    I thought he had one. Didn't he camp with the US at some point?

    No. Klinsmann was thinking about calling him into train. Anything could happen over 2 years, but when I spoke with him back then, he didn't have a US passport yet.

    To remind our readers, he was estranged from his father and wasn't sure he could connect with him or even wanted to connect with him. Because his parents weren't ever married, the process to citizenship could prove much tougher for him than the other German-Americans.

    Yeah.. he falls into the category of a son of a solider where his dad doesn't seem to be that great of a guy.

    I take that back, I guess. Was jumping to conclusions about his passport.

    The article does say he and his agents could be looking to play elsewhere in Europe, outside of Germany.

    Not impossible but it'll be a real tough process to get his US passport when he's completely estranged from his father

    Is it not simply* just having someone/some documents that would be able to corroborate the info?

    *me, an idiot, who thinks that would be a simple process.

    It's more complex for parents who didn't marry, especially if the father denies paternity.

    Here's what is required:

    Birth Abroad Out-of-Wedlock to a U.S. Citizen Father – “New” Section 309(a)
    A person born abroad out-of-wedlock to a U.S. citizen father may acquire U.S. citizenship under Section 301(g) of the INA, as made applicable by the “new” Section 309(a) of the INA provided:
    1. A blood relationship between the person and the father is established by clear and convincing evidence;
    2. The father had the nationality of the United States at the time of the person’s birth;
    3. The father was physically present in the United States or its outlying possessions prior to the child’s birth for five years, at least two of which were after reaching the age of 14.
    4. The father (unless deceased) has agreed in writing to provide financial support for the person until the person reaches the age of 18 years, and
    5. While the person is under the age of 18 years --
    • the person is legitimated under the law of his/her residence or domicile,
    • the father acknowledges paternity of the person in writing under oath, or
    • the paternity of the person is established by adjudication of a competent court.

    Paragraph 5 is the tough one. It was either done before he turned 18 -- his mother got a court or government ruling that this was his father -- or it wasn't. If it wasn't, there may not be an easy way to get citizenship.

    And you need to prove blood relationship (likely a DNA test) and provide proof of the father having had residency of at least 5 years in the US. That's hard to do if the father doesn't want to cooperate or resists because of various concerns about back child support, for example. And if there isn't a good relationship between the two, it may be be impossible to get cooperation.

    It's much easier to get done if the parents were married at the time of birth, as is the case with most of the German-Americans.

    Christ. Thank you for this. Very thorough and eye-opening. May I ask where you grabbed this from I'd like to read a bit more on it.

    The club claims he has a US passport:

    https://nos.nl/artikel/2191635-roda-jc-haalt-transfervrije-gotz-naar-kerkrade.html

    Roda JC heeft de transfervrije Ashton Götz een contract aangeboden. De rechtsback met een Duits en Amerikaans paspoort zat zonder club nadat zijn contract bij Hamburger SV niet werd verlengd.

    Wouldn't be the first time a club gets it wrong, but we'll see if he's gone to the effort to get it done.

    Yesterday, Ashton made his starting debut in the Eredivisie, going 90' against Utrecht.

    Arbiter: Mulder 5
    Man of the Match: De Galgenwaard was vanmiddag voor negentig minuten het domein van Zakaria Labyad. De aanvallende middenvelder was voor de defensie van Roda JC een ware plaag en had dan ook wel meer goals en assists achter zijn naam kunnen krijgen dan de twee streepjes die nu op papier staan. De 24-jarige Labyad schoot van alle spelers namelijk het vaakst op doel (6 keer) en verstuurde ook nog de meeste keypasses (4).

    He was unlucky to debut against an unleashed FC Utrecht attack and midfield.

    If he has a US passport, he should be an option for the WC. Is Zusi really any better than this guy? Of course, I hope none of them make it because that means Yedlin or Chandler were injured or Arena decided against taking Chandler, but this guy should factor in this cycle, if he has a US passport.

    I haven't spoken with him or his people for a few years but knowing his situation, I highly doubt he has a US passport

    I feel the same way about Toljan too although I don't think he has any interest at all in the US team
