I've seen old footage of the old German wnt with the great Birgit Prinz scoring something like 4 goals all on her own against an Asian team during one Olympic tournament lol, and no player in all of women's football could hope to accomplish that feat right now at the highest level.

Plus following Japan in recent times and listening to their old coach Norio Sasaki, he pretty much opened up my eyes in understanding the group stage of the women's Olympic tournament a genuine non factor, whilst leading the Nadeshiko towards a highly controversial gold medal match in England.

So just between those two examples 1) we've all seen the women's game evolve towards having more defensively robust nations, all able to help expose the technically inferior creativity showcased amongst the current top ranking sides 2) a tournament never known for showcasing the best of the women's game, has already seen the more perceptive coaches identify the lack of momentum/form necessary to advance towards it's later rounds.

I mean Germany didn't qualify for the last tournament, and Japan didn't qualify for this one either, so the signs were already pointing at the games trends for more robust defensive play, to finally filter through to the watered down process of the Olympic tournament at some point soon, and here we are....

Expand this tournament to 16 nations next time.
This tournament could have used Japan, England, Norway, and Mexico.

    UEFA (5 slots)
    AFC (3 slots)
    CONCACAF (3 slots)
    CONMEBOL (2 slots)
    CAF (2 slots)
New Zealand Republic of OFC (1 slot)

They can't have England, England have no National Olympic Committee. UK have one and could have participated if the four FA's in it could agree on it (they can't).

    I meant Great Britain.
It's all the same to me, since a Great Britain team would be the England national team + Kim Little.

lol Expanding the WWC didn't improve it's overall quality, and it most certainly won't help raise/improve the quality of the Olympic tournament either.

See, if people genuinely wanted to improve the value or quality of this particular tournament, I think we'd have the women's competition function the same way as the men's has for a long time now, allowing a certain number of overage players to mix in with a U-23 age group.

With this we get more intriguing games, and more beneficial developmental opportunities for players too, all taking part in a competition that prior to it's final always seems to be operating as it's a glorified youth event anyway.

And yeah, I know much of this sounds like sacrilege to fans/followers of the few wnt's who've seen their program's construct various financial pathways around the annual WWC-Olympic cycle, but given the post WWC fatigue we always see for the Olympics, the idea of further expansion magically improving things in the long run is... well, rather odd.

Expanding this tournament to 16 in the recent past would have included Japan, Dutch, and Norway in Rio 2016.
That would have beefed up the field quite a bit.

Great Britain needs to get their act in gear and field a women's team.
England + Kim Little is quite formidable.

Without Japan and England (Great Britain) in this tournament, it was not nearly a prestigious tournament to win.
That's your Silver and Bronze winners from last year's World Cup.

The tournament was so watered down, that Germany didn't have to face a Top 5 team in the FIFA rankings at all.
    Group state or Knockout round.

    Congrats on the Gold Medal.
Germany is now just three behind USA, but has momentum gong forward into Euro 2017.

    Facts are facts, however:

In the SheBelieves Cup, USA beat three FIFA Top 5 teams. 3 of them.
In the Olympics, Germany beat zero FIFA Top 5 teams. 0 of them.

@WWC_Movement Ok.... Expanding the tournament isn't going to improve the quality or prestige of a tournament few people care about until the final airs on their tv screens.

Great Britain's footballing absence from the Olympic's is a lot more complicated than people around here care to understand; so please go and take a google search on why the British FA's don't like, or want, the Team GB football thing being a regular process for the Olympics.

Germany being a well known footballing power weren't at the previous Olympic's either buddy, and guess what, nobody cared! But here you are still whining about another average Olympic tournament, this time being won by somebody not named USA, when USA, France, and Brazil, were all struggling over the 90 mins to break down and beat the same teams Germany had to get past in order to win a medal in the end.

Oh, and when you resort to trying to reason that some random one off sanitary pad sponsored event held on US soil remains some form of evidence for why USA is still the best, your really not making any statement at all. USA got knocked out by Sweden, Sweden the makes the final by getting past the hosts, and the Germany beats Sweden in a decent game without the need of extra time or PK's. That's how tournament football works lol.

Seriously, outside a North American audience people didn't care about how Sweden reached a final, or what it meant for the credibility of the tournament moving forward not to have the US there either. No special teams existed here.

So beyond the hosts not having a home team trying to get gold, there was literally no negative effects of having Sweden play Germany in the final, making various efforts to create a narrative of the medals decreasing in value without the US being able to defend hilarious for it's level of genuine narcissism.
