So you're the one to blame for build-out lines! :)

I once had a "varsity" girls HS team take three tries to get a goal kick to clear the PA.

Now if Chicago would only accede to my suggestion of a water-polo restart for U-littles in all cases other than throw-ins, we could move on to weightier matters.

And for throw-ins, we use an Aussie-rules bounce by the ref.

"Offside is like pornography, I know it when I see it." Overheard walking by a ref tent last weekend. Just kept walking

U11 boys championship game in a weekend tournament. I had an 8th grader AR and a 9th grader AR. Not referee grades. School grades. One asked me who the teams were. I said "One is Copa" (which it was) "and the other is Cabana." The more seasoned referees in the room chuckled. My ARs had a blank look wondering what was so funny.

HS Indoor game yesterday. Defender clearing the ball out his half and attacking player runs full speed through him and plows him over about 1 second after the ball leaves his foot.

    Me: Yellow Card
Him: Sorry, football season just got over. Still got a little bit of that left in me.

At one indoor facility where I officiate, it has a field with the traditional outdoor penalty and goal area. On a goal kick, the goalkeeper places the ball at the top of the penalty area. I tell her to move it back. Her coach smiles and laughingly says, "Come on, she's just trying to gain an unfair advantage."

Players are on the goal area line, those players are inside the penalty area. Ergo, their play is illegal. Perhaps Law5 once again forgot to add that cartoon prior to posting reply.

Or perhaps Law5 meant to write penalty area.
The players deliberately on the penalty area line, this is not permitted by law either. - Law 16 that is. For the scenario that was painted by Law5, even when those players on the penalty area line, a retaken goal kick is proper restart; unless advantage be applied if players did not contest for the ball for instance.

Either way, this is as long as the referee did not do anything to prevent such a restart, all those games in which the goal was scored had technical violations.

This is what happened on the field Sunday afternoon last week when I had flag duties and one of my best buddies was with whistling duties side opposite to the technical areaa. We understand each other pretty well, and then I saw the referee go over to the technical area midway through the first half. I inquired what was that about.

Oh that, i just told him, my whistling buddy responded, "You are now annoying my buddy here with your persistent inquiries. You either desist or leave. What is it going to be?"

Normally I wouldn't add to this but I think there may be something lost in translation. Most of us read this without issue as we all assumed this was a typo with the goal area line v. penalty area line.

Im pretty sure Law5 knows that this is a violation if they were in the penalty area or on the penalty area line. While you are technically correct that its a violation it is usually not caught by the inexperienced referees doing those matches. Hence, law5 exploiting this weakness. Why dig up something so trifling?

No, my bad. I meant to say penalty area line. Okay, they were a foot or two back of the line, waiting for the ball to cross it, at least that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I wasn't a referee at the time and I have no idea who the teenagers were that did our games in those days. Extremely unlikely that any are still whistling. Those were the days of solid white top socks and black shirts with white collars, but no Velcro on the pocket for your badge. Turf fields? Never heard of such a thing. You just hoped that the mud wasn't so deep that it came over the top of your shoes.

As a coach this past weekend in a u14 (girls 2004 age group), the ref was pretty loose in the first half and tightened up a bit near the end of the game. One of my girls got hurt on a “maybe” foul. She claims she was pulled down. From my angle, hard to tell. No call by the ref. When I came out to tend to my player, I asked why no foul.
A few minutes left in the game and we score to go up 2-1. Ref calls a foul on us about 22 yards from goal. I think it was a pretty soft call, especially if he let the play go when my girl got hurt.
I say to him “Have we met before? Did I do something wrong to you somewhere? Why don’t you like me?” I said it with a smile. He smiled back.
Kick took place. No harm. Whistle 20 seconds later. Game over.
(I realize I could have been in trouble for this. I’m sure there are some here that will say I should be tossed for that. It really was in good fun. I promise).

Oh and the game before had a female ref as a center. She called a great game. I didn’t really notice she was a woman (she had a pony tail and definitely looked like a woman). At my first sub, I called out “Sir sub!!” AR quickly corrected me. Oops.

I know this is going out on a tangent, but why do coaches feel the need to yell at referees when they have a sub? If the referee is doing their job and checking their ARs when the ball is out of play, and if ARs are doing their job and signaling for subs and making eye contact with the ref, then there is no need for a coach to yell. Personally, when coaches yell at me for a sub, it makes me not want to allow the sub. Let me do my job. I'm not trying to do your job. I'm not going to yell instructions to your players.

Sorry about that. I'll step off my soapbox now. Thank you.

You are correct. IF the CR & ARs are doing their job, there's no need to yell. I have a secret for you... not every CR & AR does their job correctly.

The last tournament I did, I told the coaches to yell for a sub. But this one, the ROC said they can sub at ANY stoppage. I'm not used to looking over my shoulder to the center line during a corner kick, IFK, or DFK after a foul. But the point is noted. I find coaches that try to verbally joystick their players tend to try to verbally joystick the referees as well.

"If the referee is doing their job and checking their ARs" When I coached that would happen about 20% of the time. I hated yelling, but sometimes you have to

I forgot about this gem from last weekend.

“Do you have an extra 2018 badge? I left mine at home.“

He watched me get my gear out and saw I had extra whistles, extra cards, extra pens, extra coins, etc. I guess he just assumed.

Not directed at either of you but in reference to your posts in general, those on this board are NOT representative of referees at large. Sure, the center should check with both AR's and the halfway line for subs at most every stoppage and the AR's should be engaged and do all they should. Reality is around a third of the referees every year are brand new and a lot of this comes with experience. Couple that with new coaches and new players and everyone is feeling their way around.

When more experienced referees see this, take the time to point it out to help teach and for goodness sake follow proper sub procedures in all games so we can teach by doing, including checking at every stoppage, eye contact with both AR's and when a coach gets a sub up late, respectfully telling them next sub opportunity and ask for their help in getting the sub up before the ball is out of play.

I will add to this that the coaches have keep their bench players away from midfield unless they want to sub. I always do games with unlimited subs, and on multiple occasions, I will hold up a restart because either I see a player standing at midfield or because my AR is signaling for a sub. Then, only to be told that they are just smartly milling about and weren't trying to sub....they have faked us both out.

After that happens two or three times in a game, I don't mind them yelling "sub, ref" to get my attention, because I am much less likely to be looking for your subs.

You mean they weren't in their clearly marked technical areas???? ;)

One HS I would do had the scorekeeper (timer) up in the booth, he must've also done the scoreboard for Basketball games because every time a ball would go out of play, he would sound the horn to indicate subs. He was pretty good though, he knew the rules well enough to not hit the horn if the visitors had subs during a home team throw in. it was actually pretty nice. He would also announce EVERY subbed player and the player he/she was replacing. He really liked his job.
