Making Dutch academies EPL raid proof

  1. This is another example of Dutch academy players (this time about A Brasilian youth player nicked from PSV) leaving for the EPL, but getting too little opportunities:
    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...s-andreas-pereira-loan-valencia-a7936451.html
Jose Mourinho questions Andreas Pereira's decision to leave Manchester United on loan for Valencia
The United manager thinks he youngster should have stayed at Old Trafford to fight for his place in the club's first-team squad, rather than leave for another loan spell away

"Pereira, signed as a youth player from PSV Eindhoven five years ago, has yet to start a league game for United but is so highly regarded that he was handed a new, long-term deal by Mourinho this summer, just as he decided to move elsewhere."

  2. In this article BVB youngster Pulisic talks about his adventure:
    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...states-mens-national-team-usmnt-a8065076.html

This part should be on every wall in our academies loccker rooms:
"Youngsters the world over have noticed how Dortmund have turned Pulisic from a gifted 16-year-old into a decisive top player already. That is why Jadon Sancho turned down a £30,000 per week contract at Manchester City – the most money ever offered to a 17-year-old – to come here. Or why Alexander Isak, the 18-year-old Swedish striker, made the surprising decision to say no to Real Madrid to join Dortmund this summer. He did not want to be the next Martin Odegaard, he wanted to be the next Christian Pulisic."

^^Dutch teams would be in the same position as Dortmund if the Eredivisie was tougher and had all the CL spots the Bundesliga has. Even so Dortmund have trouble keeping players as Bayern and others poach their top one.

Is there a realistic idea that would have a bigger impact, including but not limited to making academies more raid-proof, than this:

SMH at Van Praag. Seriously he was the one in charge of the FIFA group tasked with cross-border leagues and he also spearheaded the women's BeNe League. No wonder an evaluation was never released. I doubt it was a lack of transparancy, the guy just can't be arsed.

Interviewed by FOX. When the Murdoch deal was made + the Eredivisie's top-heavy distribution of TV money (which is even exceptionally inequitable compared to Spain and Italy, let alone compared to England, Germany, Belgium and France) ... I recall that was also the last time (greedy) clubs in Holland were interested in the BeNe League. As is tradition, only when the rich clubs like to gouge the poorer Eredivisie clubs will the BeNe League be on the agenda (IIRC in 2005 the Atlantic League was also on it). TBH Venlo have expressed their disgust at the greed of the richer clubs (claiming their fate in a BeNe League, which they'd struggle to ever get into, wouldn't be worse than the status quo/being held ransom by the top Eredivisie clubs).

Even though the FOX deal is an unusual one (14 years instead of 3 like in respectable leagues) Murdoch saved quite a few clubs (and prevented even more inequity regarding TV rights) ... the deal was made back when lots of clubs were threatened with bankruptcy .. because the Eredivisie was the only league in the world where clubs didn't generate revenue from their TV rights but instead had to pay to broadcast their games ... who knows, maybe Murdoch miscalculated but you'd expect a Faustian deal from someone like him. Was Van Praag also involved in the Eredivisie Live debacle? If so he isn't only indifferent but also incompetent. Anyway, as 14 years is a very long time it's no surprise the BeNe League hasn't been talked about in the KNVB.

PS Andreas was born + grew up in Belgium and he's quite the opportunist. In 2015 he switched from Belgium's to Brazil's youth teams and performed well for them at the U20 World Cup. Back when he played for Belgium Bakkali (also a former PSV talent) was one of his teammates. Now his dad claims he's open for a call from the Belgian FA.

  8. This whole story is a carbon copy of the Yank Erik Palmer-Brown soap. Exactly the same bullshit was told about that transfer. That Yank too was shown a path that would lead to ManCity 1st team play, that included loans to PSV. A lot of bulshit was written by self announced insider info fans that attacked me when I just by going with plain common sense told them that it was unimaginable what was being projected. One bloke even waved with his direct contact with the player and his entourage to state with certainty things I proclaimed as wishful thinking. In the end I was right and he ended up in a last resort transfer in Belgium in a 10 placed team. So much for that claimed development path.
This Sandler bloke and Raiola should check their brains and wonder what top club is going to pay for a player's loan and invest in him to develop while the profit ends up in CityFootball Group. As management of a club you must be high on lsd or such stuff to go along with that. If a player needs development he clearly isnot the player you need to hire, as you ony do that to plug a hole in your team. Someone needing development isnot plugging holes in your team and bleeding money from your treasury chest.

    30 jan. 2018 in SPORT

Probably with a nice filled bank account, but with a developmental deficit after shit loan in England in League One.
So what could have been if he stayed at Feyenoord and probably would have been considered for the defensive midfield spot.
He's now back without any experience and proof of capability and has to start from scratch. But can he make up for the wasted developmental time?
In other words was the grabbing of the easy money at the cost of much higher contracts in the future.

