i thought the Irish enjoyed being part of the EU especially as it pisses off the English

A true Irishman enjoys the inherent leverage of his self-contradictions.

Why end of thread? We can keep going with this.

Let's talk about what the word "Yankee" means.

I'm just saying it's fun to go full thread jack when you know the thread is on life support. What does the term Yankee mean?

Oh, I'm just throwing out bait because it's one of those things that means different things to different people.

To a foreigner, a Yankee is an American.
To an American, a Yankee is a northerner.
To a northerner, a Yankee is a descendent of old English Protestant families.

I have some Yankee ancestry on my dad's side tracing back to the Arbella, but although I'm part of the fourth American generation on my mom's side, their Irish Catholic selves ain't Yankees.

We all know what it means.

Its origin, however, is interesting. Scholars are mixed on whether it comes from a Native American or Dutch sources.

The origin of "gringo" is interesting as well.

    Your turn ;).

My Mexican friends told me that Gringo came from a Mexican general commanding his troops to attack by yelling "Green, Go!"

But...they also told me that all people from the city of Puebla were under 5 feet tall and called "Chiquis". So.

A common misconception throughout Latin America is that it comes from Green Go Home (Green for the dollar), an anti-imperialist cry. The only problem with this is that the word predates the new world in literature.

An origin I tend to believe is that it is a corruption of the Spanish word for Greek, Griego. Much as we say "it's all Greek to me" when talking of foreign languages, Iberians may have used it to refer to any foreigner.

Nothing. We are Europeans. Just as the English are. Unlike the English, we have no problems with that fact and no problems with being in the EU, and not just for economic reasons. These days, we don't even mind being mixed up with the Scots, which is a real change.

Confuse us with the English on the other hand . . .

Its not like we ever occupied Latin America with standing armies. The whole story doesn't make sense.

The point is that the green go story makes no sense.

  18. Rumours in the Netherlands have it to be derived from the in those days common Dutch male name Jan-Kees.
The English used it to slur the Dutch in the American colonies.

This is the version I heard (Jan Kees being roughly synonymous with John Doe). As New Amsterdam was transitioning to New York, the British used it as more of a short hand for the inhabitants than a slur.

    here
I'll add, way back in the day, my friend learned Swedish from his mom for when he went back and visited rellies. We were in a bar in Holland and he was excited that he could communicate with a Danish gal, because of the similarities in the languages. (they were both good looking people, I'm sure they were both working hard to make it work, with the potential for a hook-up and all).

In Italy, I didn't have a ton of trouble understanding Italian, with my moderately conversational Spanish. And, outside of Italy, I had Italian speakers understand my Spanish - enough. In Italy itself, they don't want to hear Spanish - they get pissed. At least, that was my experience.
