Don't know what you used to recognize players but Hector Moreno has done more than some of the players you mentioned (def. than Omar Gonzalez).

I used my own memory! I do not know every single player ever played the game. If I don't know that player, it is my problem.

Before the Europa League final that will be played tonight, Paul Pogba has 55 matches and 5 goals in European football. These stats are the same as those of Paul Le Guen.

Incredible but true, Mario Mandzukic and David Villa have the same stats in European Cups : 77 matches/ 27 goals.
And Krasimir Balakov has the same numbers as Ilie Balaci : 38/ 7.

I'm quite certain this is true.
With Russia having 'inherited' the footballing history of the former Soviet Union, the recent international friendly between Chile and Russia (1-1) on June 8 was the first time the two countries met since that infamous 1973 World Cup qualifier in Santiago when the Soviets were a no-show for political reasons. 44 years later.

Very brief trivia in the newspaper:

In 2000 at the European Championships the men's of Germany achieved their worst result in 32 years on Dutch (and the preceding two games on Belgian) soil.

In 2017 at the European Championships the women's team of Germany achieved their worst result in 22 years on Dutch soil.

(will not increase the chance to host another tournament in the future; corrupt sports politicians don't forget this)

It got me thinking after writing about the USA in the 1990.WC Finals. Who is the last real amateur player to have played in the WC Finals? When I mentioned "real" amateur player, I am excluding players from the former Warsaw Pact who played for their clubs with "amateur" status. Claudio Reyna at USA 1994?

Above is a photo taken in 1964 as Schalke run onto the pitch for an Inter-Toto Cup match in Sweden.

Second from left is goalkeeper Horst Mühlmann, who played with the club from 1962-1966.

Following 1968 when he played for the Kansas City Spurs of the NASL Mühlmann was lured by the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals where he established himself as a popular and successful field goal kicker from 1969-1974. He finished his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1977.

Francis Foda is the current manager of Austria. As a player, he was capped twice. His first ever match was against Brazil. In Portuguese, "Foda" is translated as.... please use google translate yourself. :)

Franco Foda is of Italian origin. I wonder how he could have a name like that, with his family coming from Italy, that has a rude meaning in latin languages.

England's 2001 World Cup Qualifier against Greece was remembered for Beckham's 93rd minute freekick that sent England to the top of the table and directly to the WC Finals. It was the defining moment of Beckham's career.

The game was actually Otto Rehhagel's second game in charge of Greece. His first game was a 5-1 loss against Finland. People forget that the game was actually a 2-2 draw against an unfancied Greece. Greece was moments away from pulling a big upset against England, a team that beat Germany 5-1 in Germany. The game was Beckham's moment, but it was also a preview of what Rehhage could do in Euro 2004.

People also forget that England were able to finish top of the group because Germany could only draw in Gelsenkirchen against an unfancied Finland 0-0. If Germany had won, Beckham's equalizer would have meant nothing.
As it was, Germany had to go through a playoff to qualify and would go on to reach the final where they lost in their first ever World Cup meeting against Brazil.

At World Cup 1978, Brazil was tied against Sweden 1-1, in the last minute a corner kick was given to Brazil, whom scored by a Oscar's header, with that second goal Brazil would be placed in the Second Round vs Italy, W.Germany and Netherlands, meanwhile Austria would face Argentina, Poland and Peru.

But, the goal was disallowed, because the referee made the final whistle with the ball in the air, before it crossed the goal line.

A couple of days before the match against Bulgaria ay WC 1970, Perú suffered a terrible tragedy with an earthquake with 70,000 people killed.

The NT played with a black armband and were losing the match after the first half. In the locker room, players looked sad and worried, then one of the sporting director entered bringing a handful of earth.

Hey guys! I have in my hands, earth from Perú, remember our countrymen that are suffering with the disaster and give them a bit of happiness.

For the second half, peruvian players looked like lions and could turn the scoreboard.

Probably nitpicking on my part but they actually wore black ribbons on their sleeves.

But it leads to an interesting question: Was this the first time a team paid tribute to the perished in the form of wearing something black on their arms?
And who and when was the first to wear an actual black armband?

Norberto Conde has the record of being the player with less playing time at Copa America. He replaced Labruna at 79' and changed by Labruna 1' later in the Copa America 1955.

