In commemoration of Palermo's increasingly great jerseys over the last few years, I thought I'd create a thread to show all its variations. And I'll be honest, I'm hoping it will direct some more palermo fans to this board. Sadly, in a lot of google searching I can't find anything that shows what they all looked like through their whole history (This guy has managed to get a hold of most of them dating back to the 60s). There is a book in Italian on the subject I may try to get a hold of and scan, but I'm not paying for it. In general their jerseys have been pretty consistently pink, white, and black for their three variations. Other than that, everything is basically fair game in terms of stripes, sashes, hoops, collars, etc.

That said, here's a reverse history of the jersey, as far back as google images can take me. A note from the start, Palermo has had an odd history of jersey sponsors randomly changing in the middle of the season lately. Some of these probably have versions with (different) sponsors. I've just picked ones that have good photos.

    The 2010's

Beginning with this year's (2015-16) gorgeous kits
    [IMG]
Off the bat, notice the retro badge on the third kit, as well as the fact that its green (I believe also a throwback look, but I'm not positive.) Strips make an appearance on the away, as well as the hint of a sash through the coloring. Both features appear in various iterations of the kit. The home has a very subtle eagle on it. But otherwise, simple and clean.

    2014-15
    [IMG]
Again, nice simple first kit. Collar this time, which comes and goes on them. The original pink jersey hand a black banded collar (ie like what the away one has) as far as I can discern, so this one gets close there. The away kit is close to the original away kits as well, with a horizontal black and pink stripe. Though originally it was much lower. The third kit here is a strange slate gray with the embossed eagle. Not a huge fan of it.

    2012-13
    [IMG]
A strange checkerboard pattern on the Home kit, a fat pink bar on the third kit. Neither particularly good. Fitting jersey's for our season shamefully (and yet eventually victoriously) spent in Serie B. The away kit though, with the black and pink sash, is probably my favorite in recent times. (the horizontal bar one above is right up there with it).

    2011-12
    [IMG]
Only one jersey here. Imagine it in White with Pink accents and Black with Pink accents, and you know what the other two looked like. Dull Dull Dull. Even more fitting for the worst season in recent times, which saw Palermo relegated to Serie B.

    2010-11
    [IMG] [IMG]
Again, imagine White with Pink and Black with Pink for the other two. More dull jerseys. The way the stripe came around the back, especially when the numbers were applied always looked really bizarre to me. They definitely didn't do much to inspire.

Palermo's jersey's when I was first convinced to start watching soccer. The odd lopsided curved stripes of the away kit were especially odd. I definitely liked the black one best, but none of them were great.

    2008-09
These were simpler times. The jerseys are the same as the ones above.

    2007-08
    [IMG]
As with many other years, the second and third kits are the same patter, except White/Pink Black/Pink instead. uninspired doesn't even begin to describe these jerseys. And yet, they were an infinite improvement upon..

    2006-07

With a third black kit the inverse of the home. Tiger stripes is all I can think. Well....that and ugly. Notice the low down bar on the away kit though, getting closer to the original secondary kits, but with the modern Eagle emblem

    2005-06
    [IMG][IMG] [IMG]

I can't get a photo of the third kit not bleached to shit, but that sleeve is pink. with gold accents where the home kit has black. Not a good look. Classic look on the away kit though.

The secondary kit is the same as the year above. Once again, black third kit the inverse of the primary.Palermo's last glorious return to Serie A, they did it in much uglier jerseys than in 2014-15. Just dull really. Sometimes I think jerseys are too complicated and they should be simplified. Palermo tried that I suppose, but did it badly. The black side bars is not a great look. The white kit with the horizontal bar is by far the best out of this period's jerseys

    2003-04
    [IMG]
Keeping the Pink and Black Primary and Tertiary kits for the 2004/05 season, the only unique jersey for Palermo's last Serie B promotion season is the away kit, and it is uninspiring. The change to the classic look was a good decision for the return to the big leagues.

    2002-03
    [IMG] [IMG]

You'll notice its getting harder and harder to find a decent shot of these jerseys. Perhaps its because they were in Serie B and not very popular at the time, or as I choose to believe, perhaps its because these jerseys are just giant turds in the history of a glorious club. They do however, bear the historical legacy of being the first jerseys worn in the Zamparini era, who b0ught the club in the summer of 2002

    2001-02
    upload_2015-8-17_1-16-12.png [IMG]

Third kit, once again, just an inverted Black/Pink version of the first kit. This was Palermo's first season back in Serie B after some time in Serie C1. Not all that impressive

    2000-01
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Truly dark days as we head back to the terrible 90s a decade where no team seems to have escaped the poor fashion choices of the decade. The sleeves on the third kit which seem to be sown on from an entirely different kit was a particularly bad choice. Perhaps fitting Jersey's for a team making its way out of the dark dank basement of Serie C1

Thats it for tonight. I'll save the 80s and 90s for another time.

