The German-born Costly, a '95, has an American father, the club confirms. He's a defender on their U23s who joined from Rotenburger SV: https://www.mainz05.de/nachwuchs/u23/mannschaft/ His T'Markt pages suggests this is his first "big" club. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marcel-costly/profil/spieler/274274 He seems to be a wingback who is playing regularly for them (T'markt says RB but an old article I found says LB) and has a couple assists already this season. http://www.allgemeine-zeitung.de/sp...cel-costly-bleibt-den-05ern-treu_16747479.htm I believe FSVM2 was relegated to the fourth division for this season. (The first team is, of course, in the first.)
His name comes up a few times in this report from last month but the translation doesn't really come across that clearly in Google. http://www.allgemeine-zeitung.de/sp...ein-hoher-preis-fuer-drei-punkte_18138235.htm
FuPa has Costly as starting and playing all 17 matches so far this season, scoring 3 goals along the way. Not bad. Does he deserve an Olympic call-up? https://www.fupa.net/spieler/marcel-costly-292098.html
Ah. Yup. Didn't check his birthday... Transfermarkt has him with 1 goal and 7 assists so far this season, which obviously differs from FuPa. But both point to him being a pretty decent player. I wonder how close he is to a first team look. https://www.transfermarkt.com/marcel-costly/leistungsdaten/spieler/274274
Marcel is a German Born/Dual who has been playing for Mainz II in Germany's Regionalliga Sudwest, for the past few years. He was moved from the II squad to the senior's by Mainz, but never got to play in Bundesliga. On January 2nd 2018, he transferred to FC Magdeburg the current leaders of Germany's 3Liga - Marcel's contract is through 2020 Here is Marcel's Transfermarkt bio https://www.transfermarkt.com/marcel-costly/profil/spieler/274274

Hey @dark knight or @bungadiri, can we please merge this thread with this... https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/marcel-costly-at-fsv-mainz.2070115/ ... which has some information on the player?

Btw, i think this was one of the many of the youth mainz kids that had American sounding names like 7 or 8 years back (including the parker brothers). The other one i remember was Aaron Seydel (but no discovered american ties as of yet)
Costly joined Mainz in mid-2014, so I doubt it. In any case, I'm (off the top of my head) unfamiliar with any mentions of him here (or elsewhere) in a U.S. context before this and the Detective Work thread. Of course, I'm happy to be shown wrong. Seydel, by the way, was recently called into the German U21s -- from a B2 club. While they are obviously geared toward UEFA competitions we don't really have equivalents for, it still seems noteworthy that there's an ongoing investment in young players outside the FIFA tournament schedule and, for that matter, first-division teams. Perhaps we, or CONCACAF, could attempt something similar.
is currently starting today's match and provided an assist as it's 1-0. has done well in 4th division, seems to be doing very well in 3rd Liga. Now all that's left is to see him do well in 2BL....
Magdeburg won 2-1 away to Wehen Wiesbaden and now have a 8 point over them with a game in hand for the second automatic promotion spot. Costly went 85 minutes.
here's his assist since it wasn't posted. Solid cross, he seems to be doing really well at Magdeburg.
