87' 4-0 Thomis turns-and-drives through box top mid-right, to spot. Shoots rising along centerline, Sepúlveda blocks it straight up and catches.

89' 4-0 Colombia subs in (3 of 3) #8 Mildrey Pineda Echeverri for #10 Leicy Santos Herrera.

    FT 4-0.

Boring second half but what can you do against a team that won't attack even when down 0-4...

Saturday will see a proper game. Let's see if France can finally score goals when it matters or stil have the same disease carried on for nearly 10 years now.

I would say it all depends if France finally has a strong enough defender in Mbock that can stop Alex Morgan, because usually she has a field day vs Georges/Renard. If Americans can stop her(she only got 2 NWSL/league goals) then the rest of the world got to get off their high horse and/can figure out how to stop her too

Disease??? Never heard that one before.

Alex is accompanied by a slew of other attackers now, so her NWSL play is of little consequence now, IMO
On the other hand, she always seems to score against France! ;)

Yes we are IN! Great first game for France, we did what was necessary to win in the first half and not waste too much energy in the second....The girls are on a mission so every game will be different in terms of application/tactics etc....starting from the next one against the best team in the world. Our goal is clear, France MUST leave this Olympics with a medal .

A wasteful France has been defeated by a USA not great but showing why they are archi favourite to win the competition. It was a nice game of football, an excellent pubblicity for her movement worldwide with both team lacking a little bit of genius, mainly due to too much respect for each other, but tactically they really showed why female football has improved so miuch this last 5 years.
Hope Solo was the best player fo the game, it's really shameful how the Brazilian are treating her....I hope Marta and Co. tell the public to be more respectful toward a living legend, the best female goalie of all time, she deserves that respect.
USA didn't had a great game, dominated in the first half by France but as all TOP teams do, they know how to suffer without being in danger and most of all to take even half a chance.....The Americans understood France's right flank was our weakesr point and they focus their attack in that area....after the third they scored because of a bad initial positionning for Houara and a blatant marking mistake from Henry.
France had a good game in the first half but an isolated and wwasteful Delie and Abily and Cadamuro playing average game couldn't allow us to win it against the archi-favourite of the competition.
Anyway this was just a group stage game so there is nothign to worry about.

21' 0-0 Yellow card on #6 Liana Salazar.
26' 0-0 Yellow card on #17 Hannah Wilkinson.

31' 0-1 Wilkinson(?) chases down wide left to 5m, ground cross to spot. #9 Amber Hearn stops ball, fakes a quick shot right, resets feet, shoots left into 1/4 left back low, past 1 slide-try, with Sepúlveda topping the wrong way and not close with her feet.

    HT 0-1.

46' 0-1 Hearn receives facing away at 24m center, spins 270 ccw, drifts to 23m arc left. Spins 180 cw into right roundhouse shot swerving to center high. Sepúlveda backpedals, tips ball up onto crossbar, falls down onto back, pops back up and catches the bounce.

47' 0-1 Wilkinson runs up wide right to arc top with LB #9 Velásquez alongside. LCB #13 Clavijo slide-tackles them both, Wilkinson rolls properly but Velásquez twists down onto left hand partially extended, stays down yelping and holding left clavicle. Trainers, she walks into touch unaided but still holding shoulder.

52' 0-1 #13 Clavijo fouled at own 22m arc left. Velásquez is on the field again, so she resumed.

57' 0-1 New Zealand subs in (1 of 3) #14 Katie Bowen for #10 Sarah Gregorius.

60' 0-1 Colombia fk from ~box top wide right, off crossbar 1/3 right as Nayler jumped and fell. Andrade stands over ball at 24m left touch, Z-drag befuddles Wilkinson, Andrade ghosts up left touch -- flicks past Percival, chases to endline wide left. 1-v-1 face-off -- dragleft-and-flick rounds her endline  like a foosball pull shot. Ball fully over? Anyways, harmless ground cross to Nayler at 3m left post.

62' 0-1 New Zealand subs in (1 of 3) #13 Rosie White for #17 Hannah Wilkinson.
73' 0-1 Colombia subs in (1 of 3) #15 Tatiana Ariza Díaz for #16 Lady Andrade Rodríguez.

79' 0-1 Colombia subs in (2 of 3) #7 Ingrid Vidal Isaza for #4 Diana Ospina García. Taborda must pull these subs off flashcards.

79' 0-1 LB #9 Velásquez shoots long from ~27m mid-left, sails just onto back roof as Nayler backpedaled.