This is great- previously, I've only seen whatever historical jerseys they have on classicfootballshirts.uk (I think). Some of these are very ugly, but when done right (like this year), Palermo has some of the best kits in all of soccer.

Once they got away from funky accents on the home kit, it got much better. I'm biased towards collared shirts, but last years home is the best Pink kit in recent history, this years isn't much worse. The last three away kits have all killed it. If I had money, I'd buy all three in a heartbeat. The first couple of years I paid attention I preferred the black ones, mostly because they were all the same uninspiring designs, and they looked slightly better in black. Puma and now Joma have really gotten things back on track.

Definitely like the collared shirts better, and the black with the pink strip across is one I'm looking for at the right price. The checkerboard one from 2012 is the only one I own, so I'm partial to that one as well.

I know that they were likely somewhat a victim to then-current fashion trends, but holy hell are some of those Lotto ones bad.

Palermo closed out the 90's still in C1. And, for the last time ever wore Pink and Black stripes. Notice also the old badge. It was the last year for that as well. My guess is, no third kit back in these days, Palermo weren't exactly rolling in the money. but I have no way to know for sure. I'm not a fan of the black strieps, but it has its roots in Palermo's history

    1998-99
    [IMG] [IMG]

A nearly successful campaign saw Palermo finish 2nd in their part of C1, only to lose in the promotion playoffs. The thin stipes on these jerseys look very 90s. But all in all, could have been a lot worse

    1997-98

Things get easy here, jerseys were the same as above. In a dismal season, Palermo were due to be relegated to C2, only to be saved as a result of a vacancy (I'm assuming finance related) and got to stay up in C1.

    1996-97
Imagine a time when you used a jersey not for one year, not for two years, but for three whole years before attempting another cash grab. No wonder soccer had financial problems

    1995-96
    [IMG]

Remember when I said those other kits could have been much worse given it was the 90s? Here's the proof. Also for some reason they had a plain and striped pink jersey this year.

    Those last three o_O

I wouldn't mind a black and pink striped option, if done correctly, but none of these are it...

Some small corrections, I posted the wrong badge for the late 90s, its actually this one:
[IMG] (it says u.s. citta di palermo in white around the bottom)

That was used from 1994-1999. Its the same Eagle used in a much earlier badge, and in the city's coat of arms.

The one I posted above was used in the early 1991-1994.

I think those dates are right. I can't find great info one way or the other

Which leads me to believe that last kit in the previous post is newer than the other two I put in that year. Its odd that they are using two different crests if its not. I suppose its possible the changed halfway through the season and came out with a new jersey, but then to only use it half a seaon would be strange.

Everything I can find though seems to indicate that they are all correct. Really hoping I can get a hold of that book so I can figure out why this is the case. It gets even wierder in the early 90s with some years having 3 or 4 different pink jerseys. I can't figure it out.

I might skip down to the 80s until I can find more info

Some day I'll get back to this in a serious way hopefully, but for now, Happy 115th birthday to Palermo, known at their founding as the Anglo Panormitan Athletic and Football Club, Panormitan being (apparently) a more poetic demonym for Palermo, from its older Greek name of Panormus. Founded by Ignazio Majo Pagano and (likely) Joseph Whitaker, an englishman he worked with, and who would eventually suggest the rosanero colors.

It would be another 7 years till they became Palermo Foot-Ball Club, and changed to the pink and black they have (nearly) continuously worn ever since.

In those early days, it was red and blue

I've been trying, unsuccessfully so far, to find any evidence of a jersey that used the throwback logo on this year's green third kit. Or, even just the logo itself in the traditional Palermo colors. Looking at the Alessio Candiloro site (which is great), it appears that we didn't have the logo on the kit until the mid-80's, and by that time it had apparently changed. Only thing is, a season appears to be missing, so maybe the old logo was on front then? Just curious as to the inspiration for the thirds...

Looks like I needed to go to 1979-80 to find an example of it, and an interesting example at that.

