Having been to both Heat games and Messiah games, and as much as I love indoor soccer, go to the Messiah double-header.

Division 3 outdoor soccer? I mean... if you went to school there and have a rooting interest I say go for it because most likely the Blast-Heat game will not be competitive. But at the same time... its division 3 outdoor.

Agreed. I always go with the "what might I miss" criteria. The D3 team winning, or the Heat pull off the unthinkable. Heck, even keeping it close would be encouraging.

Yeah, it looked like they're on local TV, but their feed was really bad. On the plus side, it's a great looking arena, and there is a good crowd.

First Big upset of the year, Turlock beats Tacoma 7 to 5 in Turlock. Turlock home games could end up giving a number of teams problems this season. As for tonight's Blast/Heat game, not sure what to expect but still believe the Blast will win. The Heat are only returning 5 players from last year and have a good number of new faces. I think they are heading in the right direction with Cabral as coach. If he is as good as a coach as he was as a player, then the Heat should have a very good future. Really liked the Heat's jerseys in the team picture on their website. Hopefully they were able to spruce up their old turf or purchased a new one. The Blast have retained about 10 talented players from last year and also have a number of new faces. I believe, they are without Roque until after Christmas. They should remain strong with DK as coach and his ability in picking up new talent, including a very good move in picking up Santana from Syracuse. Also, Vanzela returning in goal will continue to give problems for the opposition.

Let's be fair here look at how many consecutive looseing seasons has the heat had In years they have Lost 60 games and have only won 13 games. It's going to take some time to get the fans back in the arena. The only way to do that is to start to win games. You can spend tens of thousands of dollars promoting the team, YOu can change the players , coach , owner , Logo and the jerseys all you want. The truth is they are going to need to prove that they are a winner on and off the field before the fans come back.

    2015-16 ( 1-19)
    2014-15 (2-19)
    2013-14 (4-12)

I will try to explain this again. Every Sponsor gets tickets with its package and they are counted into the attendance. Yes you could be correct that less than 1,000 people are in the building but the tickets still need to be counted. I am also positive that teams need to sell a minimum number of tickets or they must pay an upcharge to the arena and sometimes its just cheaper to buy the remaining tickets then it is to pay the upcharge fee to the arena.

You are right but slightly off. About 5 days before the game the arena mmgt company will sit down/conference call with the team to review tickets sold. There is a minimum gate for each game that the team will have to either increase by paying money or meet by exceeding tickets sold. Sponsors tickets are not counted. Never.

This pow wow gives the arena mmgt company an ability to set staffing levels and order food/beer etc.

Now a long term tenant like the Blast it will be a 5 minute call. There is sophisticated computer programs that arenas will use that looks at the last 2-3-4-5 years off attendance and allow variables such as a Tuesday night, projected snow, another local team playing, popular giveaway or any outlier that can increase or decrease attendance. They are usually able to predict AHL games to within 2-300 people actually in attendance. The larger the crowd the wider range. A game two years ago in the NHL had the count exactly correct, which, outside of a sell out is pretty good.

Concurrently, thinking back to a Pennsylvania Roar situation with a new team, niche sport and low advance means the call will be upwards of an hour. In case of a small advance the team owner needs to "buy" a minimum number of tix so the arena can run legally and financially ahead of the game.

I can tell you in Baltimore all tickets are counted including Sponsor tickets. I am sure you are correct on the Conference call. I know that the Blast will also have one with the league , To let them know the exact schedule since they are doing the Ring Ceremony and the Banner drop and the Parade of champions. So I honestly dont think that this game will start until 7:45 or later. I am not exactly sure what the league policy is on this.

I would be very surprised if any arena other than Royal Farms would count sponsor tickets. The Blast have been there for awhile and probably/hopefully have a good working relationship with each other but to count sponsor tix is crazy as a business practice. They will not all show up, you are building your scheduling, headcount and police/fire numbers on an inflated number.

Nothing surprises me about the City of Baltimore anymore. The Blast no longer get prime dates like they use to now we are playing more sunday games than ever. I was actually talking about the reported attendance numbers to Point streak or what printed in the paper. I am sure the arena has a way of knowing home many people to plan for. Most of the time its about 8-10 Police officers in the arena and A Fire Marshall , I am not sure if they still have a medic on hand since the fire station is so close to the arena.

Well, for most minor league teams the medic on duty is there because
1- city fire code says they have to be there due to the number of people in attendance.
2-teams insurance says they have to be there
3- arenas insurance policy says they have to be there.

For instance all AHL Games need a medic. NHL agreement demands it. In 2003 a big fire in the Station nightclub in Greater Providence (Warwick, RI) killed 100 people and injured a bunch more. Rhode Island is a small state, probably 1.2 million people, this overwhelmed every fire, police and ambulance in the state. They needed to call in mutual assistance from Massachusetts and Connecticut to cope. Because it was traumatic to all a lot of medics and fire took some time off. The Providence Bruins almost cancelled the next 2 games because they couldn't find anyone to work the detail, the Providence Bruins finally had to hire a group out of Buffalo who specialize drove 7 hours to attend two games.

But one thing that absolutely would not have happened was the game to go ahead without the paramedics. The league, the two teams, the players association and the parent clubs were all on board to move the games.

The Baltimore arena has a Medical staff on duty , I believe it is 4 people. , I do not know if they are actual medics , or just nurses. The city calls for an Ambulance when it's needed it take less then 5 mins to get to the arena it's located on 15 st Eutaw street. I they can be at the arena in 3 mins with traffic . Look how close the station is to the arena .

In other news, Milwaukee has not had an effective media person since relieving Tom Wynn of those duties lo these many years ago. This latest quote from today's Wave email speaks volumes:

"The loss in Kansas City was definatley not the way we wanted to start our season but we still have a very good young team," said Head Coach Giuliano Oliviero. "We worked on alot of things this week during practice and have learned from our mistakes. If we're gonna give up goals, the other team has to earn them, we just don't want to hand them over."

For a minor league team, especially a new minor league team the basic business plan should always be hire someone to run the on field product. then focus on sales. focus on nothing but sales.

Nothing else matters SALES. That's it.

You can get new players, get a new coach, figure out the complaints about the visiting teams hotel on due time. Focus on sales. Some minor league teams pay everyone a commission, players, coachs, secretaries, sales staff a commission on every ducats sold.

There was a French Canadian guy who played for the KC Blades of the IHL who made (numbers approximate) $70k in salary and $70-80K in commission one year. The guy was fairly good looking and would sell tickets anywhere to anyone.

While hockey stories have a reputation for being embellished over time and few players let the truth get in the way of a good story.........he is alleged to have sold 400+ tickets and got laid all in one night by being the only (straight) male in the crowd during one of those Chippendales male nude dancers nights at some club in KC's Power and Light District.

He ended up marrying some local Missouri girl and they moved back to Quebec City. The DeVos' wanted him to go to Orlando and be a sales guy for the Magic when he retired. About 4 years later they remembered him and wanted to make him head of sales for Amway in Camada or head of sales for thw Magic. He declined, saying he was now the lead salesman for industrial air conditioners in Quebec. Read that again and let it sink in......he sells air conditioners in Quebec. He obviously is a gifted salesman.

A Baltimore owner floating two teams to make his dying 5-team league work? Where have I seen this before?

But wouldn't he be considered a DC owner first?

I'll be surprised if this works at the Royal Farms Arena.

Even the arena GM only expects they will draw 3,000-6,000 a game, which would put them on the very low end of historical AFL team averages.
