouldn't have been better off playing Acosta at his midfield position which he had recently played for the national team and play the left back who was ok but not great (Requejo I think). Canouse getting hurt at the same time made it a bigger mess. I thought Delgado was surprisingly good in the last US game so I don't really care how he looked then. I wonder if he would have been ok playing the 8 with Canouse behind him as even now he doesn't seem to be a 6.

Sarachan should be taking trips to Frankfurt, to france to visit Siebatcheu, etc.

Does he not want to build an awesome team for himself? Seems like a an old-guard puppet to me.

If Bradley and Altidore are called into the euro friendlies but not chandler, then Sarachan is a Arena Puppet.

Not only is Sarachan Arena's puppet but as the detail implementation guy he is likely largely responsible for the inept 4-1-3-2 that the US played needing only a point at T&T!

Sarachan said the relationship has been so long and successful because the two men trust and complement each other. Arena, 65, is the strategist, a big-picture guy who sets the tone and direction for the team. Sarachan, 62, is hands-on, a high-energy details guy who understands Arena's vision and implements it.

He only spent half his career (numbers rounded for simplicity) as Arena’s assistant and head coaching experience consisted of 10 years at his alma mater and 5 seasons in Chicago that started well but declined after losing Bocanegra and Beasley.

19 years as his college buddy’s assistant...
    1984–1987
    Virginia (assistant)
    1997–1999 D.C. United (assistant)
    1999–2002 United States (assistant)
    2008–2016 LA Galaxy (assistant)
    2017 United States (assistant)

    19 years on his own...
    1976–1977
    University of Rochester (assistant)
    1983 Cornell University (assistant)
    1988–1997 Cornell University
    2002–2007 Chicago Fire

On June 20, 2007, Sarachan was fired as head coach, by Fire GM John Guppy.[3] Sarachan finished with a 55–50–31 league record with the Fire and 75–57–33 across all competitions.

I doubt it. More likely, Arena went to Sarachan and told him what he wanted and told him to train the players accordingly.

b.t.w., encouraged to see Sarachan is only 62. He has many fruitful years ahead of him.

hmmm...so you're saying nagbe looks better under tata martino than he did under arena, JK (and to some extent, Porter)???.....crazy, right??

Didn't they just up his salary to $1m, like more than double what he was making previously? They did a black panther tifo featuring Nagbe before the game on Sunday, apparently.

I've never had any problem understanding Nagbe. Never sat around wondering "gee, gosh, why isn't he playing like (insert description of Superman here)?"

    Klinsmann got it.

He actually played most consistently under JK. He played alright in a limited role in 2015/16 and I always wanted to see more of him. I’ve never had that feeling when he has been a starter and it was often the opposite in 2017.

Let’s let Tata get more than one solid game out of him before we give him too much credit. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens, but it did take him 6 games to put on a decent display. Nagbe even had one good game under Arena.

    BriSciar's predicted roster for June.

    http://americansoccernow.com/articles/predicted-usmnt-roster-for-may-june
    Bobby Wood
    Aron Johannsson
    Tim Weah
    Andrija Novakovich
    Rubio Rubin

    Weston McKennie Tyler Adams
    Marky Delgado
    Wil Trapp Kenny Saief
    Darlington Nagbe
    Kelyn Rowe
    Sebastian Lletget
    Christian Pulisic

    Matt Miazga Cameron Carter-Vickers
Erik Palmer-Brown John Brooks (Injured?)/Tim Parker DeAndre Yedlin
Timothy Chandler Jorge Villafana Antonee Robinson

GK:Zack Steffen Bill Hamid Alex Bono

So, my recommendation to Sarachan is as follows:

Let's bring guys who are in top form, healthy and performing. Let's forget the old guard unless there is a compelling reason to bring them. Under that criterion we remove: Wood, Johansson, Nagbe, Rowe, Lletget, Brooks, Chandler. If these guys prove me wrong in the remaining time available, then great, we reconsider. Praying for Lletget's continued re-habbing.

With the players remaining I could create a lineup as foll:

    -----------Adams---Novakovich----Pulisic
    -------------------McKennie----Delgado
    -----------------------------Trapp
    -------Vfana---Miazga----------CCV------Yedlin
    -----------------------GK: Steffen

I think the problem here is 1) a lack of a hold up9 so I would bring Jozy instead of Wood. Jozy's hold up game has improved significantly.2) For getting behind the defense we have Adams and Pulisic and McKennie. Weah and Novakovich will start getting increased minutes.3) Instead of Johannson I would bring Doom Dwyer in the second striker position. I'm leaving the misspelling in there.

