Absolutely agree. A full (past) starting line-up should be available.... Plus three excellent freshman field players and a great keeper... And all of the super subs that we know well.

It will be a great year!

    Will Emily Fox be back?

There is no reason to believe that Emily will not be back next year. Her injury should be healed by late next summer so that she could play in the fall. But there is much we casual fans do not know. She has had he captain's arm band for the U20s ever since the U20 World Cup finished up a year ago. She is eligible to play for the U20s again next year, so how available she'll be is unknown If her injury heals in time to make the final cut.

Does Scarpa come back for another year, or do y’all think she’s done?

With regard to the question about line-ups for 2018, while there are some obvious choices for starters, the answer is that we'll have to wait and see who steps up over the spring and summer.

So with the caveat that there will be one or two surprise starters, here are some favorites to start:

Seniors: Jessie Scarpa, Julia Ashley, Dorian Bailey
    Juniors: Bridgette Andrezjewski, Zoe Redei,
Sophomores: Emily Fox, Taylor Otto, Alessia Russo, L Wubben-Moy
Freshmen: Brianna Pinto, Rachel Jones, Claudia Dickey, Rachel Dowart

13 strong starter possibilities. (With perhaps Jessie and Emily at questionable strength depending on healing progress of their ACLs) If Emily and Jessie are healthy and starting, Rachel Jones and Rachel Dowart are the likely ones that would have to work their way into the line-up.

There are other Heels that have regularly started in the past and may be available. How about Maggie Bill or Annie Kingman? And those with great potential to step up are on a list that certainly includes Madison Shultz, Alea Hiatt, and Morgan Goff. Now add in Alex Kimball, Kasey Parker, Kate Morris, Brooke Bingham, and Sydney Spruill all of whom have potential. Then also remember that we have seen below-the-radar walk-ons nail down starting positions in the past on College Cup teams.

There are role players, and Madison may yet be most effective coming off the bench to provide incredible spark and Ru Mucherera also fits that mold.

So mix and match and identify your dream line up. And then wait until next August.

My impression is that she really enjoys the team atmosphere and would likely try to come back for the fall if it made sense other wise.

If they want to play next fall they will have to have taken a redshirt this last season. Neither played in a game at all, and both were injured. (Kingman with an achillies and Kimball with a long standing injury for which she underwent surgery in the summer.)

I hope they both come back. I always thought Kingman had the potential to be one of the best 2-3 players on the team. Kimball has provided a lot of good play off the bench. Both seem like they would be good senior leaders.

Just noticed that Claudia Dickey, who I have as one of the top keeper prospects in the 2018 class, has signed with the UNC basketball team. She will also be playing for the soccer team as well. I have assumed that she will be starting on the pitch next fall. My worry would be injury if she goes straight into basketball from the soccer season with no down time.

She is ranked 40th nationally for the 2018 basketball class, and I have her as leading a pack of 4 keepers at number 11 in the 2018 soccer class. (I have midfielder Briana Pinto at #3, forward Rachel Jones as #6, midfielder Rachel Dorwart as #28, and forward Mary Elliot McCabe at #79. We will have a very strong class next fall, but Pinto and Dickey will likely miss some time at camps getting ready for the U20 World Cup CONCACAF qualifiers in early January.

Yes-- with CONCACAF & then more U20 camps thru the winter/spring and with the U20 World Cup in the month of August--the players will be very busy, but I would think players (Dickey, Pinto) would not miss too much right- in regards to the actual 2018 season-- just a couple pre-season games?
Not like the last one where they all had to redshirt-- the timing seems much better.

So is it the general consensus that Dickey will be starting over Leshnak next year?

That would be a huge mistake. Leshnak may have had a shakey tournament but is well beyond Dickey in experience and playing at the level and pace of Collegiate Soccer. Did anyone watch the game Dickey played with the u20's last week?

Sorry, no...I do think Leshnak will start...agree with glove stinks-- she's got the experience-- but I do think Dickey will give her some good competition...depending how things go --maybe both will see some playing time?

