Regardless of whether it's stupid, it is something that was chanted at him in the past. Also "Sacha lost the Olympics", I think someone even had a two pole of him jumping as the freekick that knocked us out in the stoppage time went under his feet.

I am pretty happy with this signing. I watched his europa league match last week when we were linked with him, and talked to some supporters, and his game seems suited for the MLS. Very athletic guy and in his mid 20s. Exactly what we need.

I'm torn on Robin Van Persie. He has had some injury troubles this year, but he is still a very good striker, and I think he'd do well in the MLS if he can stay fit. Plus I assume we will somehow get him on a non-DP contract which makes this gamble a little better.

Basically I am fine with him coming as long as he isn't a DP, and I am fine with us passing on him.

Ok, time to end this conversation. Besides being off-topic, it's sorta silly. Carli Lloyd is also a girl's name and she could kick all our butt's on the soccer field, so I don't know why complimenting Sacha like that would upset him.

But regardless, feel free to take the discussion to PM's if you desire to keep it going, but no more here. Thank you.

I haven't seen him play in years. I guess the question is -- if he stays healthy, could we find a better forward at a non-DP salary? Or rather, would our team do the serious scouting necessary to find a better forward at a non-DP salary?

RVP could be a Keane-type signing. He has been a G every 2 match level striker for a EL Turkish side and got a recall to Holland for a WCQ. He can still put the ball in the back of the net if he is healthy.

LA needs someone who can score and RVP is a striker and especially good with his head, something LA sorely lacks.

He would be a steal at max TAM ($1.5MM).

But how long can he be healthy for? I do agree, he might be perfect for the league.

That maybe because you have had fewer chances to watch him play. This season he has been mainly hurt while his playing time diminished for the prior 2 years he has been with Fenerbache.

Van Persie was injury prone at Arsenal, but when he left for Manchester United, he seemed to stay healthy for the majority of his time there. Its possible the medical staff at United had a specific regime for him so he didn't aggravate previous injuries.

If we could get him on a JJ level TAM contract, I think we should do it. I'm not sure id risk a huge chunk of TAM on someone who is at "high" risk to miss a huge chunk of games.

IF he stays healthy he could be a 20 goal a season striker if we somehow manage to put a decent team together.

Yes, I remember reading that he was a left back who was converted to CB a season or two ago and has had good success there.

That is what we were expecting. He has been playing center back this past season, and seems to be much better in that spot.

Glad to have him on board!

I would compare RVP to Keane who was almost 33 when he got to LA, had done very little for the prior 3 years in the EPL and then proceeded to light up MLS.

Van Persie had 24 goals in 55 matches (34 starts) in the last 2 seasons in the fast paced, very physical SuperLiga playing for a UCL-level team.

If his ACL checks out he is the type of striker even at 34 that could provide 20+ Gs in 30 starts. MLS defending is nowhere near even SuperLiga defending. RVP would feast.

I would sign him at a number above Romain and get rid of Gio if possible.

It's a myth (not directed at you, a lot of people have said this) that Keane wasn't doing well in EPL before coming to us. It is true that he had fallen out of favor at Tottenham and was loaned out part of the time. But overall in the three years prior to joining the Galaxy (2008-2011) Keane scored 40 goals in 109 appearances (.37g/gm) which is a top notch goal/gm ratio. Even if you leave out his scoring while on his 2010 loan to Celtic (12 goals in 16 games) he still has a very good 28 goals in 93 EPL games (.30g/gm). He also did this despite coming off the bench part of the time which makes it even more impressive. So I would not describe this as doing very little.

Our signing him was a bit lucky, a matter of being in the right place at the right time. We approached him at the moment he was unhappy about how he was being treated by Tottenham and he made a very quick decision to jump to MLS. A great haul for us. Our previous regime was more proactive in finding these disgruntled gems (Beckham and Keane.)

Getting rid of Gio, while ideal, is not realistic.

I'm not sure I'd give someone with RVPs injury history and age a DP slot.

There are still plenty of players who are unhappy in the prem.

Sturridge, Toure, and Hernandez come to mind. All would be good signings in the MLS.

He was pretty healthy the first year, but had a few more challenges the next couple of years.

Under Moyes as I recall, he missed some chunks and played at less than 100% for a few spells.

Still, if he comes in under TAM and doesn't take a DP spot, I think he's worth a punt.

We have a semantic difference, that's all. Not a big deal.

I believe that a top level striker should produce a minimum of 1 goal every 2 matches or 0.5G per. I would classify 0.3 or < 1 G per 3 matches as doing very little / Gio level.

As a counterweight, Giovinco had a measly 0.16 goals per game in the three season prior to joining Toronto. Stats are informative, but not definitive, Keane was in the doghouse with Redknapp and only given garbage minutes during his last season and a half with Tottenham with Harry actively trying to offload him at every turn. Tottenham were also overburdened with strikers at the time, Crouch, Defoe, Pavlyuchenko and Van Der Vaart not to mention 2010 was Gareth Bale’s breakout season. Keane was a striker who would have started for 13 or 14 of EPL teams the year he signed for the Galaxy.

Keane was 31 when we signed him. He turned 32 during the 2012 championship season.

RvP is better than Keane, but was pretty injury-prone even during his prime. There's the risk of him coming back out of form coupled with the risk that he suffers a long-term injury.
