I really don't know what goes through Vadao's head, I just find it weird how he took so long to see the obvious. Some people even say that he's just a figurehead and that his assistant is the one who calls the shots.

I've seen some mention Italy's team in the past and that they've been successful because of bunkering. But I think you hit the nail on the head, they had a very good to elite defense, that allowed their back four, and a deep laying mid to stop opposing defenses. As a fan of the Azzuri it's kind of a slight to hear people say Italy relied on the bunker, when they've had some of the best individual defenders that have ever played the game.

I am Italian and I can tell you: our "catenaccio" was played way differently than repeatedly shooting balls over the side-lines the way Sweden did... :devilish:

The way he tried to make Luciana happen did give me pause. Who is the assistant? Is it that youngish looking dude with the mustache?

He's called Fabricio (actually, he's the coordinator for women's soccer). Can't tell, I didn't pay attention to who was close to Vadão.

No hatred, just never understood how a player that has never won anything is rated so highly.
She not one of those players who manage to some how make those around them better.

She's a very good player. But she's certainly been overrated through the years.

Goal serious had an article calling he "better than Neymar"

    For &$@% sake

This is the sixth Olympics with women soccer (first in 1996). The US has won 4 of them including Pia in '08 and '12. April Heinrichs won in'04.

Depends on if you're talking club, country, or both. Marta has done wonders in the club game regularly and won multiple titles there. She hasn't won anything with Brazil, but for a long time she was the main reason Brazil was able to place as highly as they did a major tournaments. In both of those cases (club and country) I would definitely say she's raised the level of those around her.

If all you're talking about is country, then what's your opinion on Messi?

Several years ago, you made extremely demeaning and derogatory comments about her that nothing to do with her as a player. So yes, hatred! I saw/see through that BS.

Don't even bother going back and forth about this, because, I'm not remotely interested.

@dark knight can you please work on giving is the option to put mods on ignore?! Pretty please?

Very disappointing to read some of these arrogant and disparaging comments, made by fans whose team wasn't even involved in the game but had been sent home by the Swedes a few days ago. To concede even the slightest amount of credibility to their goalkeeper's classless remarks is truly sad and foolish.

We all remember a certain Tim Howard being called a "hero" and "the World Cup's greatest goalie" by US media and fans after saving his bunkering team from complete dismemberment by a superior Belgian (or "foreign", as Abby Wambach would call them) team.

Handling defeat exposes people's true maturity and cultural state of development. It's a sign of utter ignorance, along with those notorious claims of exceptionality and preeminence over "foreign cowards", if one is not able to muster any civility and respect towards others.

People are "calling it out" because it's certainly amazing a team of this standard and quality has made it to the finals of the Olympics. This doesn't happen often, which is why all the discussion.

I have never endorsed Solo's comments in this thread, so I hope this comment wasn't directed at anything I've said, but if I may address something...

Yes, Howard made a record 15 saves in one match that day, and Belgium was the superior team. However, that match was not "bunkering" by any stretch of the imagination. Just go to the official stats - the USA had more possession and more completed passes than Belgium did. Even the shot ratio was "just" about 1:2.5, as opposed to the 1:5 that Sweden managed against Brazil or the USA with half of the possession. The matches are nothing similar.

This is just an observation. But considering, where she has played for a large portion of her club career, I don't think you'll find her saying too many negative things about Sweden. But classy response all the same.....

    Yeah. No legs were broken.

And the two times Italians used it in a WC, they lost in the Quarters (1998) and the first round(2002).

Mm. Argentina won an Olympic gold with him featured. This is the Olympics.

At the Senior level since his debut, the Barça won six La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, three Champions Leagues, six Supercopa de Espanas, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups.

He has also won four consecutive Ballon d’Ors and is only three goals away from becoming La Liga’s all-time top-scorer. Telmo Zarra is currently holding the record with 251 goals.

He hasn't won a WC, but he has won everything else.

    Sure...

The mere audacity to come here and put down a Swedish team that would have beaten the US in regulation, if it wasn't for an incorrectly disallowed goal, rivals Hope Solo's classless comments. If US football fans can't handle defeat on an international stage, they better stick with the NFL, NBA or MLB. Their perennial delusions of grandeur are becoming nauseating.

Brazil fans aren't yelling "Zika" on goal kicks. That's a gay slur. Awful to hear it in so many places these days.

      126 retweets122 likes

On a side but important note, since I heard it again this entire match...
What has the IOC, FIFA, the Brazilian Olympic committee said about this? Mexico was fined and threaten to be pulled from qualifiers when this happened in one match.
