In a surprising move, the Big West decided not to invite UC San Diego up from the Division 2 ranks. Commissioner Dennis Farrell cited the conference was happy with its current membership and balance between Cal State's and UC's.

The Tritons have until September 15th, 2018 to find a home in Division 1, before their student referendum is voided and the fee increases are reversed.

if the UC/CSU split is an issue, seems like they have to find a CSU school to partner with, right?

MAC is looking to replace Buffalo immediately to maintain automatic NCAA berth for conference. Not perfect - tons of travel, but helps both out in short term.

San Diego State is currently the 6th associate in mens soccer for Pac12 so they can keep their NCAA tournament autobid. If some other Pac12 team started a program (Why doesn't USC have mens soccer, anyway?), SDSU could go Big West with UCSD.

UCSD wants to join the Big West in all sports, not just soccer.
