So basically we know how stupid it was to give Ciani that contract and we know literally no other MLS team is as stupid as us and will take Ciani from us.
It's sobering, isn't it? What's more, the Galaxy know it, too. And it happened after Sigi was in charge.
Lassiter is not worth the pick relative to other options. LAFC could probably trade for him in exchange for the equivalent of a bag of soccer balls. They are better off using one of their five picks elsewhere On players that might actually eat up minutes during the season.
I would love somebody from the front office to explain to me what the rush was in signing Ciani. The season was already lost, and not sure why they didn’t just wait till the offseason. I hold out hope that with an off-season and in better shape that he might be a decent player. But it is hard to imagine him justifying that contract.
It was probably down to the injury crisis we were having, but I agree with your post. We should have waited on Ciani especially with those wages. The season was over, so it made no sense to make a panic signing. Now we are stuck with a terrible contract. We have to hope Ciani can turn into a decent MLS defender.
Seattle didn't protect osvaldo alonso. I know he had injury troubles last season, but before then he has been pretty consistently playing 30+ matches a season. Downside is his wages are pretty high and he just turned 32. We desperately need a DM, and one of the best in the league is available. Honestly we'd be pretty stupid not to at least give Alonso a try. Also Sigi was his manager for years, and that was when Alonso was at his best. I think this could work for us. We can probably trade for Alonso quite easily, or make a deal with LAFC.
Apparently Alonso is on $1.1 million a year. We might be able to give him Jones old salary and with the new TAM, we'd be in good shape.
Will LA can spend $4MM to $5.2MM of TAM this season and Klein says he will be aggressive. Lets see what happens. According to head coach Sigi Schmid, the team is already at work utilizing the TAM increase— as well as the other resources available to them – with preseason a little over a month away. “We just need to hire a mathematician to deal with all the permutations,” Schmid said. https://www.lagalaxy.com/post/2017/...-use-new-tam-investment-2018-says-chris-klein
Why would the honey badger who is the heart and soul of Seattle, a team that floundered in MLS cup without his leadership and impact in the center of the park take a pay cut to come to a terrible LA team?
He is not wanted at Seattle, and his former coach who helped make his career is in need of a defensive midfielder.
You seem to be assuming a lot. First, I seem to recall the Galaxy not protecting highly compensated players taking the gamble that their high salary would make them less desirable to the club(s) drafting given their limited number of picks. Alonzo is a DP without a no trade clause so if LAFC select him they will either need to use their remaining DP slot or much more likely buy his contract down with TAM. While LAFC has probably more TAM and GAM then the Galaxy that still might not be their best use of funds if they follow the Atlanta model. Second, even though their GM tried to trade him in the past, I have not heard that he is no longer wanted at Seattle. DMs in general have a longer life then wings or forwards and the MLS Cup showed that they don't have a adequate replacement currently on the squad. About the only reason I can see them wanting to get rid of him is if they want to bring in a high priced forward to eventually replace Clint who will be 35 in March. Finally, do you really think that Seattle will just give him up to the Galaxy without compensation?
If anyone even remotely involved with player acquisition thinks it's a good thing Ciani us coming back after watching his performances last season then we have a problem that is simply not solvable without a complete purge of the FO
Correct me if I am wrong. I will admit that the intricacies of MLS escapes me. That is just the expansion draft list right? I don't believe that Seattle is trying to get rid of Alonso. They are likely count on the fact that LAFC will not select him given his value (price tag/age/injury status/club loyalty).
I'm not sure he wants to be in seattle, nor would they take him back... pic.twitter.com/a79TqGupWc— Osvaldo Alonso (@OzzieAlonso) December 11, 2017
Wouldn't it be nice if we were signing a starting RB, like NYCFC.... Anton Tinnerholm http://sbisoccer.com/2017/12/nycfc-to-sign-swedens-top-tier-defender-of-the-year
Given where we are, I don't think Alonso fits. Old veterans that we can use for depth for a year are fine, but he doesn't solve the long-run problem. I just don't see us being that good next year so I'm not willing to sacrifice anything to make us better for just next year.
Yes just the expansion draft. We don't get to just grab him. LAFC can do that if they want, but seattle not protecting Alonso means they are willing to lose him. Hence why I think we can likely trade for him pretty easily.
Darlington Nagbe rumored to be following Porter out the door in Portland, with Atlanta the top suitor. https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017...hopping-star-darlington-nagbe-atlanta-running
Expansion drafts both in MLS and other leagues are littered with calculated risks on players they really want to keep but guess (sometimes incorrectly) that the other team won't grab them for reasons x or y. A good example is Houston not protecting Brian Ching, Montreal grabbing him and Houston subsequently having to trade for him back. Him not being protected isn't meaningless but I think you're looking too much into it.
