According to Bild, we may have already found our new CB. Fallou Diagne from Rennes is expected to complete his medical tomorrow, and the transfer fee is to be around 1.5 Mio. The 26 year old has Bundesliga experience, as he played for Freiburg from 2012-14. He also seems like a pretty decent aerial scoring threat from set pieces. Last season in Ligue 1 he scored 5 goals.

According to Kreiszeitung, Diagne is just the beginning of the new summer transfers. We're currently in discussions and are looking for an additional defender with leadership qualities. This has been a major area of need in recent years so I'm glad this topic is being addressed by Baumann.

I remember watching him a couple years ago, former captain of Ajax. He's older now but should still be solid and provide some veteran leadership and stability.

Max Kruse makes his return to Werder. Transfer fee is 6 Mio but reportedly may rise up to 9 Mio later with bonuses included. He'll receive the #10 kit. With this signing it appears likely that Skrippo will return to a 4-4-2 type lineup with Kruse and Pizarro as double strikers.

Max Kruse really started to occupy the thoughts of Frank Baumann for the first time at the end of June. It was actually during Baumann’s family holiday in Mallorca, when the departure of SVW striker Anthony Ujah was looking more and more likely. Baumann needed an alternative. “I contacted Max’s agent from Mallorca”, reports the sporting director. He admits that he really didn’t think they would be able to meet the transfer demands. “But I didn’t want to give up without even having tried.”

A month later, Kruse is sitting next to Baumann on the podium in the press conference room in the Weser-Stadion. After seven years away from the club, the 28-year-old is a Green-White once more – and both parties are extremely happy about it. “Max had other options as well, but we persevered and managed to convince him”, says Baumann. “After last year, which didn’t go very well for me, I want to enjoy playing football again. I will give everything to achieve that. I really don’t care what other people think of this transfer. I know that I can play better than I did last season, and now I want to prove that”, emphasises Kruse.

The signing of Lamine Sane has been finalized, with the 29 year old CB joining on a free transfer. He's also the older brother of Hannover's Salif Sane.

“We have been looking for a centre-back for a while now and wanted to react quickly to the departure of Alejandro Gálvez. In Lamine, we have signed a very interesting player. He is a very big defender with a lot of experience. He has the potential to further stabilise our defence”, says Baumann.

Our central defence is going through a total makeover next season. Out are Vestergaard, Djilo, Galvez and in with Diagne, Moisander, Sane. Caldirola also makes his return and looks set to have a key role. It'll be interesting to see who the starting pair will be. Caldirola had a pretty solid loan spell at Darmstadt so I think he's the most likely choice to feature regularly. With the other spot being between Moisander or Sane. But then again, it's pretty open to competition and whoever is in the best form. Veljkovic looks like the odd man out, although he might be an option for DM.

Bild is reporting that we're in advanced discussions with Ingolstadt's Robert Bauer. Final negotiations are expected to occur next Sunday or Monday after he returns from the Rio Olympics. Transfer fee is mentioned as being between 3-4 Mio. Bauer can play both fullback positions, and especially as we look for an alternative for TGS at the RB spot.

We've signed Thomas Delaney, Danish international and also captain of FC Copenhagen. He is set to join the team in January 2017. Nice move to further strengthen the midfield.

    http://www.werder.de/en/news/news/werder-bremen-news/20162017/thomas-delaney-17082016/

We are very pleased that Thomas has decided to move to Werder. He is a player with a lot of potential, who is the current captain of FC Copenhagen and will therefore bring a lot of leadership experience despite his young age. The transfer has been completed looking ahead to the new season. Because of the huge interest in Thomas, we decided to act now on a winter signing”, says Frank Baumann. Viktor Skripnik is looking forward to working with Delaney. “Thomas is a strong runner, who will give us a few more options through his flexibility. He is a player with a great mentality, who always puts everything in for the team”, says the head coach.

Jesus you have had a busy summer. Do you feel your stronger or weaker than last year? Vestergaard and Ujah are gonna be big losses no?

Probably somewhere in the middle tbh. Despite selling for good value, Ujah didn't necessary have a high scoring season. Kruse can easy take his place in terms of production. However we'll be without Pizarro for the beginning part of the campaign. So hopefully Thy and Johannsson can step up. The young Eggestein has also been a positive point this summer.

Vestergaard's departure on the other hand is a different story. He was our top defender. We also lost Djilobodji and Galvez so the CB pairings are completely new. A mix of veterans and younger guys were brought in but it'll take time for them to form chemistry. While our midfield looks improved with greater depth being added. It's actually a while since we've been able to spend during a transfer window like this, much thanks to the profits generated from sales.
