I found Trinidad a pretty dull place but did enjoy killing a few days on the beach on the north side of the island. The drive there is pretty uhhh interesting lol

Nothing super cool just that the road is really one lane going through assorted villages so everytime you see a car one of you has to pull over and then edge past edge other pretty much inches from the other car. Plus it's threw the mountains so the road is winding. So it's like 20 km but took like an hour.

    Let's break it down:

    Hyatt Regency: $169
    2 Drink Tickets: $10
    Transportation: $20
    Game Ticket: $30
    AO Party: $20

    Actual costs: $249
    American Outlaw Hooker Fund: $230

I hate how AO takes advantage of the fanbase.

For $230 you are getting some quality hookers.

AO travel packages aren't claiming to be cheaper then cherry picking a la carte.

And to be nitpicky...without hitchhiking or city bus, not sure how $20 covers your to/from airport and to/from the game. And add about 80 bucks in hotel taxes... but I hear ya..sort of.

Personally I don't ever use their travel packages but not sure I get the hate on their organized trips. I applaud any away US travel and the more people that go the better, IMO.

After last nights game I'm a bit sensitive right now. :)

I got $64 in taxes just be a dick. Also taxis in Trinidad are pretty expensive. It's like $30 one way from the airport to town. That's the main reason we rented a car.

I'm over complaining about AO travel packages but I still like comparing them just out of interest

The public bus from Piarco Airport to the bus station in Port of Spain is TTD 4.00, about $0.60. However, it has limited hours (6:30 AM to 8:15 PM approx) only M to F. http://www.tntairports.com/piarco/taxi.html

I used it in 2015 and will again next month. I know a cheap guesthouse at Victoria Square within walking distance from the bus station and the stadium. I can't remember the exact rate, in the $20 to $25 range, awaiting the reminding information from the proprietor.

In 2008, the direct public bus ran like once or twice a day, so we took a route taxi to the main road and a slow public bus the rest of the way. For our early morning departure, the bus driver made a special stop for us so we could hook up with the route taxi to the airport.

T&T is one of my favorite away locations. People are friendly, a multicultural population that seemingly gets along, even thrives, with each other. Plus great, cheap vegetarian street food--doubles--and cold tropical juice drinks.

you can walk to the stadium in 25 minutes plus would probably stop at a bar along the way for some beer . Have people staying in the same hotel for $159 a night

My point was that I don't get the hate on travel packages, and they aren't claiming to be a la carte cheaper. I personally don't choose the package but some people do.

(and for fun, the $159/night doesn't include the $35/night taxes.)

Not sure why I'm defending AO's travel packages.... :)

Well we all go through that phase. Look at AO package. OMFG WTF bro? Complain. Look at next package. Jesus aged mohmmamed mother and Jospeh. Complain. Look at third, forth, fifth, sixth package and meh.

At this point I just get a laugh out of their occasional bad planning. Like staying in Montego Bay or Jack and not leaving enough time to get to the stadium. Or the charter flight fiasco. Because it seems often they never learn. But whatever. It doesn't affect me. It's just kinda funny.

Really though I just know which hotel to avoid. It's not that I don't like AO people. It's just that the package people tend be..... I don't know not really my kind of people. And if I'm flying 8 goddamn hours to go BACK to Trinidad because the stupid ******** team had to make this game meaningful, instead of drinking in the hotel bar I'm going out on Tragarete and dancing with Venezuelan hookers until 7am again.

That looks like a really crappy stadium. I mean the stadium is fine and stuff just small and with the track it looks like a high school football place.

I will follow up via PM. So far, I've learned about maxi taxi routes and that the match vs. Honduras was a fiasco for attendees: http://socawarriors.net/federation-...portt-and-an-unfulfilled-world-cup-dream.html

Hopefully, the FIFA site is wrong and the match will be at Hasley Crawford.

I have rented cars many times. I just avoid it whenever possible. Every trip to Columbus includes a car rental.

Public transit is fun, cheap and, for away matches, often leads to wonderful interaction with local people.

In Antigua in 2012, Mel, the friendly St. John's guest house owner, dropped me off at the match as a courtesy while giving me a quick tour of the island and showing off his main house. After the match, I knew there would be vans back to town, and indeed I found one across the street in the burgeoning tropical storm. I rode back to town with a group speaking Antiguan Creole, bemoaning the late sub of the Antiguan star player that they blamed for the late US winning goal. A unforgettable experience.
