Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Bayern Munich in their UEFA Champions League Quarter Final’s second leg, becoming the only player in the history of the Champions League to score 100 goals.
After winning Euro last year, can we conclude that Ronaldo is the best player at European level we will ever witness. Right now, he is way ahead of Messi in term of stats. Whats your take on that?

Ronaldo is 32. Messi will turn 30 this year. So we have to wait on stats comparison or rely on averages. Portugal had the easiest road to the Euro final. They didn't even make it out of the group stage at the 2014 World Cup. The Euro win was more about their defense than their offense. Ronaldo while having an impact on his team getting to the euro final did not even play in the 2nd half of that final or the overtime. That was his second international final; haven lost to Greece in 2004. Messi has been in four finals, 3 COPAS and 1 World Cup and lost all four. Also Messi is a complete offensive player. He creates way more than Ronaldo. Ronaldo might be a more complete finisher. He might be the greatest finisher alive, but Messi creates and finishes. They are both great players, but for me Messi is the best. Frankly it's like comparing apples and oranges.

I believe Ronaldo's momentum have picked up this season a lot, that having said, I think Messi still has a chance to break his record but who knows, is hard to tell, because football matches need to be played and it all depends on the performance. But Ronaldo is just an incredible player and who knows if we'll have the chance to see another player like him once he decides to retire.

typical braizlian douche bag, none of you ever have anything positive to say about Cr7.

I should have PMed you to write my post and be my servant like a good brazilian obeying his Portuguese master

you are forgetting all the other things, like Ronaldo's superior winning mentality, worth ethic, and will power that saw him succeed as well as how it impacted his team.

Messi is nothing compared to CR7, and Real Madrid is on the verge of back to back.

Easy road to final? it wasn't any more difficult than what Messi had in WC 2014. he Cagoued like usual.

In the eight seasons they have both been in La Liga, Messi has 293 La Liga goals and Ronaldo has 284. Barcelona has 745 points and Real Madrid has 732. Both clubs have won two Champions Leagues. Barcelona has 253.342 UEFA club coefficient points and Real Madrid has 267.342. If Real Madrid wins the Champions League their lead will grow.

    Time will tell.

Originally I thought the thread intended to emphasize the European player but understand it now, European level includes South American players nowadays .

Ronaldo has overcome his critics through his sheer hard work and determination. There's no doubting he has always had unparalleled potential but to reach at those mind boggling stats one needs to tirelessly train and prove it on the pitch. Congratulations to Ronaldo for reaching at this feat!

@Gravizapa In my opinion, Buffon would win this. It would be more likely if he won the Champions League. Don't get me wrong, Ronaldo has been legendary with all the records he's broken but if Juve renders him obsolete, then there's no doubt that Buffon would win the the Ballon d'Or

While I'm not entirely Brazilian, I grew up there for the majority of my formative years (childhood and adolescence) before my family moved back to my native United States (my father worked for an American company that had business in Brazil and we spent a couple of decades there). I'm married to a Brazilian woman and visit the country at least every other year. My two children are dual citizens (Brazilian/American). I've seen hundreds of Brazilians rooting for Portugal in the Euro and for Portuguese clubs and players, and admiring Cristiano Ronaldo, and generally feeling that Portuguese-speaking footballers were the ones to support over the French, Italians, Germans, Spaniards, British, etc., so I don't understand your tirade. Maybe over here on BigSoccer you find some Brazilians who see the Portuguese as rivals, but certainly over there in the country a lot of people think of the Portuguese as brothers. Me, I like CR7 a lot more than Messi (no Brazilian or Brazil-sympathizer will ever root for an Argentinian).

Most Brazilians prefer Messi? Messi is Argentinian. Brazilians hate Argentinians (at least as far as football is concerned; otherwise they are called "hermanos").

What's wrong with Messi's mentality and work ethics?
Are you actually alluding that Messi lacks any of that? Messi was just presented with opportunity to score 500+ goals in his career and he hardly had to do anything outside pitch to do any of things he has done.

Messi is CLEARLY superior footballer to Ronaldo, he always was and always will be and no amount of waiting in the box will change that. I am not saying that scoring tap ins or headers or any kind of goal is easy, but it's not the only thing football exists of. Without players like Messi, that brings a ball to penatly box, players like Ronaldo are invisible.

It's one thing to spend majority of the games in midfield and inbetween midfield and attack, trying to connect the lines, build up play and score 50 goals a season, and it's another thing to just score 50 goals a season.
Dude, that debate has been seattled down years ago and it's not up for discussion because no amount of goals Ronaldo scores will change that. They are different players and even if Ronaldo finished with 10, 15 goals more in UCL history at the end, doesn't make the difference. He can score 20 goals in UCL next season and win it 3 times in a row, it won't make the difference.
The only way, debate could reopen is if Ronaldo begins playmaking from the deep at the same level as Messi, while remaining at 50+ goals a season.

That's not gonna happen. Ronaldo can be argued to be the greatest goalscorer of all time, which i think he is, definitely is in my lifteime, but that's his maximum. Messi is simply out of his reach. He simply doesn't qualify for the debate with Messi.

Right. I can't fathom why three quarters of BigSoccer is devoted to debate that .

Anyways, I think that not winning the Confeds cup will hurt his chances of winning the Bd'O.

Hardly think so it will hurt his chances. After all he did score 10 goals vs Bayern, Atletico and Juve in 5 games. That's extraordinary achievment and won't be overlooked.
He got 2016 ballon d'Or with minimum contribution to both Real and Portugal, FIFA would be very incosistent if they didn't give him ballon d'Or when he actually did some work.

Btw, just to brag a bit, since 2010 i haven't missed who will win a ballon d'Or and before that i wasn't even trying to guess. Believe me,.. i only wonder if he will win it in record margin, that's possible.

This was an obvious guess, just wait till you hear i predicted that Dani Alves (his careless defending) will cost PSG from advancing past Real 2 months ago (rewatch replays of all goals),... ;)

i've also nailed correct scoreline and sequence of events for Chelsea-Barca match, i even bet on that one and won!

Messi and Ronaldo are the players of the last 20 years. Everyone in his own way.
Messi is a dribbler who can use his teammates.
Ronaldo is a finisher, a head monster. He runs where the ball lands.
Ronaldo can also dribble and has a fantastic technique. But he can not play dribbling as well as Messi. On the other hand, Messi has also achieved header goals. But he can not do it as well as Ronaldo.

Looks like Messi is better on Saturdays and Sundays and Ronaldo is better on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
