Naah, she didn't start it. P5 funding and less supply did (a huge number of talented girls are now opting out of college soccer, I think it's crisis level for the sport). No football team. Private costs. Detached soccer fields. Naomi/Dempsey couldn't do anything in four years. Doesn't sell no more in a significantly tightened supply market. Who started the demise of Portland and George Mason, for example? Not one man, not one woman.
Wrong. She did start it. NM and KV are both out of their depth to be HCs. That's Loyola's problem...has nothing to do with demographics. KD has only been at Loyola for roughly year and a half; if given time to impact recruiting in 2018 and beyond, he will. At end of the day, ACs can only do so much for a HC out of their depth.
Wrong. And arrogant. Parents and kids couldn't care less about previous wins and losses and little about coaches who aren't Anson Contantine Dorrance. That stuff matters for NBA. NFL, WNBA dreams, TV exposure and stuff. Recruiting is totally about status (P5), locale, school and scholly $. Cookie-cutter coaches are just window dressing and subject to previous conditions. Especially with this turnover at non-elite levels where short supply is a crisis. Once on campus, and interacting, maybe another story but naah, even that not so much. That's more "wow, greeks have fun and I have none..." musing.

There was a great pool of Candidates, they choose the best person for the program. Wacysoccerworld...I get it when you talk about Chicago State and all the issues there. But recruiting to HPU, and UR are very similar. Marty just has to recruit better players than UR already has. Its not that hard. TOWSON- WOW....I heard a Big South HC was going to take it but the pay was not attractive enough for her to take it. Hiring Katherine Vettori is an eye opener or should I say eye closer. Been out of coaching for a while due to running Loyola into the ground, and then there were also the mention of a large number of NCAA Compliance Violations, maybe rumor, but I don't think so? Austin Peay- Wow...She did very well at her former post. I know a few coaches that were in the mix for the HC position there. She was not the most qualified DI experience wise, but she certainly has a proven she can create a winner. Has to be better than what they had? HighPoint- will open a national search. Im sure MB leaving when he did may not have left a good taste in the Admins Mouth. Im sure Current Associate HC will get a look, but they will look for the next best thing, not what Beal leaves behind. Soccer1212 & Germans4allies4- You mentioned Horne former Ghost HC at Campbell. I say ghost because NO ONE knows what happened or how it happened. I mean how do you explain the situation when he is applying for jobs? As well as the current Campbell staff? I guess he can blame it on the two coaches HE HIRED? Stu is a great guy (I hear) but he created the mess & success at Campbell. I don't see him getting a Head gig any time soon with the Campbell Ghost Situation- Why was there never a press release done. I mean NOTHING ever said? I see him as an assistant or maybe DII coach. I have nothing against Horne. I have a huge issue with how the situation was handled, or miss handled. It just seems Admin. are making bad decisions in certain jobs? That will be interesting to see if she can do it with recruiting at the DI level and playing better quality teams every game. I’m hoping this becomes a good hire to show that Coaches from other Divisions can do the DI job well but that hire is certainly rolling the dice.

He got undermined by his alum Asst who wanted the job and created the mess with the other female assistant to get it. Who's going to win that battle....two young, alternative females or one regular family guy? These days, we know that answer. Horne is getting full salary for an entire year because there was absolutely NO cause. You think a southern Baptist athletic department is going to write a release about major mishandling of this situation? The admin is at fault, not Horne.

