Many would say that the USA was lucky. Schelin's goal was incorrectly called offside. The game could have been over before the shoot-out. Based on the final result, it's hard to knock Pia's tactics.
Oh, i don't think you've seen many of the matches the WNT played. Like the Shebelieves cup when dismantled the top ranked teams in the world with great soccer.
Look a the group results for Sweden and you will see Pia had little choice in her tactics against the US and she did not want to lose face in front of her old team. The team rallied around the simple game plan and hoped for the best. Hope Solo's words are a little strong but anytime a team wins a game like this it's a sad day for football.
Wait, did you miss Lloyd's goal called offside 1 minute before? US scored the game winning goal and it was called back, the play of game would never had been the same had that call rightfully stood.
I did watch that tournament and wasn't impressed. The whole tournament lacked any real intensity also.
don't get all butt hurt because we've won so many championships. (we led france in every category that match, btw. with 4 newbies to the team)
1) if there's one team that seems to have the US number; it's Sweden! They've the only team in the world that had a winning record vs us in the last 5 years, and they proved it once again! 2) there are better players in the US, it's just Ellis turned the USWNT into a good ole girls squad with little room for others to join. Morgan's gets hyped by regular forum members as the top forward in the world., but she's only scored two goal so far in the NWSL. There's 20 other payers in the league that's scored 2 goals or more. That should tell you, she's not the best! Yet the others never seem to get a chance...........
The rest of the world isn't ' catching up'....they have caught up....Most of the women on the top teams are born in and are raised in a 'soccer culture', maybe the reason so many US college coaches now scout foreign players more than ever. Doubtful the USA will win the U17 women's world cup later this year too....the days of global domination in the women's game may well be over.
Agreed, however USA heard this since 2006. The funny thing is soccer isn't even close to the largest sport for youth girls in america and the youth programs are pretty shit. There's still a long way to go and improve for the worlds most dominate soccer team. teams like France and Japan China make these tournaments very fun. I hope we don't see a Sweden vs. Canada boxing match in the coming days.
I can't say I know much about the US domestic set up. I think Morgan is a useful option at least in a squad. Out of interest is there anyone that is in contention or good enough to take over from Solo?
we've won in EVERY house. sad day for soccer to see Sweden and Canada play the way they did and advance. i think both teams had 1 shot on goal. it's more like rugby out there. But really, faults on US and France, we had our chances.
As a CDN I actually respect the US team. I usually enjoy watching them play. Only reason that I am happy they lost is that it may make an easier path for my girls to get to the podium. There are so many wonderful things to learn from sport. Unfortunately Ms. Solo has missed out on one of the most important ones, ie, respect your opponent especially after they have just taken you out. Congratulations Sweden. I am not a huge Pia fan, but I will still congratulate her and her team.
I don't think three 1 goal wins qualifies as 'dismantling' the top ranked teams...The USA was fortunate to beat England 1-0 on a very late goal by Crystal Dunn.....as has been pointed out that 'tournament' was played in the USA and not in a hostile environment...The days of the USA dominating the women's game are a thing of the past....