^^UEFA need to take a stand against all these loan players. Maybe once a player turns 20 years he becomes a free agent if he cannot make the top team. Clubs should be able to have a certain number of players under first team contract (is 30 a good number? Should it be less?). this will prevent clubs from stockpiling young players and also give the players the chance to get a real contract where they can play rather than being strung along for a couple of more years and then discarded.

    Begeleiding is cruciaal

    Date: 5 February 2019

Introduction: Young football players who travel to England endanger their further career. This is shown by research from the University of Antwerp and Stirr Associates.

Young football players who travel to England before making their debut in their own national competition endanger their further career. This is evident from a survey of just over eighty talented Belgian youth footballers from the past fourteen years, conducted by the University of Antwerp and Stirr Associates, the management office of former professional football player Stijn Francis. Although young people and their families are tempted in the short term with high sums of money, this often means lesser performance and lower wages in the long term.

Researchers Laurenz Van Looveren from Stirr Associates and Matteo Balliauw and Sunčica Vujić, associated with UAntwerp, collected data from 83 of the most talented Belgian footballers in the past fourteen years. Among others Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, the brothers Lukaku and Hazard, Toby Alderweireld, Youri Tielemans, Charly Mussonda Jr., Matthias Bossaerts, Jason Denayer and Dedryck Boyata were studied when they were between 15 and 23 years old. Even for that group of talented players, a transfer at a young age to the Premier League is not without danger.

"Many people think that the most talented players will make it abroad anyway, but nothing is less true," says Matteo Balliauw, researcher at UAntwerpen.

    Lower market value

The numbers do not lie. Players who completed their training in England generally have a lower market value, and consequently a lower wage in the first years of their career. Moreover, the performance indicators of the Dutch football data company SciSports show that these players are often poorer in their performance at this crucial stage in their development.

The study shows that the enormous competition within the English teams plays an important role. Youth players are given too few opportunities to gain experience in the first team. Now let this be necessary in the development of the same young people.

Other reasons for the negative impact of a transfer to the Premier League on youth players that the study cites are the changes to another language and the distance to home. Friends and family, who support young people at difficult times, are then no longer in the neighborhood. Stories like those of young, lonely and homesick-infested top talents are not unique in youth football. The often fragile and influenceable youngsters are already there alone, which is less true for players who stay closer to home, for example in the Netherlands or France.

Belgian youth players, cheap and interesting investments for English clubs

Why are our young Belgian players so popular with English clubs? In England, clubs are required to have a minimum number of their own trained youth players in the core. That is why they are looking for the best international youth players for their academies. "Belgian youth players under the age of 16 are a cheap investment for top English clubs, because at this age they are often not yet contracted at their Belgian club. As a result, no expensive transfer fees have to be paid. The legislator already responded to this by lowering the minimum age to sign a professional contract to 15 years ", says Stijn Francis, who, together with Stirr Associates, represents the interests of Dries Mertens and Toby Alderweireld.

"When a youth player is not yet under contract, only a training allowance must be paid, but these are peanuts compared to the budgets of English clubs and the future transfer fee when a youth player breaks through. In this way, the clubs can easily earn back the investment, even if only a few players make it to a first team, "says his colleague and researcher Laurenz Van Looveren.

An important explanation for the attractiveness of Belgian players for foreign clubs should also be sought with our Red Devils. Under the impetus of the recent successes of the national team, Belgian youth players have become even more attractive for English clubs.
    It is not better abroad

Independent research by CIES, a sports study center in Switzerland, shows that the Belgian and Dutch academies belong to the European top. For example, the youth academies of Standard and Ajax are rated higher than those of, say, Manchester City and Chelsea. Therefore, according to Francis, it is better for the players to finish their training in their familiar environment and to gain experience in their own competition. "Young talents can gather more minutes of play in the Belgian competition compared to other countries. Sufficient minutes of play in a first team are necessary for every talent to grow in a career. Only after having gained the necessary experience in the Belgian first class are the players ready to go to the strongest leagues abroad. "In this way they can enforce and perform at the highest level of football according to the example of our Red Devils playing chances", adds Van Looveren.

    Guidance is crucial

It is important that players are well-guided and do not opt for direct money. A counselor who acts in the interest of the player can, in consultation with the parents, help to discuss and weigh offers from clubs. The sporting plan is the most important, with a view of playing minutes in the main force of a club.

"If the players can gain experience and learn from the best players in strong clubs and in the national team, they can develop on a sporting level," says Balliauw. "The amounts that players and their families will have to refuse in the short term will be amply compensated in the rest of the career between 23 and 33 years. Then experienced professional soccer players are at the maximum of their earning potential, and they will be able to earn much higher wages. "