Conde entered the field with Argentina thrashing 5-1 to Uruguay with a great football exhibition, then Conde stayed close to Matías González, Maracana's hero some years before, and asked him: "Hey man, what's the score here". Gonzalez in response, hit the argentinian, getting him KO, and was retired unconscious in a stretcher. Gonzalez was sent-off and Labruna re-entered the field, one minute after was subbed.

East Germany only needed to draw against Austria to qualify for the WC Finals in 1990. Their players were not so bad for East German standards. Matthias Sammer, Ulf Kirsten and Andreas Thom would later become well-known players playing for Germany. Let's say in 1989.... I would not have imagined that a East German would become European Player of the Year.

However, a week before the game, Berlin Wall fell. The East German players were not at their best mentally. Austria won 3-nil at home.

About 7 years ago, my part of the world made some headline in the football world. Festus Baise, a foreign player from Nigeria/Ghana scored an own goal in the HK league that went viral. In the video below, Festus talked about the goal. "It's bad, but I need to improve, not to think of my mistake." The rest of the footage was in Cantonese.... you could understand that Daily Telegraph, the Sun etc in the UK voted as the best goal of whatever. His manager defended him, etc.

I used to joke that it was the only time where Hong Kong football got mention outside of Hong Kong.

So what happened to Festus Baise since 2010? First, Festus started off as a low level player from Nigeria/Ghana. He must have been earning very little money. He worked his way from very low level in Hong Kong to become a top player the top division there. When he scored his own goal in 2011, he was not that well-known in Hong Kong. However, in 2015, he became naturalised footballer for the HK team. In 2016, he joined Guizhou Hengfeng F.C. in China. Within a season, the club gained promotion from the second division to the Chinese Super League in 2017 with Fetus actually becoming their captain. That offseason, the Chinese Super League explored with Tevez, Oscar, Hulk, Witsel, etc joining the league. Suddenly, Fetus was playing in a league full of famous players. He remained as his club captain as his club finished 8th.

Let's say the Chinese was not exactly the most political correct people in the world. I found it very amazing that a Chinese club would give its captain armband to a player with no experience playing big time football outside of China. His name isn't Tevez, Oscar, Hulk, Witsel, etc . And on top of that, he did not come from Brazil or Argentina.

Jose Pekerman is now 12 years undefeated against European teams. Will the streak end at the WC?

His last 90 minute loss was in 2006 vs. Croatia in a pre-WC friendly (unless you count the Argentina-Germany QF defined through a PK shootout as a loss, which was also in 2006)

    w/ Argentina
    - 6-0 vs. Serbia & Montenegro
    - 0-0 vs. Holland
    - 1-1 vs. Germany

    w/ Colombia
    - 2-0 vs Belgium
    - 0-0 vs. Holland
    - 1-0 vs. Slovenia
    - 1-0 vs. Serbia
    - 3-0 vs. Greece
    - 2-2 vs. Spain
    - 3-2 vs. France

This might be well-known to British fans. In my research for my blog, I discovered that Bobby Robson, Brian Clough, Don Revie and Bob Paisley came from North East England.

So I googled "Greatest British Managers of all-time".

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ls-10-greatest-managers-British-football.html

Out of the top 20 managers of all-time, almost all of them came from the North. Only two foreigners(Mourinho and Wenger), Sir Ramsey, Graham Taylor, Herbert Chapman, Martin O'Neill and Dario Garbi are not from the North.

Sir Alex Ferguson, Bob Shankly, Jock Stein, Kenny Dalglish and Matt Busby came from Scotland. North East England shares the border with Scotland. Bill Nicholson came from Yorkshire and the Humber, which is next to North East England. Ron Greenwood came from the North West England. Howard Kendall also came from North East. Steve Coppell is from Liverpool. Is that considered North?

Jack Charlton who is not on the top 20 also has a successful career coaching the Republic of Ireland.

Blaise Diagne was the first black African elected to the French Chamber of Deputies, and the first to hold a position in the French government. He fought for the rights of French Africans as french citizens and supported French Africans to become more French, He recruited Africans to fight for France in World War One.

Senegal's new international airport, Blaise Diagne International Airport outside of Dakar was named after him.

His son Raoul Diagne became the first Black player to be capped by France. Blaise disapproved of his son's occupation, but considered Raoul's public position would give French Africans more acceptance in France.

He earned 18 caps between 1931 and 1940. He played for France at the 1938 World Cup Finals. He later became the first manager of Senegal's national team. He is considered to be the grandfather of Senegal football.
