Still digesting that pick. He wasn't a guy I was really considering in the second round with what I hoped was on the board. Cunningham and Tabor were there to be had. There were a couple of pass rushers I like in the next few rounds. Do you have any thoughts?
My "steals" for the draft are Ryan Anderson-Joe Mixon-Jordan Leggett-A.Kamara-Dalvin Tomlinson-Zach Cunningham-Curtis Samuel-DeMarcus Walker— Kirk Herbstreit (@KirkHerbstreit) April 27, 2017 I hope. @Catracho_Azul what you say?
Tall, strong guy, good run blocker, good hops-- might be good in the red zone and moving the sticks with crossing patterns and alley oops. But you take him here because you like him a lot as a special teams prospect, I think.
Love the Vikings draft, though it suggests to me that they think Bridgewater is not likely to recover. They seem to be rebuilding on a sort of Peyton Manning-ish model which Teddy is not, but Bradford might be. -Ish. Like the Buccaneers draft, and kind of like the Bills'... maybe just because I can use it to make a point. It is reasonable to think that all of these guys they took will play a whole bunch of snaps on their rookie contracts, even though they don't look much like future stars. It wouldn't surprise me if Shaheen or Sydney Jones turn out to be much better players overall-- but it is likely to take a couple of seasons to get much out of them. The teams that drafted them are likely to pay their tuition and medical bills as it were, and then watch somebody else get the heart of their careers. Your draftees are "supposed" to be the cheap player framework of your team, and guys like Jones or Shaheen aren't really likely to be that-- you are going to have to get them to re-sign to get the good of drafting them.
I like the Elflein pick by the Vikings. Jourdan Lewis to the Cowboys hurt. Seattle did well grabbing Nazair Jones.
UPDATED 4TH ROUND BIG BOARD: 1. Jaleel Johnson 2. Carl Lawson 3. Samaje Perine 4. Desmond King 5. Jake Butt 6. George Kittle 7. Howard Wilson 8. Caleb Brantley 9. Corn Elder 10. Dorian Johnson
Oh yeah-- also loved the Panthers picks-- anyone who just tees off on Cam will see a lot of ball carriers' backs next year. He's now in a position to get the ball out quickly to folks who are a threat to break it long every touch, Also liked the Kupp choice-- if anyone in this draft can make a man of Jared Goff, he's the one. Most interesting choice was Beathard? Is this what the Niners thought everyone was missing, their play for a home run? Or is he just another guy?
Interesting direction the Panthers are going. From taking massive jumpball receivers like Funchess and Benjamin and pounding the rock with Stewart/Artis-Payne to taking small yet immensely explosive receivers/runners in Samuel and CMac. I'm interested to see CMac's usage. Will it be moreso as a RB supplanting Stewart or as a WR alongside Stewart? Possibilities are interesting.
I just hope Gruden uses him like a power back. McCloughan was building a power line and Jay runs a finesse run game by sending big backs outside.
I'm feeling very down on this draft. Not only do I feel like we aren't drafting well, but I feel like our division rivals are having great drafts. I'd take Miami's draft over ours thus far and I don't even like Charles Harris.
Shanahan’s love mid-round RBs. Traded for Kapri Bibbs for 4th-round pick next year and drafted Utah's Joe Williams in 4th round this year.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 29, 2017 What did I say about Kyle? Zero chance he was taking Fournette.
I like Reeves-Maybin's athletic ability. We desperately needed more athletes in our front seven, and Reeves-Maybin is definitely providing us that.
To be honest. I feel like Quinn's trying to be too "hipster" with these picks. You want Foster? Nope, Jarrad Davis. You want Kittle or Butt? Nope, Michael Roberts from Toledo. You want a contributor in the 5th? We got some no-name from freaking San Diego State. Quinn's team isn't good enough for him to be that hipster in the draft.
This draft isn't good enough not to be. Keep in mind that informed as you are, you still don't have anywhere hear the info that he does; at this point he or somebody he trusts has probably watched every play they've ever played-- with a stopwatch-- met them, talked to their coaches, seen their transcripts, and most importantly with this draft class has medical opinions he more or less trusts on their MRI's, x-rays, and such. There's a limit to how closely we can understand a team's reasons for taking one guy over another. Now it is also true that some people who are being paid for this will turn out to be very bad at it, and he might well be one; but the Seahawks have been to a couple of Super Bowls in large part due to hipster picks, and when they started making same, they were worse than the Lions are. Incidentally I think that no-name from San Diego State was the guy I sort of noticed with them. He's way too small, so I didn't pay a lot of attention to him, but I did wonder if he might make a serviceable slot for somebody, or make it in Canada or something... On SDS level he can flat out play, but he seems really small-- small enough that I doubt his list size, which is already small.
So if Donald Trump thinks Beathard is the next Brady, can we take that as conclusive evidence that the pick was wasted?
Hey guys, if we are going to talk politics, move it to the appropriate thread and let's try to keep it civil.
