If I say United, people here immediatly know I'm talking about DC United. No one on here uses FC as a nickname for the team. United is a nickname in MLS, so now that there are two it is confusing and three would be worse. FC isn't a nickname. And no one complains about there being multiple cities because the cities are actually named City (Kansas City and New York City) and aren't being used as nicknames.
I posted this somewhere, sometime ago..... "In the past, peregrine falcons in Minnesota nested on cliff ledges along rivers or lakes. Presently, they nest primarily on buildings and bridges in urban settings and use historic eyries on cliffs along Lake Superior and the Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota. Because peregrine falcons specialize in direct aerial pursuit of avian prey, they prefer open, non-forested areas for hunting." Clearly, this team cries out to be known as the Minnesota Falcons .
Atlanta has sold 22,000 season tickets. This is not seat deposits. Real season tickets. The supporters section is 3000 and growing. 8 of the 10 club sections have sold out.
"United" and "FC" are NOT nicknames. They are part of the official team name. And no one should use "United" by itself, as it does not identify any club. The identifier is the city part of the name. If anyone assumes that "United" identifies DC United, then they are the ones that need to change their thinking. There is no confussion in the EPL with so many teams having "United" in their names. So I don't understand why WE have to act confused here.
Yeah, I thought so. I just needed to actually hear it from you guys, which is why I inserted 'EPL' in my post. So then, this really isn't about soccer or MLS club names... it's about spiting and going against anything English.
No. Unbunch your panties. Its about one team being called United for 20 years. Over two decades, the team has come to be identified simply as United. Whether you English sensibility is capable of wrapping your head around that really doesn't matter. It is what it is.
I tend to think a lot of MLS fans are regularly going to refer to the 2017 expansion teams as "Atlanta" and "Minnesota" -- rather, than too regularly referring to either as "United." Not unlike how a lot of people just say "DC" when talking about that team. But yes, there certainly is some real established history in MLS of "United" meaning DC, or DC United, and that likely will start to change and evolve somewhat now with these new teams joining the league in 2017. I'm guessing the league will be just fine as a business with all these "overlapping" names and brands for franchises, and they seem to be getting along fine with FCD, TFC and NYCFC all in the league, and LAFC joining it soon.
I have never associated the label "United", by itself, with DC United since the inception of the league. And I would be very surprised if the majority of MLS fans (aside from a few DCU supporters) have.
Yeah, I get it. When our misconceptions are challenged by someone we like to invoke the 'troll' label.
Minnesota gets to keep"United" Not a fan of 3 united's in the same league. It works in England because of tradition, but not here. Minnesota FC sounds cleaner with a nickname of the "Loons". IMO
I do. And I care very little about DC United, positively or negatively. 'United' will continue to mean DC, while Minnesota are the Loons, and Atlanta doesn't have a nickname yet. I rarely use FC when discussing Dallas or Toronto, either.
