Dude Portugal had a good tactical plan, and I will give them credit for the win and the Euro 2016 title, but I honestly think if Croatia actually played the same way they did against Spain and Turkey, the tactical plan wouldn't have worked.

The tactics that Fernando Santos asked his team to carry out stopped Croatia from playing at their best.

The "Croatia was tired" excuse is complete BS... They were playing that game on 3 days rest and Portugal on just 2 days rest! So if there was any advantage to be had in terms of recovery time it was all theirs. Croatia was simply out coached in that game. Portugal implemented the perfect tactical plan to shut them down and frustrate them... period. They didn't play like they did against Spain because they couldn't/were not allowed to, not because they chose not to.

We can sit here and go over Hypotheticals day and night for the next 4 years and it will mean nothing. The fact is at the end of 51 matches 1 team brought home the Trophy: PORTUGAL by definition that makes them the best team at this tournament whether you like it or not, whether you agree with it or not, really doesn't matter. The tournament is held to determine the best team in Europe. You play the matches that are put in front of you and at the end of 1 month a winner is declared, everything else is just nonsense chatter to kill time until the world cup comes around...

    Good day

    OK

You do realize there is a reason why the most common form of a competition in this sport is the season as contrary to the tournament?

Tournaments are just too prone to once in a life time tossups. How often do you see a Leicester happening in the big leages with big, even competition? How often has a Denmark, Greece, Portugal happened now? You rarely ever see the best team of anything in a tourney. Given that Portugal played only filler teams in addition to the most lopsided tourney table ever, this makes Portugal even a worse team compared to Denmark and Greece. They played the same crap but at least did they play the world beaters of their time. That is why you exactly cant say Portugal was the best team. You could if Portugal had won a Euro league. But with 4 draws against the teams you did indeed face it is hardly believable you had ended up first if you had also played the bracket of death side.

(*) How's that saying go again? "Opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one"

Look, its pretty simple... Currently there is only 1 way to determine the best team in Europe it is a Tournament which is held every 4 years. They call it the European Championship. It is not a season or a league and it really does not matter if this is generally the best way to determine the best team or not. A tournament is what we have and have had for many many decades now and it remains the only concrete, measurable and universally recognized way to determine the current best. There isn't a trophy for the "prettiest football", there isn't a trophy for the "team that should have won if not for a bunch of injuries" etc... The trophy is for the WINNER and there can only be 1 Champion, i'll let you look up the definition of a champion...

In my opinion (*see above) the BEST team is the team that does all that is necessary to get to the final and win the trophy. Portugal was that team in 2016 just like Spain in '12 - 08', Greece in 2004 and all other winners before them. The fact is that Portugal played the teams that appeared before them and did what they needed to do to bring the trophy home and the other 23 teams were not good enough to do the same. Portugal didn't make the knockout phase brackets the way they were, the combined results of the 24 teams did that.

I would be willing to bet a heck of a lot of money that If it were Germany who ended up on that side of the bracket and made the same run Portugal did to the Championship we wouldn't be having this back and forth... You lost, deal with it. You are still World Champions (at least for another 2 years) enjoy that instead.

Let me throw some logic at you. If Leicester came in 3rd in 2012, than 2nd in 2013, than 4th in 2014 and than 3rd again in 2015, would you consider 2016 a fluke? Meaning Portugal has been to the semis 5 out of the last 7 Euros. Unlike Denmark or Greece. Also Portugal continues to win or go far in all the recent youth tournaments. Can Denmark or Greece make this claim? League format is the most accurate of course, but to minimize Portugal with false equivalency, well that's just out of spite rather than perspective.

This trophy has been in the Iberian Peninsula since 2008 and to be honest i don't think it's ever leaving.

Southern Europe has dominated since 2004.

Not to mention just yesterday our U19 team beat them. We are conditioning the young Portuguese to be accustomed to beating the Germans.

but Portugal goes to semi's of euro almost every time, and produces world class players...
its not like PT came out of nowhere and won and people who actually follow our team should have known we had a good team most of us said before the tournament it was our best squad since 2004 but everyone assumes its just CR7.