87' 0-1 Colombia overhit a longball toward box top mid-right, T.Ariza chases way behind Erceg shielding her off through box top. Ariza puts hand on Erceg's back, Erceg grabs her hand and gives it a mild jiu jitsu twist as they run just into box top -- Ariza craftily takes a seat. Colombia promptly call for a foul inside the box -- ref gives it just outside, but DOGSO, red card on Erceg!

89' 0-1 Colombia subs in (3 of 3) #7 Nicole Regnier for #6 Liana Salazar.
90' 0-1 New Zealand subs in (3 of 3) #15 Meikayla Moore for #13 Rosie White.

90' 0-1 Colombia fk at arc top right, hard shot across wall inswings to 1/3 left, Nayler dives and blocks it wide left with the left hand high. +3'.

FT 0-1. Colombia just didn't have the gas to finish off any long attacking runs.

Wow! New Zealand chose to travel to Rio for the opening ceremonies and still pulled out the win:

EDIT: Grant Wahl was misinformed. Apparently they only dressed up.

The key to stopping Morgan is making sure she doesn't get service, which the USWNT does a good job of on it's own. That is her biggest problem in NWSL play as well. Most balls to Morgan are hopeful long balls (ground or over the top) that they expect her to beat a defender to and turn nothing into a goal or assist.

The same turned out to be true Saturday vs France. Heath and Lloyd did not provide a true dangerous pass to Morgan. At least Dunn had one.

this time around, I thought France did a pretty good darn job of defending Morgan, but keeping their fb's more grounded to help out on defense and as a result were able to get quite a few off sides calls and some nice tackles on Morgan.
Their problem besided that their weakest players(Houra & Diani) were both stationed on our left, they needed to score goals, but their usual lone striker, Le Sommer, was out due to a light injury, and they don't want to start anymore what's arguably the fastest player in the world, Thomis. When she finally did come, not only did the US have the lead, but immediately subbed Dunn for a defender

New Zealand appealed the red card on Erceg, and FIFA overturned the card. She'll be able to play against France:

Morgan didn't score that is true. France did a decent job defending her. The reality is that maybe two passes should have had any decent chance for Morgan to do anything dangerous with. Of course Morgan usually makes something of one of those decent passes. Lloyd had a terrible night passing, sending most of her passes or even first touches right to French players. The offsides on Morgan were Heath holding the ball way too long. Good for France, but nothing magical.

As for the Dunn swap it actually weakened the USA defense. O'Hara looked good because Dunn spent her time doing half of the defending on O'Hara's side of the field. When Krieger came in, O'Hara did not return the favor. I was not happy with Krieger's play, but O'Hara did her no favors.

03' 0-0 Hassett spins cw at 27m center, Houara hip-checks her down. Hassett stays down with hip/back pain.

05' 0-0 New Zealand fk at 27m center ... Percival takes a seat in the arc, gets up. NZL fk, deflects wide left.

06' 0-0 NZL left ck, high to 6m 8-right. Henry jumps and distracts Hearn, ball bounces off Hearn, wide right.

16' 0-0 France probe up left touch, backpass to midfield and go up the right. New Zealand are defending across circle back, high chasing but no high pressure.

18' 0-0 Karchaoui(?) chases to midfield wide left, clears ball upfield -- directly into Bowen's sternum. Woof -- Bowen kneels down.

20' 0-0 Stoppage, all others get water. Bowen stands half-way up, sags down again.

21' 0-0 Bowen stands in far touch, getting her drink. Resume with 10, Bowen promptly rejoins. France switch right, aimless longball to Nayler at box top center.

23' 0-0 Karchaoui darts past Bowen from midfield circle left to box top mid-left -- Bowen can't keep up. Last touch eludes Karchaoui to 15m mid-left, Percival comes across and collects and Karchaoui slides late into Percival's calves. Percival tumbles down, foul on Karchaoui.

25' 0-0 Thomis turns down wide right to 13m, cross floats to spot, Percival ducks under somebody's flying side-kick and sneaks her foot in to clear away.

32' 0-0 Karchaoui floats a shross from 12m wide left to 1m left post, Nayler catches high. Lot of offense from Karchaoui!

    35' 0-0 France subs in (1 of 3) #9 Eugénie Le Sommer for #18 Marie-Laure Delie.

37' 0-0 Wilkinson turns past Karchaoui slipping down at 12m 6-right, shoots from 9m 6-right, Bouhaddi smothers.
