The bid was submitted, apparently two minutes left in the deadline: http://www.mlssoccer.com/topic/expansion/2017/expansion-cities-bids Detroit Submission announced: 4:58 PM ET - Tuesday, Jan. 31
The article has the same jail site renderings included. They claim theyre building a 23,000 capacity stadoum in the heart of the "sports and entertainment district". Is this an actual designated or at least generally understood section of downtown because that sounds like it could still be in any area of downtown. Clearly the assumption would be the jail site but other areas would fit that profile if you ask me.
It's the jail site. They plan to make their offer in the next few days. http://www.freep.com/story/money/bu...bert-soccer-cullen-jail-wayne-evans/97258316/
To stick my big toe into the political pool, Bradford 10 (and amadora2700 in an earlier post), I stopped reading the Freep when they declared Michigan for Clinton just minutes after the polls closed, and they were off by (a) the Michigan result, (b) the fact that it took about, what, six weeks, to decide the state. Getting it atrociously wrong is what I'm really protesting.
So the offer has been made, On first reading it seems like a legit proposal. I think this is going to happen. http://www.freep.com/story/news/loc...w-jail-courthouse-swap-gratiot-site/97570484/
Truman/Dewey...nobody ever bats .1000 but I'll post a link from another source for you to read: http://www.socceramerica.com/articl...group-makes-offer-for-jail.html?edition=16791
http://www.freep.com/story/news/loc...w-jail-courthouse-swap-gratiot-site/97570484/ Whoo Hoo! If the county doesn't accept this proposal, there is some dirty stuff going on. No way they won't take this deal. Gilbert is offering to essentially build the jail AND a new courthouse, for free, in a different location... if its the Mound road location I'm thinking of, that's a five minute drive from downtown, and very accessible county-wise, so there really isn't a downside to this proposal. Personally I'm convinced that Gilbert is willing to go through all of this trouble not for Soccer, but just so the jail isn't built, because he owns all of the Greektown property around it. Thats ok though, because Gores is really passionate about Soccer, so therefore its a great partnership. If the county accepts this deal, which one would think that they have to, Detroit has by far the best proposal and would be an expansion lock... Maybe even for 2020. I'm giddy! If they don't accept, I'll be devestated.
I am no expert on federal bonds, but I am worried about this... "However, the possibility that the county could be forced to repay millions of dollars in federal bond subsidies if the jail is built elsewhere raises the bar." On a separate note I have the feeling your thread will be moved to the Detroit specific thread. If you want to talk about this in the general expansion thread then you probably should post this in the "28, sooner or later thread"
Not that it really matters, but I don't think the deadline was 5:00 EST. 3 other teams submitted after 5 pm. Indianapolis at 5:06 Nashville at 5:10 Charlotte at 5:37
This seems like a no brainer for Wayne County, but some of the County representatives don't seem very positive... This one is not to bad... This one is not very positive... This last part is worrisome... Lets hope they consider this an "out of this world deal".
With an offer from Dan Gilbert‘s Rock Ventures on the table, Wayne County is looking to settle the fate of a proposed MLS stadium site in Detroit in two weeks. http://soccerstadiumdigest.com/2017/02/county-to-weigh-offer-for-proposed-detroit-mls-stadium-site/
Gilbert and Gores had better have a plan B and/or C for their stadium location. If they're betting it all on the jail site, they risk torpedoing their own bid.
Detroit — Mayor Mike Duggan says Dan Gilbert’s plan for a new criminal justice complex downtown makes “very good sense” and, no matter the outcome, he’s confident Detroit will be home to a major league soccer franchise. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/ne...ident-city-landing-soccer-franchise/97641254/
Waaah waaah waaah!!! http://www.cm-life.com/article/2017...ayers-will-pay-the-price-on-and-off-the-field
...just another article claiming that Detroit City somehow "owns" soccer in Detroit and no one else can interfere.
During his State of County address yesterday, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said that the proposal made by Dan Gilbert's Rock Ventures in an effort to build a soccer-specific stadium on the site of an unfinished jail on Gratiot Avenue must "get better and move faster" if it is going to come to fruition. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/articl...t-get-better-and-move-faster-to-get-jail-site
Do we have any updates on the process of securing the jail site for MLS yet? I couldn't find any.. EDIT I did find this: Is Wayne County jail-soccer deal handcuffed? Bond funding obligations could push the price too high http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20170521/NEWS/170529984/is-jail-soccer-deal-handcuffed
"I’ve directed my team to dedicate their time and resources toward attempting to reach a contract with Rock Ventures,” Evans said in a statement. "The Rock Ventures proposal has more upside, less risk and a smaller financial gap than Walsh Construction’s proposal." Getting closer to a done deal! http://www.freep.com/story/news/loc...ail-proposal-but-not-done-deal-yet/524955001/
And the Detroit News story. BTW - the location of the proposed new jail and justice center has changed from the initial version. Now near I-75 service road and E Warren area. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/ne.../2017/07/31/wayne-county-jail-site/104158090/
