No reason to feel sad...ultimately Brazil having Neymar needed penalty to beat this assembled German squad...excellent game by Germany
Sule and Klostermann was out of the world...Toljan was good too

Brazil were much more competitive than I remember them. And still, if we had fielded our full potential like Brazil did, we would have comfortbaly won this. The good thing is that Brazil probably continue to believe everythings fine with their setup

Well Goretzka and Meyer and Ginter and Brandt are already in the squad or close to it. That won't change. Some others who will definitely make it are Sule, Klostermann if he can keep playing like this and maybe Gnabry.

Players who I wouldnt bet on making it are Selke, Horn and most of the sub's who to be fair we didn't see much of.

From the Olympics squad, Süle and Brandt are IMO closest to making that jump to the senior NT. Meyer too although hopefully he continues to elevate his game consistently for Schalke. Klostermann and Toljan are good future fullback options to consider. While I want to see Gnabry up there as well but he needs to begin establishing himself on the club level first. Which is why making a decision towards his future this summer is critical.

Agreed. But even Brandt on this evidence needs to up his game significantly to really find a place in the squad since Germany is overloaded with talent in his position. He will have to fight Reus, Draxler, Muller, Gotze and maybe even Ozil for minutes. So he has to be playing really well for a while.

I actually think Klostermann or Max are closest. Klostermann in 2018 will be starter ahead of Hector if his development continues

Goretzka to replace Schweini or the injury prone Khedira.

I know Meyer/Goretzka have played 1 cap for Germany but neither has been picked since May 2014, that's almost 2 years and half ago so neither is really in the squad. Gnabry needs to establish himself at club level while being consistent. I do agree that Horn was not that good and Germany has too many good goalkeepers that are so much better than him. While Selke wasn't that great at the Olympics he still has potential although his wasting of so many chances is a big -,lack of good finishing.

So the census seems to be
    -Brandt
    -Sule
    -Meyer
    -Goretzka
    -Gnabry (potential)
    -Klostermann

To do that first he has to stop being injury prone himself. Honestly he hasn't played two full seasons of high level football yet and we are anointing him as a replacement for one of Germany's most important players and a crucial part of one of the best club teams in football currently?

Özil and Müller will definitely remain first choice starters for NT. Draxler at his age now should be moving into that spot but needs to show maturity and consistency. Reus, I hate to say it but he has bad luck whenever tournaments come around. So he remains a question mark if he's a viable option. Götze seriously needs to resurrect his career at Dortmund this season. He might still get selected based on history and past accomplishments but he can't be a dead weight passenger anymore.

I like Goretzka but unfortunately he too gets injured often. Dahoud deserves a chance though, while Weigl and Kimmich (if he plays midfield) could have a larger role now.

While Sule was very impressive, Central defence is also an area kind of hard to break into with only 2 spots and Boateng, Hummels, Mustafi, Howedes, Tah Rudiger all ahead of him currently and playing in better clubs, he would need to have a very outstanding next 2 seasons to have a chance of even making the squad

Our weak points where we need players are Full backs, CM and especially striker.
So the chances for Toljan and Klostermann looks better with only Kimmich and Hector who havent sealed those spots themselves.

Striker we still have a big problem and Selke doesnt look close to being the answer, He is so mediocre and disappointing. There should be a striking emergency declared by the DFB

    Horn can forget it.

The competition in AM is fierce Gotze, Schurrle, Muller, Ozil Sane, Draxler, Reus. Brandt, Meyer and Gnabry have to do much better

Why didn't Geis make the Olympics?

I think Volland may have a good chance of solving our striking problem...

Volland has had this chance on a plate for two years now and never shown like he could be the answer. Hopefully this move reinvigorates him.

To be honest if we have Reus, Gotze and Muller on form and a fit Gomez, goals will not be that difficult to come by at least until World Cup 2018. Its only in the unlikely event that all of those players are unfit or terribly out of form, that the striker topic resurfaces.

Is Volland playing as striker for Leverkusen? I thought he would be an AM with Chicharito being the striker. I am also interested in Volland's development

    What of timo werner

Yep. Unfortunate. Although I do think he can leapfrog Höwedes if he makes a move next summer, and Rüdiger might be considered more of a RB by Jogi.
Why CM? It's a really strong area for Germany IMO; Dahoud, Kimmich, Weigl, Goretzka, Gündoğan, etcetera are all fighting for spots.
I still have some faith in Selke's long-term outlook (same goes for Horn) but yeah, he's not ready. I can't believe we haven't even developed a true CF on the level of Peter Crouch yet after Gomez. It's insanity.
Klostermann in particular was impressive IMO. Overall, I think the FB outlook is much better than the CF outlook though. Between Passlack, Klostermann, Kimmich, and Weiser there's a few potential breakout players for the RB position between now and the WC, and we at least have adequate players at LB between Plattenhardt, Schmelzer and Hector.
Gnabry needs consistent top level playing time before even giving so much as a thought to the NT. Brandt is on the verge of breaking into the NT IMO. He's already better than Schürrle and I think he's next in line in Löw's pecking order after Podolski retired. Meyer is an unfortunate casualty of simply having better players ahead of him.

I did see in the formation chart that Leverkusen played a 4-4-2 with Volland and Chicharito side-by-side in their Pokal match, but IDK if that was their in-game shape through the match, as I didn't see the game itself.

concerning strikers, have we even had really successful strikers in the last 14 years that weren't Klose or Gomez? I recall Klinsmann and Low tried so many strikers in those years only to always end up back with the reliable Klose. Gomez is most likely done after the WC18 as he'll be 35 for Euro 2020.

    Erm... no.

Maybe it's time to just throw Hummels up top and call it a day, like Barça sometimes does with Piquè. :p

For a country and an association that is so forward thinking with research, two things alarmingly stand out for me with regards to this German football renaissance.

One is the acute lack of a true striker produced by the system, Gomez notwithstanding ( let's remember Klose came via a totally different route). This is particular galling when you consider that this is an era when most competing nations are blessed with very good striking talent. Even leaving South America out of the equation, the depth of striker quality in England and France is very very good and even traditionally smaller nations like Belgium and Poland have produced some world class forwards whereas we have struggled immensely in that department.

The second is in the amount of injuries that plague German players (or players playing in Germany). I haven't crunched the numbers but basic observational analysis leads me to conclude that our injury record deviates significantly from the norm. The amount of injuries our top players pick up is pretty unparalleled for any/all big nations and is somehow seen as acceptable or something we can do little about. I think this is a serious ailment which really affects growth and development of a player in the early stage (think Draxler) and really lowers longevity in a latter stage (Schweinsteiger). Honestly the only three players of this German generation not prone to injuries is Ozil, Lahm and Muller. With the rest its almost a lottery as to who makes it and who doesn't. I fail to see any progress in getting to the bottom of this.

I think this is a larger issue and trend than just us though in top-level football.
I think this is also a larger problem than just us though. England is an anomaly to be honest, and their forwards like Kane severely disappointed in the EUROs, so I do wonder if their forwards are actually good or if they're just the best of a really poor group of up-and-coming CFs in world football. France, for all their talent at the position, went back to playing off Giroud, who's essentially the French Gomez, which has me wondering if players like Griezmann or Martial aren't more secondary forwards a la Reus as opposed to true CFs. The winner of the tournament in Portugal barely even used a true CF at all. Maybe this is just the direction football is going.
