So as many of you are aware, the Portuguese league has fallen to 7th in the UEFA coefficient, meaning that in the 2018/19 season, Portugal will only have a maximum of two teams in the Champions League. This is not good for a league that was pushing Serie A for fourth just a few years ago and miles ahead of Russia, who has since passed Portugal.

You need to increase quality in Europe and I believe shrinking the league back down to 16 teams and abolishing the abortion that is the Portuguese League Cup will do the trick. I would argue that shrinking the league to 16 clubs will reduce costs, further increase competitiveness, arguably increase profitability, reduce fixture congestion, and increase quality. Reducing from 34 matches to 30 matches will reduce fixture congestion and increase rest which should lead to even better results in Europe.

I would also get rid of the League Cup and Super Cup. League cups are pointless and rare (only 11 countries in UEFA have them and very few around the world do) and cause undue fixture congestion.

It should be noted that in 2010-2011, Portugal had one of its best ever years in Europe, and it only had 16 clubs in the league that year. Food for thought.

    What do you think?

    I think
    It's a good idea

I would just add that Benfica should be demoted for corruption , Also if their fans weren't allowed to vote
    Portugal would become much more
    Prosperous economically

What is Benfica's political bent (left or right)?

I have no problem with the league cup. It gives smaller teams a chance to win a trophy like Moreirense did this past season.

Relegate Benfica for match fixing, vouchers, and influencing referees.

Hire foreign referees to ref games in Porutgal to combat Lampiao homerism.

Reduce the teams to 16, maybe.
    End League Cup, undecided.
    End Super Cup, no.

Portuguese league is terrible. Besides the top 5, most smaller clubs can't even get 2000 fans per game. The budgets of the smaller clubs are a joke. We can only do well in UEFA with less teams to get more points. Double edge sword. Europa league is the only way we can gain points.

We also need Sporting, Braga and hopefully Boavista in the future to help out a little.

I don't care much for the Benfica cup but it can stay.

It might be a good kick start but with questions in the long term. Portugal is Europe's darlings at the moment so... What about a billionaire buying one of the top 3? Myself, I would be against it. Another thing to improve the league is to have one Madeira team (unification).

Discussed before, never happens. Nacional and Uniao will never agree to it because they would be the ones that would loose their name/identification in lieu of Maritimo.

    This doesn't help:

I hope Portuguese football rots and suffers very many years. That's the only way they learn.

I appreciate your modesty, but the topic of the article was that the investigation was made public first to alert Benfica, rather than investigating in secrecy to ensure nothing is tampered with or destroyed.

    Here's the key excerpt:

So, "hoping Benfica pays the penalty" is not a realistic outcome at this point, is it?

Of course it is. Emails can be tracked. Let's see what they say.

Benfica did fire Pedro Guerra so...Things might get interesting.

    Btw: Porto got sanctioned today.

Waiting to hear how Benfica's corruption is really the cause for Sporting being so pitiful in Europe that they are now behind BRAGA, in UEFA Coefficients. So essentially, during BDC's time at Sporting, Braga has achieved more in Europe. Just incredible the ability of this con man.

Only a matter of time before this charade of having Sporting lumped together with Porto and Benfica ends and Top 3 gets replaced with Top 2 (Benfica,Porto) and Next 3 (Sporting, Braga, Guimaraes).

Must be a Trump supporter. I bring up a discussion and you deflect to a different topic. "But Hilary's emails!!!!"

We're talking about evidence potentially linking benfica to corruption and you bring up UEFA. Must be nice to bribe the officials every year, get first place and automatically qualify for Champions League. Bravo. I'm sure that also means you guys get seeded in the tournament as well, correct? Now you've avoided a handful of great teams. We played Madrid and Dortmund off the pitch. We didn't get ass raped to the tune of 4-1 by Dortmund.
