    all the time.jpeg .......................

I am reminded today of the sage words of Tonto:

Lately Kimo Sabe- Rev's bring "heap big medicine" for what ails U. What is it now, 10-0 over the last 3? The trend is your friend until the bend at the end.

    Three Stars:

***: Onyewu- Massive. He defended pretty well too.

**: Fafa- Had a need for speed all game.......but his clinical finishing needs an MD.....now........

    * (MotM): missed an open net (What's new?) but the early PK opened the middle, and Ilson stepped up and took advantage of it. Certainly his best game of the year.

    Philadelphia hits the season's mid-point at 6-7-4.

We'll see if St. Peter gives them a
Sporting chance-or has Mercy on 'em next week...........

-Honestly I have to give credit to Earnie's past offseason signings. It gives me hope after his first transfer window here. Onyewu, Picault, Medunjanin, Wijnaldum, and Elliott have been great and 4 of those guys are dirt cheap. Simpson still seems like a miss though.
-I think it's clear Elliott has a brighter future at CB than Yaro. Yaro just takes too much time on the ball and seems to then panic when attackers close the space around him. Elliott seems to have a better feel for when to control the ball and when to hoof it.
-Sapong and Pontius seemed to win every header off a goal kick but last season it never amounted to much. Now that we have a speed threat like Picault, it creates 1-2 real chances every match.
-I like Chris Pontius but it'd be awesome to have another Picault-type player on the right wing, maybe a guy like Ethan Finlay?
-Wijnaldum has finally earned Curtin's trust. I think he's officially the starter going forward, barring a lapse in play.
-A 3 game road trip up next... UGH... It's critical we try to pull out a win at Columbus or Montreal.

Gooch: does what he was brought in to do. Lend vet stability and be the enforcer on the back line. U will suffer if you extend his minutes beyond his limits at 35 yoa.

Gili: about time he gets a good look.
Jack: hell of a draft pick.
Fafa: brings an element of speed, but his last couple of outings signal "don't anoint him just yet".
Yaro & Simpson: need a formation change to maximize effectiveness. Don't hold your breath.

Pontius: made the sacrifice to help the overall attack. Taking off the invert takes away his best chances to score goals-but his all-around play opens up opportunity for others.

Haris: is replacing Nog's playmaking and shooting from deep-but is utterly incapable of replacing the Frenchman's work rate......and so his partner has to work twice as hard on the defensive end. Something that bears watching as the summer rolls on.........

It was ugly and then it was good and then there was a wow. But the mistaken Curtin may be my favorite Union tv moment ever.

Beating crap team at home is table stakes in this league. My belief in Jim to figure out his lineup on the road and get a result is still low.

I respectfully disagree with your observation. Now granted, your observing is limited to what the you are shown on TV/Internet. Having watched Harris in person, I can tell you his workrate is very high. He covers a ton of ground. He's not the quickest player, but he's also not slow either. It just takes him a bit to get to top speed. He's not N'Gola Kante or Ale Bedoya but he's an extremely effective deep lying playmaker.

He plays defense through sound positioning. He's very tactically astute. His partnership with Jones isn't that great, mainly because they haven't played together a lot in the past 2-3 months. Throght 17 games the Union have given up 20 goals this season. Last season through 17 games, they gave up 25 goals...

Oh that's fine. Disagree all you want. The adaptations the squad have had to make in terms of what he does/doesn't do is noticeable in terms of style of play from the first half of last year and has had an effect on certain players because of it. At least Philly tried to replace some of the skill set its greatest player to date brought to the table. I can give them credit for that, even as I disagree with your disagreement. I'm generally disagreeable anyway-so it all works.

I have to disagree about Gili. He was a major defensive liability at times who, while he made some big stops, made some big mistakes. If it was Fabinho who did the same, he would have been roasted alive by people.

Alao, Yaro looked good and composed on the ball.

    I like wins.

I knew we would not have any problems scoring on that NE backline. I have to admit, though, that I was expecting us to give up 2 or 3 at our end. On paper I didn't like the looks of our defense in 90+ degree heat. Kudos to their efforts.

We need to get 3 points from teams that are worse than us, and NE is one of those teams. Good to see we are stabilizing a bit...but that doesn't mean we're any better than mid-table.

What's interesting about that stat is that the union were riding high in the first half of last year. So our defense this year is up there with the best teams. Credit to the spine of Blake, Gooch and Elliott.

Now to work on that offense...

I sit next to the Union bench and when the trainer came off the field after tending to Gooch he was talking with Yaro who was warming up in front of us. Couldn't hear what he said but looked like he told him to continue to warm up because he might have to go on for Gooch before the half. I noticed Yaro warming up at halftime too but turns out it was Elliot he eventually went on for.

On a related note - heard Curtin tell Ilsinho that he had 5 minutes left (before Alberg was going to come on). Shortly thereafter he missed the sitter and as Curtin was walking back toward the bench I yelled "make him stay on another 5 minutes as punishment". He looked up at me with a smirk and a little shake of the head. Maybe Alberg heard it too given his immediate response.

I also enjoyed telling Kai to go home and clean the lint out of his hair after spending all day in Gooch's pocket.

Don't know what it was but I didn't have the usual sinking feeling that they were going to give up the lead, even after blowing a few chances. Not sure if it is the apathy or that it was New England.