Wrong, uh, is that from that movie with Sly? Read the only consistent national championship contenders. Coaches are next to nothing in recruiting. They send the camp invites, correspond with travel coach and hope for the best. It's all not them (as stated, school attributes). Dorrance himself said if he went to Stanford, he wouldn't have to "recruit" (i.e. be the first guy to solicit and threaten the offer has a one week shelf life). Not so in Stanford football and basketball. Me right, you wrong in denial. They don't have the budget to show up and pitch in living rooms like TV sports. Basketball and football studs are known assets, with cash impacts, ergo, the competition and selling between coaches. What is with pretending this pay to play, limited supply sport doesn't follow the concentrated money? I know it makes it boring to eliminate >90% of the schools out of hand for any national championship hope but, if only the sport would stop scaring off the supply...and relegating coaches to endless turnover and virtually no influence in recruiting...
I’m a little confused about this. According to he NCAA, no letters of intent are valid until Feb. 7, 2018. If they don’t sign again with a feb 7 signing date or later until August 1,2018, athletes can still go where they want. http://www.nationalletter.org/signingDates/future.html Unlike sports like Basketball or Football, there is no early signing period for soccer.
I am guessing the signing has nothing to do with an nli. It would be they signed scholarship paperwork. That can happen. Soccer does not have an early nli signing period.
Can’t say it’s just because she’s female but it definitely helped as they were some quality male candidates that I know applied for that position. I’m up in the air about her record at Loyola. Apart from he disastrous final year (and they were very poor that year) Katherine’s record was solid. I think the big decline came in conference play as results really slipped and that was worrisome. Hiring a coach with a solid DI coaching background I don’t believe is a bad hire but it does seem like the admin preferred to hire a female so long as they had enough experience to justify the hire. Again I don’t think it seems too bad a hire but her downward slide in conference play at Loyola may be the the worry.
That is the man who happened to be in the path of the P5 money tornado. He simply went down with the ship, as his successor(s) and colleagues at similarly, once competitive, non-P5 schools. Nothing can be done as parents don't care none about coaches, only tier, school, locale, scholly. Especially when multiple schools aren't vying for same talent as they do in TV sports, Earliest best tier, school, locale, scholly gets the verbal. It's great to google around every year and see all the non renewals of 4 and 5 year contracts signed on the heels of previous 4 or 5 year non-renewals...the beat goes on. Like coaches can change the school intangibles and lot in a new P5 money life. Do we think they're alchemists? They are almost as insignificant as public high school sports coaches (whom are as "good" as whatever players in the district). The only solution is for coaches and the NCAA to make the sport appealing (aka allow a college life) to replenish supply. Southerly/coastal P5 will still reign supreme on the money trail, of course, but it will be a more competitive game overall. These revolving four year termers will have something to at least work with to try to extend themselves.
Well, sure, but that's not why a lot of men are in their coaching positions. Every single men's D1 program coach is a man. Some of them did their licensing in the 70s (if at all), never played soccer competitively, and don't watch soccer on TV. Two of the biggest and most historically successful programs in women's college soccer have coaches on staff who did not play college soccer. Women's college soccer is littered with guys like this.
Holmes, Garret Smith is largely responsible for the downfall of the program. Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Georgetown, DePaul and others have navigated this same Power 5 era that Portland had too. So the coaches are part of the success or failure and Portland failed big time.
CX, do you consider any of them consistent national championship contenders? Georgetown couldn't stay on the field with Stanford. Depaul is toast. The Cali schools are ok (waaay better off than Portland and Depaul) because after the Pac 4, they're second-tier in a fairly dense industry money region (nowhere near the more uptight east coast where we throw buckets of cash at this sport). However, can't be considered national powers or contenders as Portland and them once were.
DePaul has had some strong seasons and qualifies for the NCAA tournament in this era. Portland has taken a nose dive year after year. Pepperdine, Georgetown, Santa Clara have been good programs. Portland is the extreme top to bottom. The coach has a lot to do with this. Stop protecting your friend.
I've got to laugh because all I can see are the reply posts. It makes reading threads so much more pleasant. As a matter of interest, as of now the Division I women's teams have 231 male and 90 female head coaches. It looks like the women are going to make a small gain this year. With the current 231 and 90 numbers, the women have 28% of the head coaching jobs (that aren't currently vacant). They coach 32% of the top 100 teams (that aren't currently vacant). They coach 50% of the top 20 teams.
Not sure why Towson would go after Vettori. If you’re going after a coach that’s been out of the college game for over 4 years then I’d say just stick with Paynter and renew his contract. It’s not like they’re making an upgrade bringing someone who’s been out of the game that long. Should have gone after after a firmer assistant in Gerseny with an offer but maybe he will be set with JMU eventually. Going to be an uphill battle for Towson to compete against Hofstra, Northeastern, Drexel, and the CAA others. But if she does a good job with local soccer-rich talent there may be a chance in time within that conference. Although I do think it’s harsh to say she didn’t do well at Loyola. Yes her last year was a train wreck. But she won two regular season titles and two conference championships plus a COY. That’s a good level of success in a 4-year span before the bottom fell out. Yes it was the MAAC before Monmouth joined, and before Loyola moved to a much stronger Patriot League with Navy, BU, and Bucknell. But not her fault the conference was weak and they did well to take advantage of that. Now that Towson is done, what does UMBC do now? Wouldn’t be surprised if there was somewhat of an overlapping candidate pool. Being a female had to have been a big plus. Looks like Miami OH, Portland, William & Mary, and Towson replaced a male with a female. Army the only one so far that replaced a female with a male. The others stayed the same gender. Anyone I may have missed?
ST, agree with a lot you say. But, about the KV tenure. She won two regular season titles and a conference title in her first two years....with rosters assembled 100% by the Malia/Byford regimes. Once they started graduating after first two years, she went to .500 overall and 5-4 in the MAAC in '10, the first season with more then 2 MAAC losses ever since program started in 1992 (and she did the same thing the next two years in '11 and '12)! By the time the Patriot League came, the wheels were off. Her first year in PL, team went 1-5-2 in non-conference and 2-11-4 overall. I'm sorry, if KV could run a top mid-major program, the conference transition wouldn't have been that tough. It's still the PL. The program went one direction under KV, a reason this CAA hire would be an all timer and really has no justification.
Let's not let any facts get in the way of a good hire at Towson! In one of those years, Loyola was hosting the Metro Conf tournament in their brand new stadium and Loyola did not even qualify for the first time in school history! Towson has Zero interest in going after a current good HC or even good AC. Budget reasons I guess and don't know how Paynter did it for 50K. I heard he lived many miles away. I said this a few posts back about KV. Found her currently doing rec soccer at Towsonrec.com (assume for her own kids sake?) Hubby is a Baltimore lawyer. "- she's female, has some resume, and she'll take it for cheap because she's already right there." Maybe she's learned a lot and good luck to the kids and hope she'll keep the ACs and everyone is happy...but who's betting on Towson contending in the CAA?? btw - UMBC will do the exact same thing. Just like Wray, someone will come out of the woodwork who is right there or it will be a real young female like the 4-5 coaches before her.