So, I would refashion the players into a 352(3142) as follows. I have Long in for Parker because Long plays right side and Parker has been playing left.

    ------------------------------Jozy-----Pulisic
    ------Adams
    -------------------McKennie
    -----------------------------------------Delgado
    ---------------------------------------------------------------Yedlin
    -----------------------------Trapp

    ---------------Miazga---------CCV-----------Long

    ----------------------------------GK

I have Adams instead of Saief because Adams can get on the end of crosses, something which escapes Jozy every time. Also Adams can be our wild card and be shifted back case need.

Well, he only played for the same coach in college and at Portland so other than a few sessions with national team coaches he's only had one guy for the last 10+ years.

Throw in Bedoya. why does he continually get called up?

What happened to Acosta? A year ago folks kept wanting him to move to Europe and get more NT duty.

    No kidding.

In the meantime, here's a little piece on Aaron Long's rise worth reading.

    https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...red-bulls-defender-aaron-longs-rise-mls-elite

I have him getting the call up for June friendlies as you can see from my post above. Sarachan has to ignore salaries and go for it. We might be able to double Long as a fb when needed. Need to see his ceiling.

It's a nice little story and good for him but he isn't the type we need to be calling in right now. He's still young enough at 25 but his ceiling is limited. It's much better to use the limited time we have to evaluate CCV, EPB and Miazga who are all younger and playing and training at a higher level. If they want to call him in for a camp cupcake I'd be ok with it but I wouldn't bring him to Europe in June.

Well, there is a game against Bolivia in the US before departing for Europe and 3 games total. We called in Tim Parker. We should look at Long. He will be 29 for Qatar so the age is right. I'd rather look at these guys early than late. Miazga, CCV will get the minutes and we will start to look at EPB. Defender of the year in USL aint bad and he has shown well against decent competition like CCL.

We have Gold Cup + Copa America coming up. Need to check guys out now. It's not enough with Miazga and CCV and EPB. We need more guys and now is the time to look at the younger, untried guys. Next year we will have guys like Brooks available - or maybe not.

By the way, Fullham beat Millwall today to stay in 2nd place and promotion to EPL next year with Ream going 90'. Most likely Cardiff overtake them with more games to play but they should have a good chance in playoff. We'd probably want to look at Ream again if he is headed to EPL. Hwvr, Ream is 30 so probably not going to make a WC.

I guess my subs to complete the roster would be

    ----------------------Weah-----Novakovich/Dwyer

    ----saief------------parks----------roldan------------lletget

    -----------------------ream----epb-----Licaj

Zimmerman, Glad are guys who could show us something in the next weeks altho Real StLake look bad at the mom which will not help Glad. Canouse is probably one of our better dmid prospects if he were healthy. Durkin may or may not be improved by then. Williams is out. Having Licaj there helps with replacement at left or right fb because he plays both pretty well. Ream can play lb.

whether you want to call in Long or not (I personally think he's behind a few other CB's that I'd prefer) ...his story is the PERFECT counter-point to all the people out there who think that the decrease in Americans playing in MLS is due to the American players not being good enough.

This quote really stood out to me:

"There are lots of players who are good enough, but for some good reason you don’t get lucky enough, you don’t catch your break."

I'll tell you what the reason is: MLSUM gives a rat's ass about the USMNT - even though it owns the rights to the revenue that the USMNT generates.

Its pretty sad that the domestic soccer league in the USA has a bias against playing Americans...the only league in the world that favors foreigners over domestic players and that stories like Long's are so rare in recent times, and have to involve so much "luck" ....really speaks to the lack of opportunity young americans are facing in MLS....and I think personally think that a lot of these foreign imports are not any better than the Americans they are displacing, even though the majority seems to think contrarily.

Another point from Long's story that is so important is just because a player isn't deemed "good enough" at 20,21,22,23 etc doesnt mean that they are just never going to be good enough. So many on here are so quick to write off any player who doesnt get playing time on team XYZ...and it baffles me.

Can you name 8 cb's you put ahead of him who will be on the right side of 30 in 2022? (Leave Brooks out since he is injured because he may be back by next year ofc but then somebody else will be injured so Brooks can represent that guy)/

    8? why 8?

some of the CB's I think can still play a role in 2022 are: miazga, brooks, ccv, epb, opara, parker, o'neill, besler

    long's certainly in the mix....but i dont know if he's in the top 4 ...only 4 make a 23.

i think other players like miles robinson, redding, stanko etc etc....could come on strong too....