I know it's ugly, I mean, I doubt many people would argue it's not- but I somehow think it's great. Not just the logo, but the whole damn thing, somehow, looks great to me.

Anyway, I still don't get why they brought back this logo for a green kit, but I guess that's what third jerseys are for- looking forward to seeing what Joma does for the upcoming season. Unless they renewed, pretty sure it will be their last as our kit maker. They've been pretty solid, so I wouldn't mind them staying on a little longer.

ETA- just realized that the team logo is in the top left corner on the Alessio site for each year, including the years in the 80's that didn't display the logo on the jersey. I've reached my quota of derp for the day.

Thought this was interesting- on Wikipedia, the logo that was used for this year's third jersey has a green diamond around it, perhaps the inspiration for the color of the jersey.

Taken from twitter. Could this be the new jersey for Palermo? It's not been announced anywhere official, but thats an awful official looking mockup.

Its looks nice, but not anything special. One thing to note is that the new main sponsor is a Chinese company. There have been a lot of rumors swirling that Zamparini has been conducting meetings with an anonymous group of Chinese investors about buying the club.

The first two characters of the sponsor, if my terrible writing skills got the right characters on google translate, mean 'bread' whether or not that is how it is being used in that name or not, I don't know. I can't even make out the last two well enough to attempt them, and if I try searching Google, I don't get any results that seem to be relevant

Saw that on Reddit today, and yeah, not overly impressed. The sponsor box seems excessively wide in relation to the white chest stripe, and there's too much white for a team known as the 'pink and black'. Obviously the white shorts and socks can be swapped out, but this particular look isn't that great, imo. Wouldn't mind the chest stripes with a proportionate sponsor box, or with sponsor lettering embedded, but it just seems a little haphazard as it stands.

I think white shorts have been pretty common with the pink jersey over the years, but I don't like the look at all. I much prefer black shorts.

I also agree about the sponsor, maybe it looks better with a higher quality look, but it just looks weird being so much wider than the white stripe across the rest of the chest.

Its also worth noting that this appears to be the first home kit with a stripe on it for at least 20 years or so. The Second kit has had it off and on for years, but the first has always had a plain front, or further back, vertical stripes.

Primary is fine. Second looks nice. Not crazy about the black and gold combo for the third.

I like the black and gold, but would prefer the primary logo displayed rather than the alt. It was nice as a one year thing, but it's not as a good looking as the primary and the novelty's no longer there. The primary looks good enough, I guess, I'd like to see the full kit before judging it though. The white is downgrade from the pinstripes we used this past year to me- it looks really really basic by comparison. Of course, maybe there's some more going on that these teasers hide well, so I guess I'll wait until at least Thursday before praising/trashing any of the looks.

I like the second still. It's definitely understated, but I liked the horizontal stripe jersey two years ago, and I like this variation.

The full kits, as presented today. Personally, I like the gold numbers on the primary, and the eagle on the number on the back of the jersey is a nice touch. Don't like the back sponsor back, but I guess it's inevitable.

The home is probably a 3.5 out of 5 for me. The pink looks a little paler than normal, but could just be lighting. I liked the idea of the chest stripe in the fake mock ups (even if the execution was less than great), but it's a great look and the fact that it hasn't changed much isn't too much of a negative. I don't particularly like the neck/shoulder striping on the primary, but it's too intricate to affect the overall look.

The secondary is just 1 out of 5 for me- there's nothing attractive about a monochrome white kit for me, so even with the interesting small pink/gold/black stripe on the crest, there's nothing about this kit that will stand out for me when watching the team and identify the team. I'd love to see the team go with pink shorts and/or socks for the secondary one year if they're going to continue with white as the primary color, which they'll probably do.

The third looks great to me, a solid 4 out of 5, hampered only by the use of the old logo for the second year in row. It's not a very good looking logo to me, but I like the colors and think it's a good example of what a third kit should be (visually different from the first two, non-traditional colors/design, etc.).

All in all I guess it averages out for me, either way, glad to finally get a look at the kits and look forward to seeing the team in them to start the season.

Another anniversary, February 27th marks 110 years since Palermo adopted their famous pink and blank (and also changed from the "Anglo Palermitan Athletic and Football Club" to the much catchier Palermo Foot-Ball Club, or Palermo FBC.

With the exception of a brief 5 year period yellow and red due to fascist intervention, followed by a year of light blue, Palermo has worn pink and blank ever since.
