This is one of the longer dictionary definitions of desperation, but a solid one.

We really don't need to get engaged in this financial oneupmanship that the Manchester clubs are engaged in.

Even if the numbers are off by 25%...still too much.

Yeah.. like.. anything over 200k a week for him is laughable. United flushing money down the toilet. At least they'll do better than 6th place this year :ROFLMAO:

    24mm pre-tax. The 290k was net.

These figures are madness, but when compared to NBA salaries, the closest when looking at revenues from global marketing and broadcast rights, it is in line.

Meh....the money would be relevant if we were getting someone else. Considering we're not, United are doing the best business possible, while we're looking to be fighting for 3/4 CL spot. If there was a chance to get Sanchez, we should have been fighting tooth and nail for him. I understand we can't match United's money clout, but let's not kid ourselves, if we had their power, we'd be in for Sanchez as well.

    Great business from them.

Carroll apparently out with ankle injury and the end of our pursuit? Bullet dodged?

To me it makes no difference.. backup striker for the short term, not talking about anyone who would or could make this team better. At least Barkley has the potential to have a real impact.

What I find odd is the lack of creativity exhibited in some of our dealings. On one hand, finding a guy like Christiensen is a stroke of brilliance by the club. On the other, our transfer targets seem to be....meh.. they're either overly obvious/near unattainable players or the Andy Carrolls of the world.

I dread to think who might be our back to Carroll.... Cameron Jerome, Crouch?

On the other hand, Alonso and Zappacosta were creative. Neither are losing us games. Alonso has won us games. Those are two good signings that cost us very little in the scheme of things. Barkley has huge upside as his value doubles as soon as he plays a game for us.

Carroll hasn't signed yet - only rumors. So, hard to get upset over it. Except our club has a history of signing Sidwell, Ben Haim, and Papy.

    for what it's worth:

Manchester United's deal to sign Chile forward Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal will be worth £180m after he agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract. (Telegraph)

Sanchez's Manchester United contract will earn the 29-year-old more than £400,000 a week. (Independent)

Hey don't hate on Crouch I'd love to see that 6'7 lengthy ass mother ********er doing the robot in a Chelsea jersey.

But yea our targets have been uninspiring.

By their nature of falling mid-season, January signings are either uninspiring or way overpriced. And sometimes both.

The sort of player we all want is just rarely available at this time of year without a significant premium attached. Far better spend the money over the summer when everything is a little more settled.

Isn't Hazard in contract negotiations to bump it from 200 to 300, while flirting with RM at the same time to expedite it?

As for declining, Hazard is only 2 years younger. Maybe you should sell him to RM if players start declining at 29!

My first recollection of this was Ruud Gullit about 20 years ago when he started throwing out the term netto.

No, I'm pretty sure Hazard is on 200k gross. It's just when the articles say things like 'after tax' or 'net'. The standard is still gross wages in most articles from what I've seen.

Chelsea HQ twitter which usually has a pretty good pulse on things has some interesting news.

Carroll is off the table due to a hairline fracture. no official contact has been made regarding Crouch, and.....

a 65M Euro deal is being dicussed with Roma for both Palmieri and Dzeko which would be REALLY good business i think.

the extent to which Dzeko is superior to Carroll is unquantifiable.

also Bats could be used in the Roma deal to sweeten it. not sure if sale or loan. if loan it would be incredible business.

the Roma news is apparently sourced from Sky Italia by the way.

also the story seems to be that chelsea offered 50 and roma want an extra 15. which makes this a little more believable that there are valuations from both sides being talked about. so IF we can say this is true chelsea better not be stupid and get the deal done.

on the Sanchez numbers, Matt Law is breaking down that the FFP impact will be 33M per year over the contract. that's actually a LOT. Hazards is 13, Morata is 20. and usually you lower it by extending contracts. Sanchez will be 33-34 when his contract ends. meaning if they don't recoup the cost in a couple of years or reduce it by getting a good selling fee, that's a pretty huge portion. certainly it will have an impact, even if Utd are one of the top revenue clubs. so the question is, will this impact the signing of another world class attacker in the summer for them? would they need to sell Martial (example) to invest? maybe not, but it could keep them from a super star signing. not sure. maybe it opens up Griezmann for another club?

that is of course assuming we can sign players as per the just recently announced allegation against chelsea signing under 18 international youth players.

Interesting to see the breakdown. On a standalone basis, sanchez is quality and will immediately make them better.

Where I see the bigger problems are what that type of salary does for your existing player base and any future signings. It lifts the expectations across the board and the overall financial impact is compounded as a result.

If I'm pogba on 260k a week, I'm not going to sit still if sanchez picks up 450k and certainly my agent won't. DDG will also expect a more sizeable increase as well in his next round of negotiations. Moreso than if sanchez wasn't coming in. This type of move (as reported which could of course be bollox) would have a ripple effect far beyond the immediate financial impact.

Indeed... and I have two 'modes'.

You can select either option '1'

But, tbh, I usually end up more like option '2'
