I have to say of those, my favorite is probably San Diego AFC. First because it's not an abbreviation used by any MLS team, and second because while sounding Euro like FC/SC if it really stood for America's Finest City it wouldn't actually be.

    Others that aren't bad

Mission San Diego (due to the obvious ties to the history of the region)
San Diego Bolts (talk about a big eff you to the Chargers)
San Diego Aviators (due to the regions's ties to both the history of aviation and our MCAS and NAS at Miramar and North Island).

I'm an outsider with no stake in this potential club whatsoever but I agree that Mission San Diego sounds the best. Would love to see colors and badge concepts for that.

San Diego AFC or AFC San Diego sounds legit and would actually have relevance as well.

Unfortunately it looks like San Diego FC/SC is a runaway favorite. Man soccer fans can be boring sometimes. FC/SC names are so lazy and unimaginative.

Come on fellas, clearly it has to be either Footy McFooty Face or Bad Hombres.

I can pretty much guarantee you it won't.

SoccerCitySD will submit the top 10 names to MLS - who then in turn checks the branding stuff, naming rights etc and then will weed out all of these more or less funny proposals swiftly leaving us with a couple of others to vote for.

We'll probably get the most sedate ones we can. FC, SC, AFC, and maybe one or two others with no character.

So we're gonna copy LAFC. San Diego doesn't copy LA. We are better than that.

Copying LA, NY, Orlando, Atlanta, basically every team that's come in during the last 7 years. MLS has lost any sense of adventure when it comes to the names, and it seems the fans are fine with it. They'd rather come up with their own nicknames anyway.

10 will be submitted to MLS, depending on how many McFootyFace and similiar troll candidates get in, that's gonna leave us with a few others to choose from.

FS also said that the FC, SC, AFC thing, mascot etc and all could still be added to the proposed names afterwards, even if they aren't there now.

I hope it's not gonna end up just with SDFC with an anker on the logo

Unfortunately as of today that remains the runaway favorite. Simply San Diego FC/SC.

The lack of imagination never ceases to astound.

Just so everyone is clear on it from the name the team contest

San Diego - Pick Your Team Name
We've narrowed down the 1,000+ submissions to just 50. In the spirit of March Madness, we will have 4 rounds of voting, one each week of March. The bottom 10 team names each week will be knocked off the list, and we'll repeat until we wind up with 10 names.
We'll submit those 10 to Major League Soccer for review, and pretty soon we will have a team name! Note - Soccer Club or Football Club can be added to names, and similarly, a nickname or mascot can be added to traditional names. You, the fans, will help us decide on that later!

Well, a San Diego Soccer Club already exists, and FC seems to be more preferred of those 2 either way.

While I could live with such a name, it's nothing special and unless it's Futbol Club ;) it's Euro/English pandering at it's finest, along with the likely anker to top the cake...

San Diego Surf seems to be an alternative that is quite liked as well, all tough if I remember correctly a prior team of some sort exists or existed already as well, with the SC at the end.

I expect about 3-5 Alternatives to be on the very final ballot, with FC and Surf being two of the options.

Futbol club IMO is pandering as well to points south of the border. Frankly if they're going to go FC/SC it should be SC as that's what the game is called in this country. I can't abide either version of FC due to the pandering aspect.

That said, I fully expect you're right that FC will be one of the options. Though Surf is already being used by the Southern California Surf PDL team so I imagine they'll have to negotiate to use that one if they have it as a finalist just as they'd have to with Sockers.

Of the names currently in the "Top Ten", the three that I believe to be the best are:

    San Diego Armada
    San Diego AFC
    Mission San Diego

I like Surf, although California Surf was an NASL team in Anaheim from,'78-'81.

Armada is good but we would be copying Jacksonville.

Mission and Athletico are strong. I wish Sockers was on the list.

the top two votes currently are San Diego Surf and San Diego Football Club with a lead of 500 votes on all others, with Surf having a slight edge.

If it would between those 2 > Surf any day (which would also likely avoid the dreaded anchor iconography)

Just out of curiosity, did anybody of you also put forward suggestions?
    If so, which ones?

I submitted 3: San Diego Explorers, San Diego Seals and San Diego Soccer Club*
(*certainly put forward by others as well)
Explorers didn't make the top 50, Seals looks to at least crack the top 40 and the 1st round, and SDSC probably ends up making the top 20.

I wonder if the youth group San Diego Surf has been pumping up the Surf name. Which also raises and issue with it, someone is already using it.

Round two has Surf leading SDFC and McFooty so far.

As for the Surf name or potentially any other one (Sockers, SDSC etc) which already taken or in use I'm positive something could be worked out.

FS and LD seem pretty inclusive with the grassroots movement and various soccer clubs/programms from what I can gather.

Good. They're going to need all the support they can muster, particularly if they can't get SDSU on board.

As for the name, I can't help but think that there is someone pimping Surf for the vote. It's got way too many votes to be legit.