Obviously we'll have to wait and see who plays next fall.

I did not see Dickey play in the U20 friendlies. They brought 3 keepers and each played a game. Laurel Ivory (Virginia) played the first game (3-3 draw with England), Dickey got the second game (a 10-1 shellacking of Finland), and Amanda McGlynn (VaTech) got the final game, a 0-2 loss to Brazil.

Ivory was the top Keeper in last year's class. She played in the U17 world cup, and then saw time with the U19s and U20s last year. McGlynn blossomed late with mostly U18 and U19 experience and one shot at the U20s last May. She was impressive at Virginia Tech. Last summer Dickey played the two critical games against Japan and China at the U19 tournament in China (where they won the tournament), and she is seeing U20 experience earlier than either of these two other keepers, and my point would be that if they started their freshman years, there is no reason she could not do the same. But as I said above, we obviously will have to wait and see.

Another topic..... Went by Fetzer on Friday to check out progress.... depressing. I will be absolutely amazed if the soccer teams are playing on that pitch in the fall.

I initially went by in July to see how things were going. At that time they had completely cleaned out the field and track leaving a field of dirt from the bottom of the stands to the other side and from the gate at the west end up pretty close to the current field house. They had also removed all of the aluminum bleacher benches from the concrete stands.

5 months later nothing has progressed. Except for the fact that the large dirt field is now the staging ground for building the huge indoor football practice field next door. The field is full of large sections of concrete pipes of different sizes (some 12 feet in diameter), piles of cement blocks, heavy machinery of all sorts, some kind of mixing structure that trucks can drive under to be loaded, and piles of miscellaneous materials, construction trailers, and whatever. The focus is clearly on getting the football building done first.

Backing up the time line, I would think that they would want to get the grass in place by May or June at the very latest so that it has a few months to mature and set roots before the onslaught of soccer cleats. Will the equipment and construction materials have found another place by March or April so as to start putting in the drainage and irrigation system, doing the grading, importing the proper sandy base for the top soil or pre-grown grass plugs? That's only three months away. Good luck.

But the big issue is the planned soccer building at the south end of which there is no sign at this time (just dirt with huge machines parked on it. When are they going to find time to build a complex building with offices, conference rooms, film rooms, weight rooms, small sided practice space, dressing rooms, and all of the ice bath, hot tubs, and physical therapy rooms and all of the other goodies that were in the drawings we saw a year ago? This is not to mention the building of the south and west stands and refurbing the east stands and building the promised concession stand, etc.

I had thought that what appeared to be a 14.5 month window from mid May 2017 until August 2018 was going to be very tight, and mow it appears that they did minimal work for about a month and a half (mid may to the end of June) and have wasted almost 6 months since, by allowing Fetzer to be a staging ground. (And there is much more open space on the other side of the gargantuan football building that could be used for staging.... but I suppose that football is simply taking precedence over soccer and the soccer teams and fans simply have to like it or lump it.)

I see another season at Cary happening. I HOPE I am wrong.

Anybody in a position to get some real answers?

The new stadium and facilities will be great. With all of UNC's soccer tradition, this has been a long time coming.

But after my visit the other day, in my mind's eye I see Anson and men's coach Carlos Somoano alternately biting their nails worrying that the stadium will not be ready next season and calling the AD to try to convince him that the soccer programs are just as important as the football program and the soccer construction needs to come out of idle and at least get into first gear!

As a parent who went through this process, I can vouch that it was never easy and you tend to want to get things lined up early, but that is crazy.

If she actually takes an interest in school, she could still end up at Stanford right? The forward who was one of Stanford's best players as a freshmen was originally committed to Cal for years first. The likelihood of anyone not on the national team in any version of womens soccer making 100K a year in the next 10 years seems slim to none - am I wrong?

Did UNC announce the signing or was it the player and or the family? There are many instances where a kid says "I am committing to play at XYZ University" when there is no scholarship money and the coach has just said, "sure, you can come try out". Hard to imagine UNC allocating scholarship money for an 11-year old kid. But...the times they are a changin'.