Denmark and Greece have less pedigree in football

it was only a matter of time we will win.- it was the only thing missing. Individual accolades we have done, european trophies with clubs we have done, only thing missing was a major title with the national team.

and you better get used to it.

and Id rather win this way then win 7-1 against Brazil , showing no respect to the opponent like Germany did. Its better to make them suffer and make people feel like they actually had a chance, that way the trolling and victory is sweeter.

Comparing Portugal to those teams is a joke.

We've been in 4 of the last 5 Euro semi finals.

Replace Iceland with Croatia and I think this list is spot on, if we purely want to judge teams by how strong they were at Euro 2016.

Croatia did nothing much until Spain match. Are you serious?

I didn't see anything special in this tournament to claim they would have shredded us apart from that match against Spain. They did ******** all against us if it wasn't for Vida. A center back, mind you that tried to be the outnumbering factor in the goal area. Is that the mighty offensive plan they reserved for us?

Spain has the quality but much like France it seemed not dynamic enough in its approach. I could very well see Portugal overcoming them as their inverted wingers would fall perfectly into a narrow defensive formation. Still favorites...but how do you know?
They lost to Croatia who bunkered as much as we did with the only difference of them having a more fluid offensive transition.

Italy would probably ended up in a goalless draw and this is a 50/50. I could very well see it going to a penalties or being decided by a fk/corner. Not that Italy would sit back more than usual, but you can't honestly tell me that they have offensive players capable of cutting through a tight defense more than France or even bloody Croatia. Italy's whole gameplan is about exploiting open spaces after all.

Germany could very well beat us but then again they seemed the team most capable of choking the opposition and create a significant amount of goalscoring opportunities in this tournament. They were the strongest candidates to take this but Low should of done better with his roster.
However if France managed with a stint of luck, maybe we could too. How do you know?
Actually, why isn't even this used as the same argument against France in the first place?

Having said this, I don't believe in luck and neither that any of these teams that progressed to be fortunate. I don't even remember anyone questioning them in this regard because they were simply better as they have to capitalize the opponent's mistakes. If they made mistakes like Vida being a poor finisher, Boateng with his occasional brain farts and Pellè being over confident then maybe, just maybe that's part of the team's quality as a whole. Heck even Low's choice in the final roster and the lack of a proper 9 sub falls into it.

There's a lot of variables to consider but focusing your "ifs" into one single team is proof that there's too much bitterness to assume the failures of your own teams. One thing is acknowledging that some teams are stronger than others on paper. Another is using that argument to convince everyone that Portugal got "lucky". ********, under that reasoning almost all the winners got lucky somehow.

They know nothing but revolving around the ifs and ifs. If we didn't had C. Ronaldo missing sitters and that penalty we would be topping the group and ending up in the same bracket. We would of been facing Belgium ffs...

Not even a single mention on the clear penalty WITHIN THE 90 MINS in every single knockout round (except the final) not awarded to our advantage. Are those ifs taken into account when you people make a convenient analysis too?

Had those 2 elements been in our favor we would of reached the final through the same bracket we ended up in anyway. Portugal was far more dominant than you're all making it seem. If the ifs don't rightfully matter at the end of the day for the portuguese team then remember to include that same reasoning on the others too. They just weren't good enough.

Even in Euro 2008 we made it to the quarters and lost to Germany. We have always made it out of group stage. Not ever power house country can say that.

Italy Germany and France have something else in common

    They all lost

    Portugal CAMPEAO hahahahaha

You don't think Portugal missed any players? Fabio coentrao who was our first choice left back for past years injured , Bernardo silva (arguably our best prospect) was also injured - and the best European player of all time Ronaldo injured in the final

Most Portuguese were confident in their team going in it was the international press understating them who have no knowledge of the players outside Ronaldo or the prospects we have coming up

James DW, Marco Delvecchio and Blue and white have all gone MIA. James I can give a pass, he seemed to be maybe 16-18 years old. Marco, well let's just say he makes Forrest Gump seem like Stephen Hawking. I can't quit put my finger on it, but I always took blue and white as a guy that has 3 pet snakes and a few lizards, lives in a basement where it will eventually be discovered there are several dead cats and a Ouija board.
